Church sponsors 16 to Turkey for varsity education

Abuja, Feb. 21, 2020 (NAN) Sixteen beneficiaries of scholarships by a faith-based organisation, the Omega Power Ministry (OPM), have departed the country for Turkey to continue their university education.

Founder and General Overseer of OPM, Chibuzor Chinyere, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

He said the students, who departed the country on Thursday night, came from less privileged families.

According to him, the beneficiaries have been enrolled with full scholarship; with feeding and accommodation, to study various degree courses in Kirklareli University in Turkey for a duration of four and five years.

“By the grace of God, I have been sending children abroad to study in the last 10 years; they go to Canada, Cyprus, U.S., South Africa and UK. But this time we sent them to Turkey.

“We have not sent them in bulk before, but now, we conducted exam for some students in Port Harcourt, Rivers and in Anambra, and some of them scaled through. So, we decided to sponsor their education.

“Those involved are those that finished secondary school, but have stayed at home for over five years because their parents had no money to send them to University.

“We are doing this because of the potential in these children, which will not only benefit the family but the entire nation. So, we cannot allow these potentials to be wasted.

“It was on this basis that we decided to select such people with good result that have finished secondary school, but cannot further to University level,” Chinyere said.

According to him, the examination was conducted for over 5,000 secondary school graduates to prove that the results they have belong to them.

He explained that about 200 people have so far benefited from the scholarship since the inception of the church and that they were funded by the tithes and offerings from church members.

“We took the best from less privileged families and disqualified those that also did well but from rich families.

“So, after the exam we made enquiries about every person that wrote the exam to know their background and we dropped those that their parents are well to do,” he said.

Apart from the scholarships, OPM also established 14 free nursery and primary schools, two free specialist hospitals and a skill acquisition centre that had trained over 10,000 less privileged people. (NAN)

Minna, Feb. 27, 2017  (NAN) The Niger State Government spent N112.5 million on scholarships to its students in 2016, according to Alhaji Mohammed Yahaya, Executive Secretary, Niger Scholarship Board.

Yahaya told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday, that the gesture was limited to students in tertiary institutions.

He promised that government would continue to deploy its limited resources to supporting indigent students toward academic excellence.

“We have told the students to take their studies seriously because government is committed to their welfare and shall be consistent in providing this support,” Yahaya said.

The official appealed to parents to complement government’s efforts by monitoring the conduct of their children.

“Parents must support government; together, we shall prepare the students to be assets to the society.

“We look up to this young ones for a better Nigeria in future, and shall not spare anything toward making them realise their potential,” he said. (NAN)

Jos, Feb. 27, 2017(NAN) A Non Government Organisation (NGO), Girls Education Mission International (GEM), has offered scholarships and entrepreneurial training  to 1,000 girls in Plateau.

Mrs. Keturah Shammah, the Executive Director of GEM, who spoke on the gesture, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Jos, said that the organisation worked with 30 schools to arrive at the beneficiaries.

She said that the group also reached out to community leaders toward ensuring that only deserving persons were enrolled into its training programme.

Shammah explained that GEM started its operation in Kaduna in 2007, as an intervention body reaching out to girls, who had been deprived of education and training opportunities.

“We tried to build their capacities; we offered them relevant knowledge towards becoming women of integrity,” she said.

Gem listed main activities of the group to include mentoring, educational and economic empowerment, capacity building and entrepreneurial skills training.

She said that the group was already partnering with technological experts to launch a technology initiative for girls aged 10-18, and for young women aged 18-35.

“The focus here is to help those groups to know more about modern technology so that they can be further empowered to compete for available opportunities,” she said.
