Kano youths commends Dangote, Fayemi for reconciling Kano leaders

Kano, June 8, 2019 (NAN) Some youths in Kano metropolis on Saturday commended business mogul Aliko Dangote and Ekiti State Gov. Kayode Fayemi for brokering peace between Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dangote and Fayemi intervened in the crisis between feuding parties on in Abuja.

Reactto the development, some of the youths who spoke with NAN on Saturday in Kano, expressed satisfaction and appreciation with the reconciliation.

According to some of them, the reconciliation is in the best interest of the state, the region and the country as a whole.‎

Mr Ali Sani told NAN that the amicable resolution of the differences by the two gentlemen  was a welcome development.‎

He stressed that embracing peace and understanding would surely facilitate great success in the development of the state and the Emirate.‎‎

Malam Musa Saleh, another youth, said the reconciliation provided much relief to many residents because the crisis was ‎new to them.

“Since the issue started we are not happy with it because the state is divided across‎ political lines,” he said.

Yet another youth, Ms Halima Sa’ad, told NAN that the situation was one of the few bad things that could happen to Kano if left without mediation.‎‎

‎She commended Dangote for wading into the matter and reconciling the two leaders. She then urged them to sheathe their swords in the best interest of the state.‎

‎On his part, Mr Bala Adamu, also commended Dangote and Fayemi for their efforts in bringing the two figures together again for peace to reign.

He then urged followers of both leaders to keep praying for peace, stability and progress of the state and country at large.‎

‎Mr Fidelis Ade also expressed his appreciation with the outcome of the mediation efforts, noting that it will go a long way to consolidate the relative peace enjoyed in the state.

‎NAN recalls that the State Government on Thursday issued a query to the first class monarch over alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion by the Emirate Council.

The state government also created four new Emirates from the ancient Kano Emirate, a move believed to be calculated at reducing the sphere and influence of the Emir of Kano.

The state police command had also Saturday morning banned all forms of assembly, procession, rallies and protest to prevent breach of peace arising from the tension generated by the crisis. (NAN)

Abuja, Dec. 19, 2018 (NAN) A Political Economist, Mr Ismaila Suleiman, has said that the decision of President Muhammadu Buahri to set up a technical committee to look into the implementation of new national minimum wage was to avoid crisis between the states and the Federal Government.

Suleiman said this on Wednesday in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that the President was mindful of the economic implications the decision may result to the unemployed youths, especially at the state level.

According to him, the President made a wise decision for setting up a committee to look into the mode of implementation of the new minimum wage to ensure that it does not add financial burden to some states who are willing to implement the new minimum wage.

He however advised state governments not to use the new national minimum wage as a reason not to engage fresh workers into the services of their respective states.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Buhari had earlier assured that a bill on implementation of the New Minimum Wage would soon be sent to the National Assembly for passage.

Buhari said this while presenting the 2019 Budget proposal of N8.8 trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly.

He assured that he was committed to addressing the minimum wage issue, saying he had directed the setting up of a technical committee to look at mode of implementation.

Buhari said that the work of the committee would be the basis of finance bill which will be submitted to the national assembly alongside the minimum wage bill.

According to him, the move is to minimise inflationary impact as well as ensure that its introduction does not lead to job losses.

NAN also recalls that the Amal Pepple Tripartite Committee on the Review of New National Minimum Wage, had on Nov. 6, submitted its report to the President.

The committee recommended N30,000 as the new national minimum wage. (NAN)

Minister tasks healthcare providers, institutions on adverse drug reaction

Abuja, Sept 24, 2018 (NAN) The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has directed healthcare providers and institutions to monitor, detect and report Adverse Drug Reactions to appropriate authorities.
He gave the order at the opening ceremony of Nigeria Specific Meeting on Pharmacovigilance Africa (PAVIA) on Monday in Abuja.
Adewole was represented by Mr Mashood Lawal, Director, Food and Drug Services, in the Ministry.
The minister said that government had developed policies for stakeholders in health sectors to detect, document and report adverse drug reactions associated with use of medicines in the country.
He said that in line with the Pharmcovigilance policy, the ministry was aware of NAFDAC’s partnership with National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programe (NTBLCP), Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) and University of Benin.
According to him, the partnership with the agencies and other stakeholders is to monitor, detect, document and report adverse drug reactions associated with medicines used in the TB programme.
“I will like to use this opportunity to call on all PAVIA partners to strengthen Pharmacovigilance systems in Nigeria particularly those related to NTBLCP.
“PAVIA partners should also effectively detect and report adverse reactions that may be associated with new drugs for Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) Tuberculosis.
“This is pertinent because Nigeria is classified amongst the 14 countries with high burden of MDR-TB and TB/HIV disease,” he said.
According to him, TB incidence rate in 2016 indicates 219 per 100,000 population with 407,000 estimated cases.
He said that the mortality rate of all forms of TB excluding HIV with TB stood at 62 per 100,000 population during the period.
The minister urged all the major partners and stakeholders to strengthen their coordination mechanism to effectively implement PAVIA project in the country.
He expressed confident that the meeting would provide the forum for sensitisation and mobilisation for the implementation of PAVIA project in Nigeria.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, explained that PAVIA project was to strengthen Pharmacovigilance (PV) in four African countries of Ethiopia, Nigeria, Swaziland and Tanzania.
She stated that the project would enhance governance of PV systems by strengthening regulatory and organisational structures as well as defining clear roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders.
“It will improve efficiency and effectiveness of national surveillance of adverse drug reaction and implementation of tools and technologies for their detection, reporting, analysis and dissemination.
“It will build capacity and skills to sufficiently conduct safety monitoring activities throughout the country,” Adeyeye said.

Abuja, May 22, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) says the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has been deliberately peddling falsehood and twisting facts to get the sympathy of the public.
The FCT NMA Chairman, Dr Chiedozie Achonwa, said this it at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
He noted that JOHESU’s misinformation and manufacture of non- existent figures was just to hoodwink stakeholders.
He said that JOHESU would get the sympathy of the innocent and unsuspecting public who may tend to believe their propaganda if NMA kept quite.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that JOHESU last week alerted the public on alleged efforts by Nigerian doctors to frustrate ongoing talks to end the four-week-old strike embarked upon by the union.
It also accused the Ministries of Health and Labour of collaborating with the doctors to suppress JOHESU’s legitimate demands from the government.
But the NMA branch chairman clarified that the protracted JOHESU strike was essentially against medical doctors.
“We must let Nigerians know that the unnecessary strike is centred on quest for equal pay with medical doctors as well as leadership contestation in our hospitals.
“It must be reiterated that the NMA has never been against any wage, salary increase or adjustment for health workers.
“It must be emphasised that what JOHESU is asking is not necessarily increment in salary per se, but equal pay as doctors,” he said.
He said that the concept of wage relativity was used in wage management to ensure that only equal job of equal value attract equal pay.
Achonwa threatened that the association would not accept any attempt to further distort or erode the existing relativity as agreed and signed in collective bargaining agreement of 2014.
He said that doctors in the FCT have been going about their legitimate duties in all public facilities.
“They have to go extra miles to cover for the absence of the allied health professionals in order to ensure service delivery to patients.
“All hospitals in the FCT are working at 80 per cent capacity even without the JOHESU,’’ the chairman said.
He however advised the allied health professionals to be reasonable in their demands, suspend their strike, resume work and join the doctors to continue the good work for the benefit of the masses. (NAN)
