Traditional ruler lauds Buhari for construction of 13km OLA/Akpata road in Nasarawa

Wakama (Nasarawa State), Nov. 12, 2019 (NAN) The District Head of Wakama in Nasarawa State, Mr Adams-Makka Nangba, has commanded President Muhammadu Buhari for the construction of 13km OLA/Akpata road in Akun Development Area of the state.

The traditional ruler said the project would boost the socioeconomic activities of the people of the area and the state at large.

Nangba made the commendation on Tuesday during a meeting with village heads of the area in his palace at Wakama.

He said that the construction of the road would not would also boost transport system as well as the standard of living of the people of the area and its environs.

“We are grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for the construction of OLA/Akpata road as the construction of the road will also ease the problem facing my people and other neighbouring communities plying the road.

“We are also grateful to Gov. Abdullahi Sule, Sen. Godiya Akwashiki and other national and state assembly members as well as other stakeholders for influencing the construction of the road.

“As we are all aware that along this road, we have Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Girls College, OLA Hospital and the Secretariat of our development area, among others.

“We are grateful to the President as we will continue to support his administration’s policies and programmes to succeed,” he said.

Nangba said that the meeting was aimed at discussing issues in order to take the chiefdom and the area to the greater height.

He assured the state government of his people’s readiness eadiness to donate land for developmental purposes in the area.

“We are ready to donate land to government whenever the need arises in the interest of development,” he added.

He urged the village heads to continue to initiate programmes aimed at promoting peace in their domains considering the importance of peace to societal development.

Besides, he urged his subjects and other Nigerians to support the present administration at all levels to enable the leaders to succeed in the task ahead of them.

The district head further enjoined Nigerians to live in peace, respect constituted authorities and be their brothers keepers for the overall development of the country. (NAN)

Oyo Govt seeks FG support on road rehabilitation

Ibadan, Oct. 31, 2019 (NAN) The Oyo State Government has called for Federal Government intervention in rehabilitating ailing federal roads across the state.
The state Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. Prof Raphael Afonja, made the appeal in Ibadan on Thursday while fielding questions from newsmen during an assessment tour of Oyo-Iseyin road.
It would be recalled that the Oyo-Iseyin road had attracted public outcry because of its state of disrepair.
He said the call for assistance was necessitated by paucity of funds on the part of the state government.
Afonja said that the federal government had made it clear that it would not reimburse states that embarked on such projects.
He however said the state government had commenced work on the Moniya-Iseyin to reduce the challenges faced by the people.
“We do not currently have the financial muscle to embark on the reconstruction of the Iseyin-Oyo road.
“We will explore the possibility of attracting federal government’s attention to reconstruct the road.
“As a government, we shall open up communication channels to ensure that the Iseyin-Oyo road makes the list of federal government’s priority projects,” he said. (NAN)

Nassarawa Eggon (Nasarawa State), Oct. 7, 2019 (NAN) The Wakama community in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has embarked on the rehabilitation of eight roads linking the community with neighbouring Akwanga Local Government Area in order to boost their socio-economic activities.
Mr Adams Nangba, the District Head of Wakama, who led hundreds of his subjects on Monday to embark on the repair of Ola/Akpata road, said that the exercise became imperative considering the bad nature of the roads.
He said that the rehabilitation of the road would also boost transportation system, agricultural activities and improve on the standard of living of the people of the area and those plying the roads.
According to him, the rehabilitation of the roads was part of the community’s responsibilities in order to complement government efforts in improving on the agricultural, socio-economic activities and reduce the plight residents faced in transporting their goods to neighbouring markets.
“As you can see, in order to improve on the socio-economic activities and transportation system of my people, I have decided to mobilise my subjects to embark on rehabilitation of roads across the district.
“This Akpata road is linking different communities and there is OLA Hospital, OLA Girls College, as well as the headquarters of Akun Development Area along this road.
“I also mobilise people in Alashe, Awogen Akun and Ebugu communities all in my domain to repair their roads as you saw them when I went to supervise them.
“This coming week Saturday, Ezhiba and Awogenshen communities will rehabilitate their roads and I will also be there to supervise them to ensure that the right things are done for the benefit of all.
“The road rehabilitation is to reduce the hardship the people face when plying the roads as well as fight poverty, boost socio-economic activities and will reduce transport fares charged by Okada riders to the community among other benefits,” he said.
Nangba, who is the former Secretary of Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Council, however appealed to the state government to assist the community by constructing the roads and culverts in order to open up the area.
“I appeal to the state government to assist us by constructing culverts at Alashe, Ezhiba, Angwan Sabo, Azikili, Awogenshen to link Wakama district with Evah/Washo, Ogba Districts and Akwanga/Keffi/Abuja express road,” he urged.
He also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state government to assist the people of the area who have been affected by ecological problems.
Besides, the traditional ruler urged Nigerians to support government at all levels to enable them deliver more dividends of democracy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that youths from the district were seen sand filling potholes along the affected roads during the road rehabilitation. (NAN)

Lapai (Niger), Dec. 21, 2017 (NAN) The Student Union Government (SUG) of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has called on Niger Government to rehabilitate the Paiko-Lapai road to facilitate easy movement of students as the new academic session begins.
The SUG President, Mr Abubakar Mahmud, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lapai on Thursday.
Mahmud said that the road was in a deplorable state and adversely affecting socio-economic activities in the area.
According to him, if the road is in good condition, the journey from Paiko to Lapai will not take more than 25 minutes.
He lamented that the deplorable state of the road had made it a journey of one hour, adding that transporters capitalised on the bad state of the road to charge high fares from passengers.
The student leader further blamed the incessant armed robbery attacks on students plying the road to its bad state, stressing that when the road is repaired it will also reduce the number of accidents.
“My predecessors had solicited government’s intervention ‎on the rehabilitation of the road but up till now no meaningful thing has been done,” he said.
He said the poor state of the road was particularly worrying in view of the fact that both students and lecturers shuttle the road from Minna on daily‎ basis for their academic activities.
The SUG president also urged the university management to repair the road from the university’s second gate to Lapai to ensure the security and comfort of students.
“The road from the second gate that leads to town has been ‎abandoned by the management, they should understand that 80 per cent of the students use that road because they live off campus,” Mahmud said. (NAN)‎

Agency spends N200 million on road maintenance in Niger

Minna, Feb. 20, 2017 (NAN) The Niger State Roads Maintenance Agency (NIGROMA), says it spent N500 million to maintain the state’s roads in 2016.

Alhaji Umar Sani, its Managing Director, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Minna, that the agency had already spent N200 million on that activity this year.

He said that some of the repairs were carried out on federal roads.

“Some of the roads into which we sank money are federal roads, but we had to attend to them so as to help our people because their comfort is very paramount to us,” he said.

He particularly identified some specific areas along the Suleija – Minna road as deserving special attention

“Sometimes, heavy trucks loaded with petroleum products, get stuck and remain there for days; articulated vehicles loaded with yam tubers suffer the same fate. So, you see, we cannot close our eyes to these sufferings,” he said.

He said that rehabilitating the road was further necessitated by the presence of an NNPC Depot with heavy trucks always finding it difficult to maneuver through the bad spots.

Umar said that government had also been under pressure by motorists, road transport workers, petroleum tanker drivers and oil workers over the poor state of the roads.

He said that the agency had repaired 70 per cent of the bad portions on Minna township roads, and promised to maintain the tempo to rid the capital city of such sights. (NAN)

2 killed, 148 vehicles impounded during Salah in Lagos – FRSC

Lagos, Sept. 15, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Thursday said two persons lost their lives in seven road crashes during the Salah holiday in Lagos.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, FRSC’s Lagos Sector Commander, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the crashes were caused by excessive speed, alcohol violation, and dangerous driving.

According to him, the crashes involved 49 persons, with two fatalities and two were serious, while four were minor.

NAN reports that the FRSC in Lagos had embarked on a Salah Special Patrol from Sept. 8 to Sept. 13.

Omeje said: “One of the accidents occurred at Agege, involving four persons in which one person was killed and two were injured as a result of alcohol violation.

“It involved a yellow-painted commercial bus with license number plate EPE-986-XL.

“Another happened on Saturday on the Ibeku-Lekki long bridge involving three persons; two people were injured while one live was lost. It involved two trucks and one private vehicle.’’

He also said the command recorded a lone accident involving two persons, in which one died and the other injured.

The sector commander added that 593 motorists were apprehended for 660 traffic offences.

“One hundred and forty-eight vehicles were impounded while 17 motorists were convicted by the mobile court,’’ he said.

On his part, Mr Chris Olakpe, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, told NAN that the agency did not record any obstruction in the Lagos Metropolis during the celebration. (NAN)

LG reconstructs federal road to curb accident – Chairman

Potiskum (Yobe), Sept. 15, 2016 (NAN) The Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe has reconstructed shoulders on the Potiskum-Kano Federal Highway to curb accidents on the road.

The chairman of the council, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, who conducted newsmen round the road on Thursday, said “the repairs became imperative because of the increasing accidents on the very busy road.

“Although this is a federal highway, we have to work it to save the lives of our people and other road users.’’

Mohammed also said that the council was exploring available sources of revenue, which were hitherto neglected, to generate funds.

“Township roads, drainages and healthcare constitute the basic challenge to the communities in the local government area.

“The council has constructed drainages within the central market and the livestock market to enhance trading in the markets.

“The council has purchased three mass transit vehicles and official cars for principal officers of the council for revenue drive and to enhance productivity,’’ he said.

Mohammed said the council had provided drugs, consumables and a generator for the Potiskum maternity clinic. (NAN)
