Police arrest farmer for alleged murder of business partner

Enugu, Aug. 12, 2019 (NAN) The Police in Enugu State has arrested one Sampson Nwaobasi, an Enugu-based farmer, for allegedly killing his business partner, Mr Friday Ani, over payment of proceed made in farming business.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Monday in Enugu that the incident happened on July 31 in Agbani community; while the suspect was arrested on Aug. 7 by police operatives.

Amaraizu said that the deceased and one Paul Eze were all partners in the farming of cucumber as the deceased and Eze had raised money to the suspect, who does the farming, sells same and shares profits.

“It was gathered that his victim, Ani, a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology and his business associate had met his untimely dead when he had demanded from the suspect payment of his share of the proceed.

“It was gathered they were to share N6 million as the business thrived for four months; however, the suspect allegedly started avoiding his partners which made them believe that he may have craftily reinvested the proceed without them knowing.

“The deceased traced the suspect to the farm to find out what has been happening; and in the farm, misunderstanding arose between them which allegedly resulted in the killing of Ani by the suspect and burying him inside the bush.

“The deceased was said to have been reported missing by relations who could not immediately find out what happened.

“Following suspicious ways the story appeared, Commissioner of Police, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, directed for investigation in which the suspect was nabbed by police operatives in partnership with neighborhood watch group members from the community where he was hiding,’’ he said.

The police spokesman said that the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation in relation to how he allegedly killed his victim and quickly buried him inside the bush.

Amaraizu noted that the suspect had however maintained in his confessionary statement that the money in question is not to the tune of N6 million but N300,000.

He said that the suspect also maintained that he never wanted to kill the deceased and that the deceased wanted to kill him over the money but he had to struggle-out the knife from him and stabbed him to death. (NAN)

Damaturu, Nov. 15, 2018 (NAN) The Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative (PCNI) says it is partnering key institutions to promote peace and restore normalcy in the region.
Alhaji Tijjani Tumsah, PCNI Vice Chairman, said this on Thursday in Damaturu at a Peace Building and Transitional Justice Workshop, organised for lower court judges, traditional rulers and religious leaders in Yobe.
He said that the committee would use the collaboration to rebuild social cohesion and ensure equity and justice to forestall lingering grievances from recycling conflicts.
Tumsah, who was represented by Malam Musa Damagum, PCNI Coordinator in the state, said the objective of the training was to strengthen peace building processes to enhance resilience and social cohesion to promote justice and reconciliation.
He said the partnership would “develop tools to promote the culture of peace building through formal and informal arbitration mechanisms’’.
“In addition, PCNI and its partners are working to develop a transitional justice framework to form dialogue for peace and reconciliation given the ongoing return and resettlement of displaced persons with grievances that need to be addressed,” he said.
The vice chairman said PCNI would continue to advocate for upholding the rule of law and support dialogue, mediation and reconciliation.
Tumsah urged traditional and opinion leaders to pay serious attention to the entry and exit of strangers in their communities and provide early warning for early response to all threats in their localities.
He advised the participants to make good use of knowledge acquired to enhance peace building, dispute resolution and justice.
Justice Garba Nabaruma, the state Chief Judge, described the training as timely, saying it will enhance rule of law to promote peace building in the communities.
He assured of the commitment of the judiciary to more partnerships with PCNI, government organisations and non-governmental organisations in upholding rule of law and promoting justice.
Alhaji Shehu Hashimi Ibn El-kanemi, the Emir of Damaturu, commended PCNI for the continuos intervention in providing humanitarian needs to displaced persons and capacity building to promote peace and reconciliation in the state.
The traditional ruler assured that the knowledge and skills acquired would be effectively used to promote the process of peace and reconciliation in resettlement of the communities. (NAN)

Abuja, May 4, 2017 (NAN) Mr Fulvio Rustico, Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, says his country is ready to partner with Nigeria to combat the menace of human traffic.

Rustico disclosed this when he visited the Director-General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mr Julie Okah-Donli, in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies in Italy, Hon. Laura Bodrini, will soon visit Nigeria to get first-hand information to address the problem.

The envoy said that the Speaker would visit Benin City, Edo, reported to have the highest number of human traffickers in the country.

Rustico said that he was in the office to intimate her of the planned visit of the lawmaker with a view to making an informed decision on how to partner with NAPTIP to combat the menace of trafficking.

“It is necessary to share experience with NAPTIP on human trafficking management and have an overview of the phenomenon as well as nature of human trafficking from the state.

“The Italian legislator will be in Nigeria to have a direct knowledge of the phenomenon in order to be proactive in response to the problem,” he said.

The envoy assured of his country’s support to NAPTIP, saying that the fight against human trafficking is a technical process that requires support and assistance of all stakeholders.

Respodning, Okah-Donli explained that for the fight of human trafficking to be won, international partners and stakeholders like Italy must key in into collaboration with Nigeria to record success.

She called for the collaboration of Italian government in the fight against human trafficking in the country.

According to her, human trafficking is an evolving phenomenon that requires the active collaboration of all partners through accelerated justice delivery system and surveillance.

The NAPTIP boss said that aggressive massive sensitisation of Nigerians, especially those in the endemic communities on the danger of human trafficking have commenced.

She stated that her concern was also on rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking and the need to ensure accelerated justice for human traffickers.

The director-general thanked the Italian Government for the assistance rendered to the agency in past and solicited for more support in the area of capacity building.

She also solicited for assistance in the areas of technical and logistic support as well as empowerment of rescued victims of human trafficking. (NAN)

Abuja, March 1, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of Education says it is committed to partnering with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) on providing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, made the pledge in a goodwill message at a Stakeholders Meeting on Skills Initiative for Africa on Wednesday in Abuja.

The two-day event is organised by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

Represented by Mrs  Khadijat Liman, the Project Coordinator, NEPAD and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the ministry, Adamu said that the ministry would identify with programmes aimed at empowering the youths.

“For us in education, we are part of every intervention and activity that will lead in getting our young ones out of the streets and make them productive.

“The relationship between Federal Ministry of Education and NEPAD has been a very long standing one and this time around, we will consolidate on it.

“In the spirit of Vision 3030 which is – leaving no one behind – with education having goal 4, the relationship with NEPAD is going to be a robust one.

“With education for the young ones, nothing much will be achieved,’’ she said.

According to her, there is need for more interventions and activities towards inclusive education and better learning outcome for the citizens especially the young ones.

She said that the ministry was ready to commit to whatever activity NEPAD wanted to partner with it.

Liman added that the challenges in the North East region would not have risen if the young ones there had something doing.

Earlier, Mrs Gloria Akobundu, the National Coordinator, NEPAD Nigeria, said the agency would empower youths with various skills to make them self-reliant.

She said that NEPAD would begin the implementation of skills initiative programmes to create and improve job opportunities for youths in Nigeria and Africa.

Akobundu said the initiative was in line with the commitment of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the government of Germany on youth empowerment. (NAN)
