Bundesliga: Late Harit goal completes Schalke comeback win at Augsburg

Berlin, Nov. 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Schalke 04’s Amine Harit scored an 82nd-minute winner as his team twice came from a goal down to beat hosts Augsburg 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Schalke have now moved level on points with fourth-placed Bayern Munich.

The 22-year-old Moroccan netted his fifth goal of the campaign with a fine solo effort as Schalke moved up to sixth place on 18 points, four behind leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Augsburg managed to score twice in the first half, once with captain Daniel Baier to take the lead in the 38th minute and another with Stephan Lichtsteiner’s glancing header for an own goal on the stroke of halftime.

Alfred Finnbogason’s well taken penalty, awarded for a handball, put the hosts again in front on the hour.

However, Schalke once more responded with Ozan Kabak’s darting header from a Daniel Caligiuri free kick 11 minutes later before Harit snatched the late winner.

Borussia Moenchengladbach lead the standings with 22 points after their 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg lifted them to second place on 19, leaving Bayern a point behind after slumping to a 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Berlin, Aug. 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Schalke 04 president Clemens Toennies has stepped down as club boss for a period of three months following a board hearing into controversial comments he made last week triggering a racism row.

Toennies, a billionaire owner of a meat processing company, had told a conference last week that instead of increasing taxes to protect the environment there should be more power stations built in Africa.

“Then the Africans would stop cutting down trees and produce babies when it is dark,” Toennies said in his speech in Paderborn.

His comments instantly triggered a wave of angry reactions including from several former Schalke players.

And there were calls for his immediate resignation from his post at the Bundesliga club that had one of the largest and most loyal fan base in Germany.

“I am a bit speechless,” said Ghanaian-born former Germany and Schalke player Gerald Asamoah. “His comments surprised me, shocked me and injured me. He is insulting me and everyone else involved”.

Toennies quickly issued a public apology saying his comments were wrong and inappropriate but said he stood fully behind the club’s fight against racism, discrimination and exclusion.

Schalke’s honorary board met late on Tuesday with Toennies and following a four-hour discussion that ran into the night rejected the claims of racism but said he had violated the club’s anti-discrimination rules.

“He accepted this violation and again expressed his regret. This was why Clemens Toennies announced that he would step down from chair of the board for a period of three months,” the club said in a statement.

Dortmund (Germany), April 27, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Borussia Dortmund suffered a severe setback in the Bundesliga title race as their shock 2-4 home loss to lowly Schalke 04 in the Ruhr Valley derby on Saturday left them a point behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Dortmund, who had two players sent off, are on 69 points, with three games left to play, with Bayern, who face Nuremberg on Sunday, on 70.

The Bavarians will open up a four-point lead with a win on Sunday, leaving Dortmund hoping that Bayern might slip up twice in the remaining three games.

Schalke are now all but certain of staying up, having moved up to 30 points in 15th place, nine ahead of the relegation playoff spot occupied by VfB Stuttgart, in action against Borussia Moenchengladbach later on Saturday.

Daniel Caligiuri’s 18th-minute penalty drew the visitors level after Mario Goetze’s close-range header from a superb Jadon Sancho assist had put Dortmund in front in the 14th.

Salif Sane’s powerful header from a Caligiuri corner in the 28th made it 2-1 for Schalke, who looked nothing like the team that have been battling to avoid relegation much of this season.

Disciplined at the back and waiting for their chances on the break, Schalke were able to successfully soak up attack after attack from Dortmund.

The home team had more than 75 per cent of possession in the first half, but clearly lacked the final pass.

Things took a turn for the worse after the break with Dortmund captain Marco Reus sent off on the hour with a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Suat Serdar.

Caligiuri curled the resulting free kick into the top corner before Dortmund were reduced to nine men with Marius Wolf getting his marching orders in the 65th for another rough challenge on Serdar.

Dortmund gave it all they had and Axel Witsel cut the deficit in the 85th minute.

But Breel Embolo netted Schalke’s fourth goal a minute later to seal a memorable derby win in what has otherwise been a disappointing season for last year’s league runners-up.

RB Leipzig made sure of their top-four finish and a return to the Champions League by beating Freiburg 2-1 to remain in third place on 64, 10 ahead of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. (Reuters/NAN)

Schalke sack coach Tedesco after Manchester City mauling

Berlin, March 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Schalke 04 fired coach Domenico Tedesco two days after they lost 7-0 to Manchester City in the Champions League last 16 second leg, the German club said on Thursday.

The mauling in Manchester, completing a 10-2 aggregate loss, was the fifth consecutive defeat for a side lying fifth-bottom of the Bundesliga.

“Head coach Domenico Tedesco and assistant coach Peter Perchtold have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect,” Schalke said in a statement.

Interim coach Huub Stevens will take charge of the team for Saturday’s league game against RB Leipzig.

“He (Tedesco) developed the side very well last season that ended with us finishing runners-up,” sporting director Jochen Schneider said.

“However, we can’t fail to recognise that the development this season has been negative.” (Reuters/NAN)

Harvest of goals as Manchester City demolish Schalke 04 for place in Champions League quarter-finals

Manchester (UK), March 12, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Rampant Manchester City demolished a woeful Schalke 04 7-0 to complete a 10-2 aggregate win and become the third English side into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Manchester City’s record home win in Europe did not look likely after a quiet opening 35 minutes.

But once Sergio Aguero began the rout from the penalty kick spot it became embarrassingly easy as Manchester City reached the last eight for the third time in four years.

Aguero doubled Manchester City’s lead three minutes later and the impressive Leroy Sane made it 3-0 before halftime.

Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva finished off flowing moves after the break and youngster Phil Foden bagged his first European goal before Gabriel Jesus made it seven.

Manchester City, who trailed 2-1 in the away leg before turning it around late on, join Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals.
