Ibadan, Dec. 26, 2019 (NAN) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the sultan of Sokoto, has enjoined muslims to be peaceful and refused to be provoked to take up arms to fight over any issue or comment made by anybody in the country. 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar III made the appeal at the opening ceremony of the 108th edition of Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) at IVC permanent site in Ogun State.

The event was organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) B Zone.

The Sultan who spoke on Islamic law and the Nigerian constitution, said: “We must not take up arm over any issue or anybody.

“We must never try to fight, we must not enforce our rights on anything. But we as a leader, all of us as leaders, we will look at ways of getting our rights from the government. 

“So never be provoked; don’t let any comment or any report from anywhere provoke you into taking up arms to fight.

“Why because that is what they want us to do to destabilise Nigeria. We will not destabilise Nigeria as muslims. We will walk as Islamic orders us to do.

“And In-shaa Allah we will build a better Nigeria where muslims are allowed to wear hijab anywhere and at any time.”

Abubakar III emphasised the need for muslims to remain calm over any issue concerning their faith.

“Like I said ,Almighty Allah will protect His religion, He will protect the Qur’an, His book.

“We will do our own part by remaining peaceful, by always abiding by the laws of our land.

“We are always talking to our leaders, especially the political leaders, on what should be done and what ought not to be done,” the Sultan said. 

On his part, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, urged muslims to ensure that their wards get education. 

The first class traditional ruler said this would reduce illiteracy, poverty and social vices.

He further admonished muslims on peace and unity to address various challenges facing them.

Sanusi II urged them to recognise, identify and address the internal problems challenging them which had led to increased poverty and social vices. 

Also, Mr Rauf Olaniyan, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, enjoined those present at the event to take advantage of government initiative called ‘Better Education Service Delivery for All’ (BESDA) to reduce the number of out-of-school children in their communities.

“Let us struggle to get 10 pupils from your neighbourhood, town and village back to classroom. 

“There is a programme now called BESDA, the federal government is spending so much on it, this is the best time to benefit because of tomorrow. 

“Where we are today is because we failed to harness the opportunity of yesterday. 

“There are opportunities to be taken today so that we can get the benefit of tomorrow,” Olaniyan said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Mr Qaasim Odedeji, the Coordinator MSSN B Zone, said the IVC programme was organised by past generations of the leadership of MSSN to confront the evil associated with environmental influence of relating with non-Muslims ,especially during their festivities. 

He said the festivities were intentionally designed to coincide with major school holidays. 

“The programme has always given muslim students the opportunity of occupying themselves with the activities that would improve their knowledge of Islam and their faith in Allah,” Odedeji said.

He endorsed the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria on the need to improve the status of Shariah through amendment of the relevant sections of the federal constitution. 

“The call for resignation of Chief Justice of Nigeria is laughable, unreasonable and unwarranted and a calculated attempt to intimidate CJN.

“The Nigerian legal system which the CJN presides over is not limited to Nigerian legislations, it also contains provisions of Islamic personal law,” he said.

Abuja, June 24, 2019 (NAN) The Global Centre for Conscious Living Against Corruption (GLOCCOLAC), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has appealed to the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, to submit to due process of law and Kano State anti-graft agency.
The Director-General of the organisation, Dr Nwambu Gabriel, made the call at a sensitisation workshop with the theme: `A Review on Anti-Corruption War in Nigeria’, on Monday in Abuja.
He also urged the first class traditional ruler and the emirate council to stop obstructing the investigation in the interest of transparency, accountability, justice and fair play.
Gabriel said the advice was sequel to the Emir’s response on the query issued him by the Kano State Government on alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion of Kano Emirate Council’s funds.
He said that the centre had been observing with keen interest the investigation of the emirate council over the allegation of misappropriation against the traditional ruler.
“Based on this, the state government issued the Emir a query to respond to the allegation, which he did on `A publication of This Day Newspaper titled `Sanusi Tackles Kano Anti-graft Agency over Fraud Allegations’.
“This provided the Emir’s position on the matter which raised our curiosity to organise a press conference,’’ he explained.
Gabriel stated that the centre had scrutinised the three document reports submitted by the Kano State anti-graft Agency and came up with some submissions.
“The response of the Emir that he inherited N1.9 billion as against the claims of the anti-corruption Commission was not quite satisfactory.
“The commission said its investigation was on alleged misappropriation and questionable expenditures and not on funds left behind by late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, therefore the Emir is yet to discountenance the allegations.
“The claim that the Emir is not the Chief Accounting Officer of the Emirate and yet approves its expenditure further creates more suspicion on his role in the alleged misappropriation.
“The Emir also tried to justify the N1.4 billion spent on hotels and airline tickets as well as the N2.9 million for airtime in two years from the funds of the Emirate Council,’’ he said.
Gabriel noted that the funds were for the public belonging to the state that accommodates the larger percentage of people living below the poverty line in the country.
He added that findings by the centre on the issue of transfer of funds to companies not registered with Cooperate Affairs Commission was not addressed as the reply only stopped at the registration and not the alleged transfer.
He said the centre was also concerned and requires thorough investigation on the emir’s justification on a transfer of about N105 million into an individual’s account of the Emirate technical staff, which he said was meant for direct labour.
Gabriel said the centre also observed that the issue of CCTV Cameras was the claim of the petitioners as contained in the report but not the findings of the anti-corruption commission.
He said Sanusi was still silent on the claim of anti-corruption agency that one Rufa’i Buhari usually changed dollars to Naira on behalf of the Emir through Bureau de Change belonging to one Jazuli Sani, who was said to have died.
Gabriel stressed that following the present administration’s stance against corruption it was pertinent that the Emir, as an international financial officer, submits himself to due process of law and Kano anti-graft agency.
He further called on Gov. Abdullahi Gaduje to ensure proper funding of the commission as well as facilitate the commission’s financial autonomy to ensure maximum efficiency.
It would be recalled that the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission in its preliminary investigation report accused the Emir of spending Kano Emirate Council’s funds indiscriminately without regards to due process and the rule of law.
The report, dated May 31, was addressed to the Secretary to the Kano State Government, led to the query the monarch replied. (NAN)

Emir Sanusi’s claim on alleged N3.4bn fraud, misrepresentation of facts – Anti-graft agency

Kano, June 13, 2019 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has described the claim by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, that he was not the accounting officer of the Kano Emirate Council as a misrepresentation of facts.

This is contained in a preliminary report of the Commission on the investigation being carried out in respect of the alleged misappropriation of over N3.4 billion by the Kano Emirate Council between 2014 and 2017.

The report was signed by the commission’s Chairman, Mr Muhuyi Magaji, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday.

The report, with reference number PCAC/GEN/6/VOL.I, dated June 11, 2019, was addressed to the Secretary to the State Government.

Part of the report reads: “In furtherance to the Commission’s earlier communication No. PCAC/GEN/6/V.I, dated 31st May, 2019, on the above subject matter and the unfolding events, the Commission deemed it necessary to make some clarifications as follows:-

“It is imperative to state categorically that, the Commission’s investigation is on alleged misappropriation and questionable expenditures but not on the funds left behind by the Late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, and we still maintain our stance.

“In the cause of investigation we undertook an analysis of the main Account belonging to Kano Emirate Council and domicile at First Bank with Account No. 2005888452 starting from the era of the Late Emir to enable the Commission have an idea of how the money is being managed.”

According to the report, there were 783 activities bordering on withdrawals, transfers and placements from Jan. 2, 2013, to June 6, 2014, during the time of the late Emir.

“As from 2nd January 2013 to 13th April, 2017, the opening balance is N432,338,412.98. Total credit made in the account during this period was N6,784,146,335.73 while the total debit during the period under review is N7,209,035,163.09.”

However, it added that, “the closing balance as at April, 2017, is N7,449,585.62″.

It further revealed that on Feb. 13, 2014, and Feb. 26, 2014, payments were made to Philko Ltd, the company said to have undertook the construction of Ado Bayero Royal City via Inter Bank transfers of the sum of N776,159,519.50.

“There were transfers of N388,079,759.75, N338,079,759.75 and N50,000,000.00 made on Feb. 13, 2014, and Feb. 26, 2014, respectively; making the total quoted figures for Philko Ltd.”

The report also alleged that during the period, fixed deposit placements were made to the tune of N581,884,729.54 (placement and rollovers) while net withdrawals on some engagements both cash and withdrawal stood at N1,056,533,728.31.

“In summary, the total withdrawal made from the Account under the Late Emir was N2,414,577,977.35, subtracting this amount from total debit on the account which is N7,209,035,163.09.

“It is evidently clear that the current Emir is responsible for the expenditures to the total sum of N4,794,457,185.74 from the Emirate Council Account domicile in First Bank Plc,” it said.

Similarly, it alleged that all the expenditures made by the Emirate Council were either based on the approval or instructions of Emir Sanusi.

The commission attached copy of a payment voucher in respect of one of the withdrawals to buttress its claim, which read “Being payment to the above named in respect of making special prayers for peace as directed by H.H. Emir of Kano respectively“.

“Therefore, any claim that the Emir is not the accounting officer of the Kano Emirate Council is a deception and a misrepresentation of facts.

“Specifically, the reason of our recommendation for the suspension apart from obstruction of investigation which formed the basis, investigation further reveals that Rufa’i Buhari (Senior Accountant) usually made cash withdrawals directly from the account and change it to Dollars on behalf of the Emir.

“Sometimes direct transfers from the account are made to a Bureau De Change belonging to one Jazuli Sani who was said to have died.

“The Commission still maintain the allegation on unappropriated, seemingly personal expenditures, making the total sum of questionable expenditures uncovered by this investigation to the tune of N3,432,090,797.94 only,” the report emphasised. (NAN).

Query: Emir Sanusi replies Gov. Ganduje

Kano, June 8, 2019 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has replied to query issued to him by the Kano State Government over alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion.

The one-page reply with reference number KEC/CF/FIN/1/162, dated June 7, 2019, was signed by the Acting Secretary to the Kano Emirate Council, Alhaji Abba Yusuf.

The letter titled “Re-Report of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti–Corruption Commission”, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Kano, was addressed to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

According to the letter, at the time Muhammadu Sanusi was installed as the Emir of Kano, the exact amount in the accounts of the Emirate Council was N1,893,927.38.

The letter, however, explained that the Emir was not the Accounting Officer of the council but rather the Secretary of the Emirate Council.

The letter, therefore, appreciated the opportunity granted to the Emir to clear the air over the allegations as attached to the query.

NAN recalls that the Kano State Government had on June 6 queried the first class traditional ruler over alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion by the Emirate Council under his (Sanusi’s) leadership.

The Emir was given 48 hours within which to reply to the query to enable the state government to take appropriate action.

The development caused anxiety and tension in the state.

Kano youths commends Dangote, Fayemi for reconciling Kano leaders

Kano, June 8, 2019 (NAN) Some youths in Kano metropolis on Saturday commended business mogul Aliko Dangote and Ekiti State Gov. Kayode Fayemi for brokering peace between Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dangote and Fayemi intervened in the crisis between feuding parties on in Abuja.

Reactto the development, some of the youths who spoke with NAN on Saturday in Kano, expressed satisfaction and appreciation with the reconciliation.

According to some of them, the reconciliation is in the best interest of the state, the region and the country as a whole.‎

Mr Ali Sani told NAN that the amicable resolution of the differences by the two gentlemen  was a welcome development.‎

He stressed that embracing peace and understanding would surely facilitate great success in the development of the state and the Emirate.‎‎

Malam Musa Saleh, another youth, said the reconciliation provided much relief to many residents because the crisis was ‎new to them.

“Since the issue started we are not happy with it because the state is divided across‎ political lines,” he said.

Yet another youth, Ms Halima Sa’ad, told NAN that the situation was one of the few bad things that could happen to Kano if left without mediation.‎‎

‎She commended Dangote for wading into the matter and reconciling the two leaders. She then urged them to sheathe their swords in the best interest of the state.‎

‎On his part, Mr Bala Adamu, also commended Dangote and Fayemi for their efforts in bringing the two figures together again for peace to reign.

He then urged followers of both leaders to keep praying for peace, stability and progress of the state and country at large.‎

‎Mr Fidelis Ade also expressed his appreciation with the outcome of the mediation efforts, noting that it will go a long way to consolidate the relative peace enjoyed in the state.

‎NAN recalls that the State Government on Thursday issued a query to the first class monarch over alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion by the Emirate Council.

The state government also created four new Emirates from the ancient Kano Emirate, a move believed to be calculated at reducing the sphere and influence of the Emir of Kano.

The state police command had also Saturday morning banned all forms of assembly, procession, rallies and protest to prevent breach of peace arising from the tension generated by the crisis. (NAN)

Abuja, Nov. 7, 2018 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to produce a structured policy on ageing in order to address the problems of ageism.
Sanusi II made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sidelines of the first Africa Stakeholders Regional Conference on Ageing on Wednesday in Abuja.
Represented by Amb. Ahmed Umar, the first class traditional ruler said that having a structured policy in the system would be a plus in addressing challenges of ageing.
He underscored the need for a conscious effort to domesticate into the constitution, frameworks that would help older persons in Nigeria.
He also suggested that older persons should be innovative part of every national agenda, stressing that there is need for re-engagement of senior citizens into the system.
Sanusi II also recommended that traditional rulers should be engaged in order to educate people in the rural areas on the need for healthcare givers to be informed and educated on care of the elderly.
He noted that older persons were credible people that could be trained before and after retirement, especially public servants, on how to contribute to the society and that should be made a national policy.
He therefore advised the federal government and the National Assembly to adopt the outcome, recommendations from the Stakeholders Group Ageing conference into the constitution for the benefit of all.
The monarch said that retired older persons were still useful and had a lot to give back to the society, saying that to retire is not to be tired. (NAN)

Kano, Oct. 2, 2018 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to educate potential investors especially women on financial services offered in the capital market and other financial institutions.
This, he said, would protect prospective investors from exploitation and other people of dubious character.
He made the call while speaking at the World Investors Week (WIW) Stakeholder Forum held in Kano on Tuesday.
NAN reports that the Emir was represented by the Dan Majen Kano and District Head of Gwale, Alhaji Yahaya Inuwa Abbas.
He said the appeal was also necessary in order to enable them understand the various investment opportunities and financial services offered in the capital market and other financial institutions.
The monarch said there was need for SEC and Association for the Advancement of the Rights of Nigerian Stakeholders (AARNS) to educate people on the illegal activities of some people who promised unsuspecting individuals abnormal returns on investments.
According to him, the commission can organise Investors Fair with a view to ensuring effective sensitisation of prospective investors on range of financial services in the capital market and other financial institutions.
“Once you are financially educated and know what investment is nobody can deceive you because in financial market there are instruments which will give you fixed returns,’’ he said.
In his remarks, the Head, Market Development Department of SEC, Mr Bello Abdul, said the forum was aimed at sensitising potential investors on the importance of non-interest and commodity products investments.
“This is the second time the forum is being organised as it was first held in Lagos.
“The decision to hold this programme in Kano is borne out of the fact that a lot of commodities are being produced in the state while majority of the people are Muslims,” he said. (NAN)

Kano, Dec. 18, 2017 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for a law that would compel public officers and traditional rulers to undergo drug test in the country.
He made the call at the Senate Roundtable on drug abuse held in Kano on Monday.
NAN reports that the event is organised by the Senate in order to address drug abuse epidemic in the country.
He said the call was necessary in order to ensure that anybody was not allowed to hold political office and traditional leadership positions.
“I am ready to submit myself for the drug test.
“I suggest that ministers, governors and traditional rulers should go for drug test because when youths understand that they cannot be governors, ministers or senators if they are drug addicts, they will be into their senses.
“The country is facing a great danger because the fight against drug abuse has to be taken seriously if we are to succeed,’’ he said.
While calling for effective implementation of the laws against drug abuse in the country, the first class traditional ruler also urged the Senate to ensure proper funding of all agencies charged with the responsibility to enforce the laws.
“We are deceiving ourselves if we don’t believe that we are part of the problem,’’ Sanusi said.
Besides, the emir called for the establishment of modern rehabilitation centres for victims of drug abuse in the six geo-political zones of the country.
He said when established, the centres should be equipped with necessary facilities and personnel to enable them take care of the teeming numbers of victims of the drug abuse.
He said the measure was necessary in order to ensure that those addicts were rehabilitated and trained in various skills to enable them be reintegrated into the society.
He, however, called for adequate funding of the centres to enable them operate effectively and serve the purpose for which they are established. NAN)

Abuja, May 12, 2017 (NAN) Mr Timi Frank, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has appealed to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to handle with care, allegations leveled against the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi.

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, Frank also called on the State House of Assembly to scrutinise the allegations properly before taking any action.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Kano State House of Assembly announced that it had set up an eight-man committee to investigate the Emir.

The first class traditional ruler is being investigated on allegations bordering over alleged misconduct and misappropriation of funds belonging to the Kano Emirate Council.

Reacting to the development, Frank urged the governor to overlook some of the alleged excesses of Sanusi whom he described as “a new generation Emir’’.

He also appealed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, traditional leaders in the country, Northern Governors Forum and elders in the region to intervene and settle the matter amicably.

“I call on our traditional fathers to quickly intervene now before this controversy between the state government and the Kano Emirate degenerates.

“I appeal to our dear Gov. Ganduje and the state lawmakers not to exercise their full strength against the Malam Sanusi-led Emirate in Kano following perceived wrong doings.

“I believe, like other opinion leaders have said, there should be a way to amicably settle the differences,’’ Frank said.

He reminded the lawmakers and the governor not to forget how Sanusi spoke out the truth during the PDP-led administration which resulted to the enthronement of an APC-led government in the country.

The APC stalwart also called on the Federal Government not to keep mute on the matter, but to intervene to ensure peace and tranquility reign between the Kano State Government and the Emir.

He specifically begged the governor and other top state government functionaries not to promote moves that would lead to the dethronement of the Emir.

According to Frank, such action can become a bad precedence against traditional institutions in the state and the country at large. (NAN)

Kano, April 14, 2017 (NAN) The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has disowned social media accounts opened in his name.

Sanusi said in a statement that on Friday in Kano that he never authorised any person or organisation to open to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media account nor post any message on his behalf.

The traditional ruler spoke through his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Munir Sanusi.

He explained that this should put to rest series of calls and enquiries to the office of the Emir on some purported malicious and fake social media accounts in the name of the monarch.

Sanusi noted that the current development is coming after an earlier advertorial disclaiming a fake Facebook and Twitter accounts created in the name of his Highness.

He lamenting that the fraudsters have remained unrelenting in their nefarious acts.

“We have officially notified the administrators of the fake Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts requesting that the accounts be closed immediately in addition to detecting the identity of the culprits.

“It is important to reiterate that the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has persistently stood for the unity of the nation regardless of its diversity.

“He always emphasise the need for tolerance and respect for one another.”

Sanusi assured that his principles as a traditional ruler and religious leader would be meticulously safeguarded and warned the fraudsters to desist forthwith or face the consequences of their action. (NAN)
