Assault: NUJ demands sack of pension officials, redeployment of Nasarawa NSCDC Commandant

Lafia, Dec. 17, 2018 (NAN) The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for the immediate sack of officials of the State Pension Bureau over their involvement in the assault of two of its members.
The union made the demand on Monday in Lafia during a peaceful protest to the state pension bureau and command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the journalists were brutalised on Dec. 14 by personnel of NSCDC attached to the Pension Bureau office.
The journalists were attacked following their attempt to take photograph of the names of pensioners delisted.
The victims were Messrs Rabiu Omaku of Universal Reporters Online and Gambo Ahmed of Peoples Daily Newspaper.
Reading the demands of the union in all the places visited, Mr Dogo Shamma, the state NUJ Chairman, said the union condemned the attack on its members.
He also gave the state government 24 hours to sack Mr Abdullahi Oseze, the Director-General of the bureau and two others for their roles in the attack.
“We call for the immediate sack of the DG; Sabo Alaska, Director of Finance and Account; Abdullahi Dawaya, Public Relation Officer within 24 hours.
“We also call on the National Headquarters of NSCDC to redeploy the Nasarawa State Commandant, Mr Mohammad Mahmud-Fari, for failing to take action when the matter was formally reported him,” he said.
Similarly, Mr Chris Isiguzo, the National President of NUJ, represented by Mr Wilson Bako, the Vice President Zone-D, condemned the attack and declared total support to the protest.
Isiguzo said that if the authorities concerned fail to comply with their demands, the union would take over the struggle because the attack is a national tragedy.
NAN also reports that the union members, who carried placards with different inscriptions, were denied access to the two offices by armed personnel of NSCDC. (NAN)

Yola, Feb. 6, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa said on Tuesday that the State Government would not sack teachers on the basis of incompetence.
Bindow made this known at the 2018 Teachers Prayer Day under the banner of Solemn Assembly organised by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Adamawa State Wing in Yola.
The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Mr Julius Kadala, however said the government would train and re-train teachers with glaring deficiencies.
He noted that the teachers in public schools in the state were more qualified than those in private schools.
Bindow underscored the need for supervision and evaluation in private schools than in public schools in the state.
He assured the teachers of improved welfare, saying the state government is aware of all their demands.
While commending the NUT leadership for its understanding and cordial working relationship with the government, he assured them that the issue of non-payment of teachers’ salaries has gone forever.
Mr Rodney Nathan, the State NUT Chairman, commended the governor for fulfilling his promise regarding the payment of all teachers’ outstanding salaries.
However, Nathan urged the government to prioritise the implementation of the promotion of teachers serving in the state.
He appealed to his members to reciprocate government’s gesture through commitment and dedication to service.
According to him, the issue of salaries have been settled and on our part, we must do what we have been employed to do.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Solemn Assembly is an annual event marked by NUT across the federation and the high-points include prayers for success in the previous year as well as for the success of the teachers in the New Year.
NAN further reports that prayers were offered by both Christian and Muslim clerics, with readings from both the Bible and the Qur’an. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 9, 2018 (NAN) A messenger, Malam Abubakar Shu’aibu, 45, of Government Secondary School, Aminu Marmara, Sabongari Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday slumped into coma shortly after receiving his sack letter.
A credible witness confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the area on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.
The source said the incident happened Tuesday morning shortly after the affected person received his sack letter.
He said that the messenger had served the state for about 11 years.
“We reported to work this morning and Abubakar Shu’aibu was invited to Zonal Education Office; on reaching there, they served him with a sack letter.
“When he returned to the school, he showed us the letter and we all advised him to see it as an act of God Almighty as nothing happens to a person without the consent of God.
“He also admitted that that’s what God had destined for him, but all of a sudden, the man collapsed and went into coma instantly.
“We acted very fast by giving him a first aid. We took him up and lie him down on the floor, fanning him continuously and he gradually regained his consciousness,’’ he said.
The source added that teachers present at the scene of the incident converged and took a decision to mobilise something from their salary to empower him economically.
The source also said that the teachers begged the school principal, Malam Sa’idu Liman-Umar, to consider employing the sacked messenger as a temporary worker to cushion the effect for the meantime.
“The principal agreed to render possible assistance as the case may be,’’ said the source.
Officials in the Zonal Education Office in Zaria declined comment, saying that they were not directed to speak to the press.
Also the state Ministry of Education and the state Government is yet to react to the development.
NAN recalls that Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i had directed that all messengers, cleaners and drivers who spent 10 years in service without obtaining at least a Diploma or NCE should be sacked. (NAN)
