Security: Provost lauds Nasarawa Govt over construction of fence, infrastructures

Lafia, Oct. 22, 2019 (NAN) The Provost, College of Agriculture, Lafia, Dr Musa Maikafi, has commended the Nasarawa Government for the construction of the institution’s fence and the provision of other infrastructures in the interest of the education sector in the state.
Maikafi made the commendation when the State House of Assembly Committee on Education paid an oversight visit to the school on Tuesday in Lafia.
Maikafi said that the fencing of the school has helped in not only securing the school environment but has also helped in ensuring security of lives and property of the staff and students.
The provost also commended the assembly for its intervention in tackling the problems facing the institution by ensuring that the school is fenced as well as the construction of the road network in the school.
“I want to appreciate your efforts in ensuring that the challenges facing the school are being tackled.
“With your support, intervention and collaboration with the state government, the school now has a fence and a road has been constructed from the school gate to the administrative block.
“The government also provided us with a Toyota 18-seater bus and a tractor to boost our activities; we are grateful to you and the state government,” he said.
He further commended the House for passing a bill to into second reading to upgrade the school status from College of Agriculture to College of Agriculture, Science and Technology.
The provost however solicited the support of the committee to tackle the school challenges, including personnel and accreditation of courses, among others.
“We also appeal to you to assist us to get funds for school convocation, implementation of staff promotions, settlement of gratuity, among others,” he urged.
Earlier, Mr Daniel Ogazi, the Chairman of the committee, said that the visit was to assess the budget performance of the school for the 2019 fiscal year.
“We are to perform our constitutional duties of oversight function by assessing your budget performance with the view of addressing any challenges if discovered.
“We have done our best through collaboration with the state government in ensuring that the school was fenced, the road was constructed and other infrastructures provided,” he said.
Ogazi (APC-Kokona East) assured them of the continued determination of the legislature to collaborate with the state executive in order to address the other challenges facing the school for the development of education. (NAN)

AKwanga (Nasarawa State), Jan. 29, 2019 (NAN) Dr Rebecca Umaru, the Provost, College of Education, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, has called on the newly matriculated students of the institution to imbibe the spirit of friendship, peaceful coexistence, industry and excellence in their endeavours.
Umaru made the call on Tuesday in Akwanga during the matriculation ceremony of 4200 new students for 2018/2019 academic session.
She urged the students to study hard in order to excel in their academic pursuit.
“It is necessary to advise you at this juncture; therefore, when you are in doubt of any academic regulations, you must endeavour to seek clarification from the relevant head of department or lecturers.
“This is to help you to avoid costly mistakes that may affect your academic activities or graduation, however, information is power, therefore, make sure always get the right information at the right time,” Umaru said.
She enjoined the new and old students to protect and guard their hostel facilities jealously in their interest and for the overall development of the college.
“Any person or group of persons that causes light out either in the entire hostel or room shall be responsible for the restoration of such light.
“Illegal connection is not therefore allowed because it may cause fire outbreak or outage.
“Use water facilities effectively and report promptly any broken pipes or taps for repairs. We should therefore protect and guard them carefully,” Umaru said.
The provost also advised the students not to harbour any illegal students or friends in their rooms.
She said that the school authority will expel any culprit from the hostel if found guilty.
She advised the students to read their student hand book thoroughly in order to be well guided.
“Disobeying the school rules breeds anarchy in the society and since laws are made to protect us we must obey them.
“Beware of detractors and directionless students who do not know why they are here. They will mislead you into disobeying the College rules,” Umaru said.
She said the college authority will continue to do its best to provide conducive learning environment for all students both in classes and hostels.
She said sporting activities will also be provided for the students’ recreation, “`we hope you will make the best use of them”.
Some of the students told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the matriculation ceremony that they would adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the institution. (NAN)

Bokkos (Plateau) May 4, 2018 (NAN) Mr Patrick Birmiap, Provost, College of Arts and Science, Kurgwi, in Plateau. has decried the lack of university admission slots for candidates that sat Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) examinations.

Birmiap expressed the concern on Friday, when he visited Prof. Yohana Izam, the pioneer Provost of the college, who was recently appointed Vice Chancellor, Plateau State University, Bokkos.

“Students read very hard at the College so as to secure admission into the university but end up ignored by institutions that constitute their catchment areas.

“Enrollment into the Kurgwi college has gradually thinned out because students are no longer confident of securing admission. If the situation continues, the college will suffer,” he said.

He urged the Vice Chancellor to create more slots for the IJMB students, saying that most of them had turned out to be excellent when admitted into universities.

The provost congratulated Izam over his appointment, and expressed confidence that he would make the university a world class centre of learning.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor advised the students of the college to strive to score a minimum of nine points so as to secure admission into the university.

“Gone are the days when students aimed at five to six points in their IJMB examinations. With the changing narrative in the education sector today, nothing less than nine points are required for admission in PLASU.’’

He advised the college’s management to encourage students to target high points, assuring that those with such good results would be accepted into the university.

“We have deliberately created an opening for them to come through Direct Entry, once they score such points.

“I wish to assure the management of CAS that PLASU is ready to admit products of the college into its already accredited 17 degree programmes,’’ he stated.

The Vice Chancellor said that the state university and CAS had the same vision of producing qualified and qualitative manpower for Plateau and Nigeria, and urged CAS management to step up standards to ease the acceptance of its products.(NAN)

College of Health Technology, Pankshin gets new Provost

Pankshin (Plateau) March 17, 2017 (NAN) Mr Pam Dagyang, Deputy Provost, College of Health Technology, Pankshin, Plateau State, has been appointed as the institution’s Provost.

Dagyang takes over from Dr. Jonathan Daboer, who has completed his tenure as head of the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Daboer, at a brief ceremony to hand over to his successor on Friday in Pankshin, declared that he was leaving the college “fully fulfilled”.

“I served the college to the best of my ability; during my tenure, four courses were accredited with only one remaining.

“I also provided new laboratories and upgraded new ones, while lecture halls were built and vehicles, including a shuttle bus, purchased,” he said.

Daboer said that he worked very hard to  acquire a permanent site for the college, and described that struggle as his greatest challenge.

He regretted his inability to restore the Environment Department that was scrapped before he assumed office, but said he was consoled by the fact that he did his best to make that possible.

Daboer congratulated the new  provost and advised him to strive for funds to boost the college’s status as a training ground for quality health personnel.

Responding, Dagyang commended Daboer’s open style of leadership, hinting that he would always seek his counsel toward success.

Mr Yusuf Selchang, the College Registrar, in his remarks, said that the college would miss Daboer’s genuine interest in staff welfare, and particularly lauded his tact and wisdom in the handling of issues. (NAN)
