La Liga: Real Madrid held to frustrating draw by Valladolid

Madrid, Aug. 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Real Madrid’s early optimism was punctured by an 88th-minute equaliser by Real Valladolid as Zinedine Zidane’s side stumbled to a 1-1 draw in their first home game of the La Liga season on Saturday.

Karim Benzema looked to have fired Madrid to a second straight win after last week’s confidence-boosting 3-1 victory at Celta Vigo when he scored in the 82nd minute with a splendid piece of skill.

The Frenchman, Madrid’s top scorer last campaign, controlled a pass with his back to goal and swivelled before striking his finish into the far corner to give the home side a deserved lead.

Serbian striker Luka Jovic had gone close to breaking the deadlock earlier in the game when he headed against the crossbar barely a minute after coming off the bench.

Valladolid had offered little in attack but grabbed a shock equaliser with only their second shot on target when Sergi Guardiola struck through the legs of Thibaut Courtois.

The goal plunged a happy Santiago Bernabeu crowd into silence and left Madrid with four points after two games.

“I’m left with a bitter taste because we did the hardest thing, which was to score in a second half where we did not produce our best performance,” Madrid coach Zidane told a news conference.

“It’s a bad feeling when you concede an equaliser so soon after scoring. We played well in the first half, but we were unable to find the net.”

Real were without suspended midfielder Luka Modric but Rodriguez made his first appearance in a Madrid shirt for over two years.

After a strong start in the unforgiving summer heat of the Spanish capital, Madrid struggled to maintain their intensity after the interval.

But they found a breakthrough when it looked least likely due to the quick thinking of Benzema.

They were powerless to deal with the speed of Valladolid’s counterattack which saw Guardiola level six minutes later,

However, Zidane said the draw was not down to his side’s waning energy levels.

“We were less convinced of ourselves in the second half.

“We did not play with fluidity and when we lack that we run into problems. But we cannot blame our result on the heat, our problems today were not physical ones,” he said. (Reuters/NAN)

Struggling Valencia frustrated by Real Valladolid

Madrid, Jan. 12, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Ruben Alcaraz’s perfect free-kick earned Real Valladolid a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Valencia in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday as the hosts’ disappointing season continued.

Valencia dominated the game but struggled to find a breakthrough, with Real Valladolid goalkeeper Jordi Masip saving Rodrigo Moreno’s second-half penalty kick.

Santi Mina missed from close range before Valencia captain Dani Parejo eventually put his side ahead in the 71st minute.

However Alcaraz’s brilliantly-hit equaliser in the 82nd minute kept Valencia provisionally ninth, upsetting frustrated fans in the Mestalla.

A section of the fans whistled at their team at the end.

“I think the team had a great game but we were not very accurate in front of goal,” said Moreno.

“I apologise to my teammates for missing the penalty kick. We have to keep working.

“The team did great work overall. We had three great chances, and we are all a bit responsible (for not finishing them).”(Reuters/NAN)

La Liga: Struggling Rayo Vallecano win at Real Valladolid after surviving late penalty kick scare

Valladolid (Spain), Jan. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Spanish La Liga strugglers Rayo Vallecano grabbed a nervy 1-0 win at Real Valladolid on Saturday to boost their chances of top-flight survival.

The victory seemed uncertain at a time during the game, but Rayo Vallecano had to rely on a late penalty kick save to take all three points.

Midfielder Alvaro Medran gave the Madrid minnows a perfect start by scoring after 29 seconds, finishing off a smart team move from close range.

The goal is the fastest of the season so far in the Spanish La Liga.

Real Valladolid were awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute but Rayo Vallecano’s Macedonian goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski guessed the right way to palm midfielder Michel’s spot kick away.

The home team are 14th on the table and are without a home league win since October.

Rayo Vallecano, who are second bottom, still had to withstand a series of hurried late attacks from the hosts.

But they held on to claim a second consecutive victory for the first time this season.

The win took them level on 16 points with the two teams above them, Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal, who are both in action later this weekend.(Reuters/NAN)
