Ligue 1: Icardi’s quick impact gives PSG late win at brave Brest

Paris, Nov. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Substitute, Mauro Icardi, struck a late goal after only five minutes on the pitch to give Paris St Germain a 2-1 win at Brest in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The capital city side did just enough to bounce back from the previous week’s loss to Dijon.

The Argentine forward  was quickest to react as Brest failed to clear the ball and scored with a shot into the top corner in the 85th minute for his ninth goal in 10 games in all competitions for PSG.

The win lifted the leaders and defending champions up to 30 points from 13 games, 10 ahead of Angers who were playing later on Saturday.

PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico turned away a curling effort from Mathias Autret and had a lucky escape when he sent a clearance straight to Yoann Court whose first-time shot bounced wide of the post.

Court missed another chance by sending his shot into the side-netting.

PSG made the most of their luck by taking the lead in the 39th minute although they had VAR to thank.

Julien Draxler’s through ball found Angel Di Maria who speed away from his marker and dinked the ball over Gautier Larsonneur.
The linesman raised his flag but the decision was overturned two minutes later by VAR and the goal awarded.

Rico made another good save in the second half to deny Romain Perraud before substitute Samuel Grandsir scored a deserved equaliser for Brest as PSG were caught on the break.

Ligue 1: Di Maria sends PSG five points clear as Nice see red

Paris, Oct. 18, 2019 (Reuters/NAN)  Angel Di Maria once again proved his worth with a double that earned Paris St Germain a 4-1 win at Nice and a five-point lead in the Ligue 1 standings on Friday.

The result put PSG on 24 points from 10 games as Nice finished with nine men after Wylan Cyprien and Christophe Herelle were sent off during the last 20 minutes.

They however reduced the arrears in the second half through Ignatius Ganago.

Kylian Mbappe came off the bench in the closing stages to round off the win to mark his return from injury.

Nice are ninth on 13 points.

Nantes, who are second on 19 points, will play Metz on Saturday.

Ligue 1: Mbappe makes decisive return for winning PSG

Paris, Sept. 29, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Kylian Mbappe’s return boosted Paris St-Germain (PSG) on Saturday as the France striker set up Neymar for a soft goal in a 1-0 victory at Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Mbappe, back as a substitute after a lengthy injury, burst down the right flank in the 70th minute.

Neymar then just had to tap in as PSG reclaimed the league lead with 18 points from eight games.

They lead Nantes, who snatched a 1-0 win at Olympique Lyonnais, by two points.

PSG travel to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, without the suspended Neymar, who has scored his team’s last three goals in Ligue 1. (Reuters/NAN)

PSG suffer rare home defeat against Reims

Paris, Sept. 25, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Paris St-Germain (PSG) suffered their second defeat of the season and their first at home in Ligue 1 for 16 months as they lost 2-0 to Stade de Reims on Wednesday.

The French champions, who still lead the standings with 15 points from seven games, looked nothing like the team who crushed Real Madrid 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League last week.

They failed to create clear chances at the Parc des Princes.

Hassane Kamara headed home in the first half and Boulaye Dia doubled the tally with a bicycle kick in added time to give the visitors a deserved victory.

Reims are eighth on 11 points.

Earlier, Victor Osimhen scored his sixth league goal of the season to inspire Lille to a 2-0 home win over Racing Strasbourg.

The 20-year-old Nigerian opened the scoring and Loic Remy doubled the lead as the side from northern France moved up to third in the standings on 13 points.

Angers are second, behind PSG on goal difference, after Rachid Alioui’s late double gave them a 2-0 win at Toulouse.

Olympique Lyonnais extended their winless streak to six games in all competitions.

Goals by Maxwel Cornet and Moussa Dembele were cancelled out by Yoann Court’s double in a 2-2 draw at Stade Brestois.

Lille will take on Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League next week when Lyon, who are 11th in Ligue 1 on nine points, travel to RB Leipzig.

With Idrissa Gueye rested, Marco Verratti suspended and Marquinhos on the bench, PSG, already without injured strikers Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani, struggled at the Parc des Princes, especially in midfield.

Kamara put the visitors ahead on 29 minutes as he headed home from Marshall Munetsi’s cross with his team’s first effort on target.

Eric Choupo-Moting was replaced by Angel Di Maria shortly before the interval after colliding with Neymar but that did little to lift the hosts.

It was Reims who threatened, but Oudin’s crossed shot from inside the area hit Keylor Navas’s right-hand post in the 78th minute.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were unable to create danger in the closing stages and were effectively handed their first home defeat in Ligue 1 since they lost to Rennes 2-0 at the Parc in May 2018.

Neymar strikes late for PSG to win at Olympique Lyon

Lyon (France), Sept. 22, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Neymar struck late again as Paris St-Germain (PSG) beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 to strengthen their French Ligue 1 lead on Sunday.

The Brazil forward, who scored the only goal against Racing Strasbourg last weekend, found the back of the net three minutes from time.

The victory put PSG on 15 points from six games, leaving Lyon in ninth place seven points behind.

Second-placed Angers, who demolished St Etienne 4-1 earlier on Sunday, are three points off the pace.

Ligue 1: Neymar the saviour as PSG beat Strasbourg 1-0

Paris, Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Neymar scored a spectacular last-gasp goal for Paris St Germain that was greeted with more cheers than boos in a 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Racing Strasbourg on Saturday.

It was the Brazilian’s first appearance of the season following a failed transfer to Barcelona.

The forward found the back of the net with a bicycle kick two minutes into stoppage time, drawing mostly applause but a few boos from the Parc des Princes faithful.

PSG lead the standings with 12 points from five games ahead of their Champions League match against Real Madrid on Wednesday, for which Neymar will be suspended.

The result left Strasbourg in 18th place on three points.

“It was sublime. It’s good for him and good for the team,” team mate Idrissa Gueye said.

Neymar was booed by part of the crowd in the first half as he put on a decent performance.

He had angered the PSG fans by saying his best memory as a footballer was PSG’s humiliating 6-1 defeat by Barca at the Camp Nou in the Champions League in 2017.

But he capped his return with a goal that did not mask PSG’s collective mediocrity.

New keeper Keylor Navas made a couple of brilliant saves as the visitors threatened on a few occasions while Mauro Icardi was toothless after coming on as a second-half substitute.

The Argentine striker, however, will be needed against Real on Wednesday in the absence of Neymar and the injured Kylian Mbappe.

The French international was sorely missed, just like Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani who may come back for the Real clash.

Strasbourg had the first clear chance when Navas stretched to tip away Ludovic Ajorque’s sudden strike in the 18th minute and PSG did not muster a single shot on target in the first half.

The hosts stepped up gear in the closing stages, with Neymar scoring his 21st goal in 20 Ligue 1 games at the Parc des Princes.

Inter Milan forward Icardi joins PSG on one-year loan

Milan, Sept. 2, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi, their leading scorer in each of the last five seasons and former captain, has joined Paris St Germain on a year-long loan, the Serie A side said on Monday.

The move will interrupt a turbulent six-year spell at Inter for the Argentine, who has fallen out with fans along on the way.

He also provided fodder for gossip columns thanks to his marriage to Wanda Nara, a media personality who also acts as his agent.

Inter said that as part of the deal it had also extended Icadi’s contract by two years until 2022.

The move was to avoid the possibility of him leaving as a free agent next year.

“The Argentine forward has signed for the French club on an initial year-long loan with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of this period,” said an Inter statement.

Earlier, Gazzetta dello Sport published a photograph of Icardi and Nara at Malpensa airport, saying they would board a private jet for Paris to finalise the deal.

The 26-year-old is an out-and-out centre forward who is deadly in the penalty area but whose contribution elsewhere on the pitch has been questioned.

He scored 124 goals in 219 appearances in all competitions during six years at Inter.

Despite his scoring exploits, Icardi fell out with the club’s hard-core fans over his account of an argument with supporters in his autobiography in 2016.

Curva Nord ultras responded that “Icardi is not our captain, not now or ever”, and applauded when he missed a penalty in one of Inter’s next games.

In February, he was stripped of the captaincy after becoming embroiled in protracted negotiations over a new contract.

He then said he could not play because of a knee injury, although the club said a medical examination had found nothing wrong.

He returned to the side in April after talks between his lawyer and the club.

Luciano Spalletti, the Inter coach at the time, said then that it was “humiliating” for Inter to have to negotiate with a player to get him to play.

Spalletti left the club at the end of last season and was replaced by Antonio Conte, who said that Icardi did not figure in his plans for the future. (Reuters/NAN)

Ligue 1: PSG lose again as Montpellier come from behind to win 3-2

Paris, April 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Montpellier veteran Souleymane Camara netted a late winner as they came from behind to beat Paris St Germain 3-2 in Ligue 1 on Tuesday.

The defeat ensures that PSG, who are Ligue 1 champions, continue their stuttering end to the season.

It was a third defeat in their last four league games for PSG, who also let a two-goal lead slip in Saturday’s French Cup final before losing to Stade Rennes on penalties.

PSG, who secured the Ligue 1 title earlier this month, remain 16 points ahead of second-placed Lille despite the latest setback.

PSG and Montpellier exchanged own goals in the first half before Angel di Maria put the visitors 2-1 ahead just after the hour mark.

Yet Andy Delort equalised after a quick attack launched from the back by Montpellier with 11 minutes left before a horror defensive error allowed the hosts to steal the ball.
And 36-year-old Camara’s shot was deflected in to win the game with time running out.

‎Lille draw at Reims to leave PSG on brink of title

Reims (France), April 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Second-placed Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at Stade Reims on Sunday to leave leaders Paris St-Germain (PSG) on the brink of an eighth Ligue 1 title.

Rui Fontes’ second half opener was cancelled out by Reims’ Remi Oudin to leave Lille on 61 points with seven games left.

PSG, who have 80 points, will clinch the title if they beat Racing Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes later on Sunday.

At Reims’ Auguste Delaune Stadium, Fonte headed home 10 minutes into the second half from a Thiago Mendes corner kick.

Oudin equalised 12 minutes from full time with a low shot, after being set up by Tristan Dingome.

PSG say Neymar back to training Wednesday

Paris, April 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Brazil’s Paris St-Germain (PSG) striker Neymar will return to training on Wednesday for on-field tests after 10 weeks on the sidelines because of a foot injury.

“Neymar’s recovery from injury is progressing well and he will return to training on Wednesday as scheduled for on-pitch tests,” reigning French champions PSG said on Twitter.

The Ligue 1 club said on Tuesday that their specialists would carry out “a full medical and radiological assessment in two weeks’ time.”
