WPD: Pharmacists want individuals to prioritise healthcare

Abuja, Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) Stakeholders in the Pharmaceutical industry have advised the general public to prioritise to their healthcare and stop craving over daily chores at the detriment of healthy living.
The stakeholders, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), made the call at the commemoration of the World Pharmacists Day (WPD), organised by the society in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the WPD is commemorated on Sept. 25 annually and the theme for 2018 is “Pharmacists: Your medicines experts’’.
Mrs Bridget Otote, immediate past Chairman, FCT Chapter of the society at a sideline interview with NAN, decried that large number of the populace in the quest for daily living pay less attention to their health.
Otote also the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the 2018 WPD, emphasised that often time due to hardship people undermine their health challenge and go after one business or the other.
“In as much as we are busy, in as much as times are hard, in as much as we are trying to survive if we are not healthy we cannot make headway in whatever business we indulge in.
“Let’s take our health seriously. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” she said.
On this year’s theme, Otote described it as a forum of experts in drug production, drug information and drug dispensing, among others.
He however cautioned the public against patronising illegal premises, describing such practice as harmful to their health.
Prof. Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, also advised the general public to desist from patronising quacks and drug hawkers, adding that majority of those drugs are unwholesome.
The director-general, who was represented by Mrs Chizoba Maduagwuna, Director of Pharmaceutical Services in the agency, however urged Nigerians to report any illegal premises in their domain.
According to her, this will enable the agency swing into action and reduce the prevalence of drug hawking in the country and at the long run safeguard the health of Nigerians.
NAN also reports that the WPD is set aside by the Council of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2009 during its congress at Istanbul, Turkey.
It is aimed at showcasing the key position pharmacists occupy as the backbone of healthcare in many different settings. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 15, 2017 (NAN) Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF), an NGO, on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to make the fight against human trafficking a national priority.

The Executive Director of WOTCLEF, Mr Abayomi Mighty, made the call while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Mighty described the trend in human trafficking in the country as “worrisome”, saying it has gone beyond sexual exploitation and child labour.

The director said human trafficking in Nigeria is damaging the country’s image in the comity of nations.

He noted that human trafficking is growing unabated in spite of the efforts by National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Network of Civil Society Organisations against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), and WOTCLEF, among others.

“There must be a cohesiveness of government and other stakeholders to give more attention to human trafficking.

“I know our government can do it, I could recall how Federal Government and Lagos State Government brought cases of Ebola to a halt in this country within a short period of time.

“Massive awareness creation is the key to combating the  menace of human trafficking and what is needed to achieve that is the political will of the government,” he said.

Mighty also advised government to increase the funding of NAPTIP to enable the agency tackle human trafficking in the country effectively.

He disclosed that WOTCLEF would soon mount awareness campaigns against the menace. (NAN)

Lafia, March 10, 2017(NAN) Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has challenged his colleagues to always make their constituents’ welfare their top priority in all considerations.

The Speaker, who spoke on Friday in Lafia, at a workshop to train law makers on public hearings, said that the gains for those they represented should be the guiding principle of their contributions to debates and public hearings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop was organised by the Nasarawa Government in conjunction with Multiventures Resources Limited, Jos in Plateau.

He said that the training would help law makers to appreciate the relevance of public hearings to effective legislative proceedings and good governance.

The Theme of the workshop is: “Conducting Public Hearing as a Guide for Honourable Members”.

Balarabe-Abdullahi, who declared the two days workshop open, said that the people of the state would expect more vigorous and robust legislative proceedings after the workshop.

He urged his colleague to take the training seriously in order to contribute their quota to the development of their constituencies, the state and Nigeria.

Balarabe-Abdullahi commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for approving the workshop, and called for more of such avenues towards enhancing effective legislation.

“Public hearings are normally for different aims; it could be for legislative, oversight and investigative purposes. The underlining idea is to promote good governance and to provide the much needed dividend of democracy to the electorates,” he said.

Earlier, Dr. Simeon Ejembi of Multiventures Resources Limited, had said that the workshop would empower the legislators with the requisite knowledge to conduct public hearing for the benefit of the people. (NAN)
