RB Leipzig eliminate Tottenham Hotspur for first-ever Champions League quarter-final spot

Leipzig (Germany), March 10, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer scored two early goals as they eased past last year’s finalists Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in their UEFA Champions League last 16 second leg on Tuesday.

The victory helped the German side to reach their first quarter-finals 4-0 on aggregate.

Sabitzer fired the German side in front with a low shot from about 20 metres after 10 minutes and they never looked back.

The German side pinned the visitors, who were without injured strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, in their own half.

The RB Leipzig’s captain was then given far too much space in the 21st minute to head home Angelino’s cross at the near post after Serge Aurier’s poor clearance.

And just as the Spurs’ players heads started to drop, Emil Forsberg completed the win with a third in the 87th minute.

Injury-ravaged Tottenham, who were also missing winger Steven Bergwijn and full-back Ben Davies, struggled to keep up with RB Leipzig’s pace.

They were also constantly exposed at the back while posing no threat upfront.

Jose Mourinho’s team were without a win in any competition since their 1-0 first-leg defeat by RB Leipzig in London last month.

But they did manage a shot on goal through Giovani Lo Celso late in the first half.

However, the absence of Kane and Son proved costly.(Reuters/NAN)

UCL: Werner penalty kick gives RB Leipzig win at Tottenham Hotspur

London, Feb. 19, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Timo Werner’s second half penalty kick gave a dominant RB Leipzig a deserved 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday.

Werner slotted past Hugo Lloris in the 58th minute after Ben Davies had fouled Konrad Laimer, putting the Bundesliga high-flyers in control ahead of the second leg on March 10.

In their first appearance in the tournament’s knockout stage, RB Leipzig could have taken a larger advantage back home to Germany but for poor finishing and saves by Lloris.

Tottenham, runners-up last season, were outplayed for the majority of the game with Patrick Schick and Werner wasting several chances for RB Leipzig while Angelino was denied by the woodwork.

Handicapped by having no recognised strikers in the absence of injured Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Tottenham struggled as an attacking force.

However, Giovani Lo Celso was impressive and almost equalised with a free-kick against the post.

RB Leipzig’s intensity dropped late on and Lucas Moura headed wastefully over for Tottenham who now face a tough task to keep their Champions League hopes alive. (Reuters/NAN)

Bundesliga: Leipzig go second with 4-2 comeback win at Hertha Berlin

Berlin, Nov. 9, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) RB Leipzig cruised past hosts Hertha Berlin 4-2 on Saturday to provisionally go second in the Bundesliga table, before champions Bayern Munich host Borussia Dortmund later.

Maximilian Mittelstaedt put the home side ahead in the 32nd with a thundering shot, but Leipzig’s Timo Werner responded with a penalty six minutes later.

Marcel Sabitzer then turned the game around on the stroke of halftime with a deflected shot.

Kevin Kampl then timed his run down the left wing to perfection to beat the offside trap and drill in Leipzig’s third in the 86th minute.
Werner then tapped in his 11th goal of the campaign in stoppage time before Davie Selke pulled one back for the hosts seconds later.

Leipzig are on 21 points, with Dortmund on 19 and Bayern a further point behind. Leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach entertain Werder Bremen on Sunday. (Reuters/NAN)

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich edge Paderborn 3-2 to go top, Leipzig slip up

Berlin, Sept. 28, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Wasteful Bayern Munich were made to sweat for a 3-2 win at Paderborn that sent them top of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The climb on the table came after RB Leipzig went down 3-1 at home to Schalke 04 for their first loss of the season.

Bayern squandered a bagful of chances, hit the woodwork and conceded two goals in the second half in an inconsistent performance that put a damper on their league lead.

The Bavarians went in front through Serge Gnabry in the 15th minute after a sensational start that saw them hit the post and create chance after chance.

Remarkably top scorer Robert Lewandowski managed to somehow miss a completely open goal from 10 metres, firing wide.

Gnabry then set up Philippe Coutinho 10 minutes after the restart for their second goal but instead of scoring again it was the hosts who came alive with Kai Proeger’s powerful volley in the 68th.

Lewandowski got on the scoresheet with his 10th league strike when he chipped keeper Jannik Huth in the 80th to restore their two-goal cushion.

But a sensational 30-metre missile from Jamilu Collins four minutes later renewed the hosts’ hopes and set up a nervous finale.

Bayern are top on 14 points, one ahead of Leipzig who were caught on 13 by Schalke in third after a fourth straight win.

Schalke went ahead with a powerful Salif Sane header in the 29th and doubled their lead through Amine Harit two minutes from halftime.

Rabbi Matondo’s solo effort essentially killed off the game with Emil Forsberg grabbing Leipzig’s 200th league goal seven minutes from time.

Schalke and Leipzig were joined on 13 points by Borussia Moenchengladbach, 3-0 winners at Hoffenheim, and Bayer Leverkusen, who beat Augsburg by the same score.

Last-gasp winner sends Leipzig into German Cup semi-finals

Augsburg (Germany), April 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) RB Leipzig recovered from conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to score a winner in the last minute of extra time.

The effort helped them to beat Augsburg 2-1 on Tuesday to book their place in the German Cup semi-finals.

Marcel Halstenberg scored with a penalty kick in the 120th minute, after the game went to extra time thanks to Alfred Finnbogason’s equaliser with the game’s last kick after 90 minutes.

Timo Werner had given the visitors the lead in the 74th minute with a well-placed shot from 18 metres after a quick break.

Earlier, second division club Hamburg SV reached the last four with a 2-0 win over Paderborn courtesy of Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s double strike.

Bayern Munich take on second tier Heidenheim on Wednesday while Schalke 04 host Werder Bremen in the other quarter-finals.(Reuters/NAN)

Leipzig’s Forsberg banned for rest of season

Berlin, April 24, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) RB Leipzig will be without playmaker Emil Forsberg in their battle for a UEFA Champions League spot in the remaining three Bundesliga matches, the German Football Association said on Tuesday.

The World Cup-bound Sweden midfielder was handed a three-game suspension after being sent off in Leipzig’s 2-5 home loss to Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Forsberg was banned following a red card for hitting an opponent in the neck as he tried to break free from a challenge.

Leipzig, last season’s surprise runners-up, only have a slim chance of a top-four finish, lying in sixth place on 47 points, four behind Bayer Leverkusen in fourth.

The top four clubs qualify for the lucrative UEFA Champions League group stage.

Leipzig travel to struggling Mainz 05 this week before taking on VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin.(Reuters/NAN)
