Next level: Nasarawa Assembly tasks LG legislative, executive on cordial relationship

Karu (Nasarawa State), Oct. 15, 2019(NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has advised the legislative and executive arms of local government councils to maintain robust working relationship to take their councils and the state to the next level of development.
Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, the Chairman of the committee, gave the advice on Tuesday when the committee paid an oversight visit to Karu Local Government Council of the state.
Alkali also urged the stakeholders and other citizens to support their chairmen in order to take their councils and the state to higher level of development.
The chairman added that every leader needs the support and prayers of his people to succeed, hence the need for his call.
“We are here to see things by ourselves as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended has empowered us to do so.
“We are out to reposition the local government system and we will continue to do everything humanly possible to make the local government system work effectively.
“We are delighted that from four months now, the staff members of local government councils are enjoying 100 per cent of their salaries.
“This was a result of the staff screening exercise in which the House has directed all local government chairmen to conduct workers screening.
“This is to tackle the menace of ghost workers and illegal promotion, among other negative acts, affecting the local government system in the state,” he said.
He restated the assembly’s continued commitment to enact laws and pass resolutions that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people at the grassroots and the state at large.
Responding, Mr Samuel Akala, the Chairman of Karu Local Government Council, commended the committee for the visit while assuring them of his continued commitment to develop the area.
Akala told the committee that the problem of cultism and other security challenges have dropped drastically in the area.
He said that the council has embarked on providing infrastructure such as road construction and solar powered street lights in order to improve on the quality of lives of people in the area.
He however told the committee to address some of the challenges facing the council like the activities of land grabbers and poor infrastructure. (NAN)

Development: Lawmaker seeks executive, legislative cordial relationship

Nasarawa (Nasarawa State), Aug 13, 2019 (NAN) Rep. Abdulmumini Ari (APC-Nasarawa/Toto) says cordial relationship between the 9th Assembly and the executive arm will take the country to the next level of development.

Ari stated this on Tuesday while fielding questions from newsmen in Nasarawa, Nasarawa Local Area of the state.

He said effective synergy between the executive and legislature would not only promote peace but would also enhance development across the country.

“The clear distinction between the 9th and 8th assemblies is about the leadership.

“If you look at the leadership of the 9th assembly in the House of Representatives under my boss, Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, and Rt. Hon Ahmed Idris-Wase as Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

“There is that synergy and cordial relationship with the executive even before they emerged as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 9th assembly.

“You can see that when we are preparing to go on recess, Mr President has sent ministerial list for screening.

“We have done that in order to meet up with the aspirations and yearnings of Nigerians,” he said.

Ari pledged to initiate different policies and programmes that would empower the youths and other people of his constituency.

“By God grace, I will represent my people well and to assure of my readiness to key into good policies and programmes that will have direct bearing on the lives of my constituents.

“I also want to use this medium to assure the people of my constituency of inclusive and quality representation at the House of Representatives.

“This is to bring the much needed dividends of democracy to them so as to improve on their lives,” he said.

He called on the people of his constituency and the state to support President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Abdullahi Sule to succeed.

The lawmaker urged his constituents and other Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their affiliations.(NAN)

Speaker attributes Al-Makura’s developmental strides to executive, legislative relationship

Lafia, May 29, 2019 (NAN) The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has attributed the development stride recorded by former Gov. Tanko Al-Makura to a robust working relationship between Al-Makura and members of the fifth Assembly in the state.
Abdullahi made this known on Wednesday in Lafia while fielding questions from newsmen on the sidelines of the inuaguration of Gov. Abdullahi Sule.
He said that effective synergy between the executive and the legislative is key to meaningful development, hence the need of his leadership to give the outgone governor the needed cooperation in the last four years.
According to him, the effective and good relationship between Al-Makura and my leadership is the bedrock of the achievements that Al-Makura has achieved.
“And everybody attested to the fact that we have a prefect relationship between the executive and the legislature. I am proud to achieve that.
“Gov. Al-Makura’s administration came on board in 2011. I was not part of the government in 2011, but we were monitoring some of his activities outside the state.
“And then because of his laudable achievements at that time, some of us picked interest in his government and somebody like me I prayed so hard for God to give me the opportunity to be part of his government and luckily in 2015, I contested and won election as member of the state House of Assembly.
“When I came, I did not only became a member but also became the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
“That afforded me an opportunity to work closely with him and I discovered that Al-Makura has passion for the state, he has the fear of God.
“And then in fact I decided to give him all my heart to work with him so that collectively we are going to achieve and take Nasarawa State to the higher level.
“I can proudly say today we were able to achieve that because Al-Makura has done a lot in all most all sectors of the economy which had direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state,’’ he said.
Abdullahi wished Al-Makura well in his new political sojourn as a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The state number three citizen therefore called on the people of the state to support the new governor to enable him to also succeed. (NAN)

  1. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has resolved to meet with security chiefs to evolve a holistic solution to the security challenges before the country.

Chairman of the forum, Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara in Northwest Nigeria stated this while briefing newsmen after a meeting in Abuja.

Yari expressed the governors’ displeasure over Sunday’s killings in Plateau Northcentral Nigeria, and called for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

  1. Prof. Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General, National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control has advocated a national prescription policy aimed at tackling drug abuse in the country.

Adeyeye made the call at a news conference organised  in Abuja to commemorate the 2018 World International Day Against Drug Abuse.

She also called for closer collaboration between the Nigerian Customs Service, Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and NAFDAC to stop the importation, distribution, and use of illicit drugs.

  1. The EU has agreed to work closely with Nigeria to find solutions to illegal migration.

Deputy Delegation to the EU, Mr Richard Young,  made this known in his address at the ‘‘Abuja Policy Debate’’ organised by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation, an NGO handling the ongoing collaboration on migration between the EU, Germanys and Nigeria.

  1. The World Health Organisation says a new drug – Carbetocin – has the potential to save the lives of thousands of women during childbirth annually.

The UN agency said Carbetocin, with improved benefits could compete with Oxytocin, a stand-by drug used to prevent potentially-fatal bleeding after childbirth.

  1. Similarly, Australian scientists have taken a crucial step toward developing a new malaria vaccine by using a novel “atomic-scale” blueprint to track how the parasite invades human cells.

The group said that with the unprecedented level of detail on the blueprint, new therapies would be designed to target and disrupt malaria parasite and prevent it from hijacking human red blood cells spreading through the blood to infect others.

Daura (Katsina State), Dec. 28, 2017 (NAN) The Speaker, Katsina State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Kusada, has attributed the existing cordial working relationship between executive and legislative arms of government in the state to the transparent disposition of Gov. Aminu Masari.
Kusada (APC), said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Daura on Thursday.
He said Masari has upheld the country’s and APC constitutions in the discharge of his official functions, noting that the governor carried the remaining arms of government along.
Kusada reiterated the commitment and determination of the APC-led administration at the federal, state and local government levels in transforming the nation as well as building a brighter and promising future for the citizens.
He said Masari’s administration has succeeded in instilling discipline and accountability in the state civil service, stressing “we (Katsina State Government) also adhere strictly to the nation’s procurement law’’.
The speaker pledged that the House would continue to enact laws that would accelerate the socio-economic development of the state.
“We (legislators) would not relent in the discharge of our constitutional mandate,’’ said Kusada.
He lauded the efforts of federal government in repositioning the nation through transparent and accountable leadership, stressing that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation over his anti-corruption crusade, war against insecurity and rejuvenation of the economy.
He noted that the president has restored hope and confidence among Nigerians, saying “Nigerians are now highly respected and regarded even at the international community due to the positive change in leadership of the country’’.
Kusada was appointed Speaker last year following the removal of his predecessor, Alhaji Sabiu Muduru. (NAN)

Ile-Ife (Osun), Jan. 24, 2017 (NAN) Members of the newly constituted Governing Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have been charged to improve on the relationship between the town and the gown.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, gave the charge while the council, led by its Chairman, Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi, paid him a courtesy visit in his palace on Tuesday.

The Oba said that the ancient town of Ile-Ife yearns to feel more of the presence of the school, especially in the area of providing food security.

“The town can be impacted by the school using the natural resources God had endowed it with to create employment among the teeming youths and bringing about food security in the community,” he said.

The monarch said he had observed a spiritual attachment between the institution and the palace, explaining that anytime crises erupted on the campus, such were always settled in the palace.

He described the chairman of the governing council as a man he personally respected for his easygoing lifestyle, administrative competence and charisma.

The Oba also appreciated the efforts of the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, saying it is awesome how he (Elujoba) took it upon himself to bring back peace to the university.

He commended the interim management team of the institution for a job well done and pledged his support in making the dream of the founding fathers of university come to reality.

Ogunbiyi appreciated the Ooni for his past fatherly interventions in the university and promised that his team would give all it takes to justify their appointment.

He described the council members as men competent enough to do the job; men ready to assiduously work towards resolving all issues hindering the progress of the university. (NAN)
