Sandamu LGC plants 1.11m trees in 6 years

Sandamu (Katsina State), Nov. 1, 2019 (NAN) Sandamu Local Government Council of Katsina State says it has planted more than 1.11 million of assorted trees to promote environmental conservation in the area.
Alhaji Sada Yahaya, the Council Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sandamu on Friday.
He said the mass tree planting drive was achieved through the EU and Oxfam sponsored improving the Fuel Wood Balance (FUWOBA) project.
Yahaya said the project was being implemented in the seven participating local government areas under the lot two segment of the project.
He said the feat was recorded between 2014 and 2019 when the project was first implemented.
The director added that assorted trees have being planted across the 11 wards in the area.
Yahaya said that the trees planted include Moringa, Eucaliptus, Neem, Mahogany, Zizipus and other related economic trees.
He said the aim of the project was to prevent desertification, environmental degradation and reduce the instances of indiscriminate falling of trees.
Yahaya said the trees were planted and raised by 3,200 farmers in the area who were trained by FUWOBA on modern techniques of raising seedlings and planting of the trees.
He said the project had established no fewer than 850 farmers groups in the area who were provided with agricultural inputs to promote agriculture.
He said the population of the farmers is 60 per cent male and 40 female, adding that three hectares of land has being earmarked for the cultivation of an orchard for assorted trees.
NAN reports that the FUWOBA projects targets planting of 7.7 million of assorted trees across the seven participating local government areas in the state.
NAN also reports that the seven participating local government areas under the lot two FUWOBA project are Daura, Sandamu, Baure, Ma’iadua, Mashi, Dutsi and Zango. (NAN)

Polio: Sandamu LGC immunises 49,171 children

Sandamu (Katsina State), Oct. 17, 2018 (NAN) The Sandamu Local Government Council in Kastina State has immunised no fewer than 49,171 children against polio during the just concluded second round of the Outbreak Response Immunisation in the area.

The Council’s Director of Health, Hajiya Sakina Zango, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sandamu on Wednesday.
Zango said the council received 52,440 vaccines out of which 52,260 were used in the exercise, resulting in 100 per cent coverage across the 11 electoral wards in the area.
She added that 85 house-to-house teams, 25 special teams and 25 fixed posts were effectively engaged and maximally utilised during the exercise, stressing that no single case of rejection was reported.
She commended all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community and religious leaders as well as the state government for the sustenance of both polio and routine immunisation in the area.
The director said that parents also demonstrated unprecedented cooperation by availing their children for the immunisation, adding “we would jealously guard and maintain this feat”.
NAN recalls that 49,218 children were earlier immunised in the area in the first round of the immunisation conducted in September.
In a related development Malam Tasiu Umar, the Council’s Mosquito Nets Logistics Officer, said they had commenced the distribution of 110,900 insecticidal mosquito nets in the area.
He said 43 distribution points are being utilised, adding that additional 3,000 nets to cover those absent during the registration of eligible beneficiaries have been received and would be distributed to such people.
Umar cautioned the beneficiaries against diversion of the nets and warned the ad hoc staff against any act of sabotage.
“We have formed a formidable monitoring team which goes round every nook and cranny of the distribution points to ensure that the exercise is hitch free,” she said.
NAN also recalls that Gov. Aminu Masari recently flagged off the distribution of five million insecticidal mosquito nets across the 34 local government areas of the state to combat malaria. (NAN)

Sandamu (Katsina State), April 26, 2017 (NAN) The Sandamu Local Council of Katsina State says it will immunise 52,000 children in the ongoing exercise in the area.

Hajiya Sakina Zango, the council’s Director of Primary Health Care (PHC), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sandamu on Monday.

She said the council has taken delivery of enough vaccines from the state primary health care agency, and engaged 89 trained vaccinators and 11 focal persons.

Zango said the four-day exercise would be conducted across the 11 electoral wards in the area, stressing that “our vaccinators will go house to house and school to school for a wider and effective coverage’’.

“The exercise kick started on the 23rd of this month and it would end by next Tuesday 27th of this month,” she said.

She said the council has increased Routine Immunisation Centeres (RIC) from seven to 10.

However, the director said “we conduct immunisation against measles, meningitis and other child killer diseases in those centres’’.

She said the area has achieved 100 per cent compliance on immunisation due the enlightenment campaign through radio, traditional and religious leaders.

Alhaji Sale Isa, the Sole Administrator of the council, commended the people of the area for their cooperation and understanding which led to the success of the exercise.

He called on parents to sustain the tempo, pledging the council’s resolve to continue to support immunisation campaigns to promote healthy and productive living among residents.

Isa disclosed that one case of meningitis was recorded at Jama’ar Chiroma village, but the victim survived it. (NAN)
