NGO advocates practical approach to PHC system

Calabar, Feb. 14, 2017 (NAN) The African Centre for Clinical Governance, Research and Patient Safety (ACCGRPS), an NGO, says it has recommended 2,500 evidence-based guidelines for Primary Healthcare delivery system in Nigeria.
Prof. Joseph Ana, the Country Director of ACCGRPS, disclosed this on Tuesday in Calabar while addressing newsmen on efforts to institutionalise clinical governance in the country.
Ana said that a survey conducted by the World Bank in 2011 on clinical governance in parts of Africa, Asia and Europe scored Nigeria low, hence, the need for research on Practical Approach to Care Kit (PACK).
He said: “Clinical Governance was first introduced into the country in 2004 by the Cross River Government, while in 2011, the World Bank carried out a survey in parts of Africa, Asia and other parts of the world on clinical governance.
“The result about Nigeria was not very encouraging. So, Nigeria is now working on clinical governance. We brought the guideline into Nigeria and throughout the whole of 2016, we have been trying to domesticate it.
“PACK Nigeria has 2,500 recommendations of which all are backed by 2017 evidence and will be updated yearly according to international best practices.’’
He said that PACK was an integrated guideline, where every healthcare worker at the PHC level can use it, adding that this will replace the current standing order being used by PHCs in the country.
“The doctor, the nurses and even the security man at the gate,’’ he said.
He explained that PACK helps to promote team work among all the health workers at the primary healthcare level for optimum result.
He disclosed that Cross River would be used as pilot state for the implementation of PACK in Nigeria. (NAN)
