Ogbemudia Stadium has no comparison in Nigeria, Sen. Ogba says

Benin, March 16, 2020 (NAN) Obinna Ogba, the Chairman of Senate’s Committee on Youths and Sports Development, on Monday said the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin has none comparable to it in the country presently.

Ogba gave the assessment shortly after he was conducted round several of the facilities put in place for the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged “Edo 2020’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ogba was conducted round the facilities by Philip Shaibu, the Edo deputy governor, who is also Chairman of the festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC).

“I am highly impressed with what I have seen so far. In fact, since I have been visiting stadiums, I have not seen this type before in the country.

“I don’t have much to say rather than to thank Gov. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Edo have really written their name in gold.

“By the time this stadium is open to the public and the youths see what their governor has done with tax-payers money, they will never forget him.

“At all the facilities we have visited, they have done very well, particularly what they are doing at the University of Benin. The whole hostel is wearing a new look.

“And where they have some job to do, the deputy governor has charged them to complete the work within 24 hours.

“I have charged the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development to take all the things we have seen here to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja,’’ he said.

Ogba pointed out that Edo was ready for the 20th NSF. “They are ready. We can all see that nothing is holding them. We can see that all the needed facilities are on ground.’’

Also speaking, Shaibu assured that the state was ready to receive over 11,000 athletes and officials for the festival.

“We only pray to have a better climate, to enable us showcase all the facilities we have on ground.

“Also, beyond the facilities, we have some logistics ready, especially in the area of the health issues,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the facilities inspected by Ogba include the Games Village at University of Benin, the basketball court at Emotan College and the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.(NAN)

Edo 2020: MOC, LOC to inspect facilities, venues

Abuja, Feb. 27, 2020 (NAN) The Main Organising Committee (MOC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged “Edo 2020’’ will on Friday jointly inspect facilities for the Festival.

Blessing Lere-Adams, the Chairman of MOC’s Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

She said the joint inspection, being the final one, would be all-encompassing.

“Facilities to be inspected include sports venues, hostel accommodation, medical centres and others that would ensure a successful Festival.’’

Lere-Adams said both the Federal Government and Edo Government have intensified their synergy to ensure a world-class Festival.

She said the Edo government was leaving no stone unturned in ensuring state-of-the-art modern sports facilities were put in place for the Festival.

“It’s been authenticated that, as at today, all facilities are 95 per cent completed. Edo is highly commended for this milestone commitment and that is a testimony to the expected success of the festival.

“The FG, on the other hand, had been working round the clock to plug any loose end in all facets of the festival.

“Of course, we are all aware that the MOC Chairman, who is the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, Gabriel Aduda, alongside the Minister, Sunday Dare, have been on their toes in this regard,” Lere-Adams said.

She disclosed that, as part of preparations for the Festival, several Joint Technical Meetings, involving all state Directors of Sports, the ministry’s Zonal Coordinators, sport icons and stakeholders, had been held.

Lere-Adams, who is the ministry’s Director of Press, said the Festival’s Games Village which would host about 11,500 athletes is scheduled to open from March 20 and close on April 2.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 20th NSF will hold from March 22 to April 1 in the newly-renovated Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and 16 other venues in Benin.(NAN)

Ogbemudia Stadium reconstruction hasn’t affected Edo athletes’ training for NYG, Commission official says

Benin, Sept. 5, 2019 (NAN) Ongoing reconstruction works at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin have not stopped coaches from training athletes for the National Youth Games (NYG), an Edo Sports Commission official has said.

Godwin Dudu-Orumen, who is the commission’s Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Benin that training of athletes had been difficult since the stadium came under
reconstruction.

“We’ve been working quite hard. I have had sessions with coaches and with the commission’s Deputy Director of Technical and we let them know that not training at the stadium should not be an excuse.

“And with the kind approval of the Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, we got three buses to take athletes to University of Benin Sports Complex for training.

“Facilities at the university sports complex are also modern ones which they can train with. We are looking at their timing, we are looking at their form and we monitor them daily to see what they are doing over there.

“I am sure that by the time the Games commence, we will be ready to show to the rest of our opponents at the NYG what stuff we are made of.

“So, not training at the Ogbemudia Stadium should not be a reason for failure because, all things been equal, training does not have to be at the Ogbemudia Stadium. There are other grounds for training which we made available to them,’’ he said.

The Dudu-Orumen urged all the athletes to abide by their coaches’ instructions and remain united as a team during and after the competition.

NAN reports that the NYG, which is now in its fifth edition, will hold in Ilorin from Saturday to Sept. 17.(NAN)

Ogbemudia Stadium reconstruction work will be completed before 2020 NSF, contractor assures

Benin, April 9, 2019 (NAN) Olanrewaju Adeleke, a reconstruction official, on Tuesday in Benin assured that ongoing reconstruction work at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium would be completed ahead of the 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF).

Adeleke, who is the Project Manager at the stadium reconstruction site, gave the assurance after conducting the Edo Acting Governor, Philip Shaibu, round the stadium.

“We expect that we will deliver the work 100 per cent completed between now and December.

“This is because we want to get the facilities ready far ahead of the 2020 NSF to be hosted in Benin,’’ he said.

The official pointed out that nothing, including the weather, was going to be a hindrance to reconstruction activities.

“Even the rain is no longer a problem. The rain will rather naturally help to water the grass. We have finished with activities that would have been disturbed by rain.

“We are going to meet up with our target, as the stadium’s main bowl will be ready by June, the swimming pool area in August, and the other components will be completed by December,” he said.

In his reaction, Shaibu expressed satisfaction with the level of work done so far at the stadium and commended the quality of work.

He said the quality of work done so far would make the stadium, when completed, compete with the best stadiums in the world.(NAN)
