NAFDAC seals bakery in Abuja for filthy production environment

Abuja, Aug. 13, 2018 (NAN) The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it has sealed Lovers Bakery at Jikwoyi, Abuja, for filthy and unhealthy production environment.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Adeyeye said that the bakery, located in a commercial area of Jikwoyi Phase 1, was sealed following a tip off by consumers and an investigation at the bakery.
She explained that the bakery was very untidy and had a toilet inside the production area as well as Pets (dogs) were seen roaming about in and out of the baking area.
She said that the personnel met at the bakery were not properly dressed and it was obvious that the production staff live in the baking premises.
According to her, the cloak room was converted to a living quarter for bakery staff while the oven is made of firewood which makes the whole environment very untidy at the time of visit.
She said that when this was discovered by the NAFDAC team, the bakery was sealed off and placed on hold.
“A second visit was made to the bakery on the July 23, 2018, following information that activities were still going on in the bakery.
“The inspectors observed that there was evidence to show that the HOLD label on the facility had been tampered with, as some of the baking pans containing dough during the initial visit had been taken away.
“And it was obvious they gained access by jumping the fence.
“The manager claimed the place was probably burgled without his knowledge because he travelled when the incidence occurred.
“Another HOLD label has now been placed on the bakery and administrative charge imposed on the company,” she explained.
The director-general renewed the commitment and determination of the agency to ensure people do not consume unwholesome food or drinks in accordance with its mandate. (NAN)

Dutse, July 18, 2018 (NAN) The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has locked up 22 patent medicine shops and sealed off four others in two local government areas of Jigawa.
The state Chairman of the council, Malam Muhammad Shehu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Dutse that the operators committed various offences.
Shehu said that the affected shops were locked up due to refusal to register with the council among other offences bordering on fake drugs.
He explained that the action was taken as the council commenced its annual patent medicine shops inspection across the state.
The chairman said that from July 9 till date, the council had inspected 38 patent medicine shops in Kafinhausa and Babura Local Government Areas.
“We commenced our annual inspection exercise on July 9 in Kafinhausa LGA where we inspected 21 shops and locked up 16 that have not registered with the council.
“Out of the 16 locked up shops, four were later sealed off,’’ he said.
The chairman further said that the council inspected 17 shops in Babura local government area on July 11, where 13 out the 17 shops were locked up due to similar reasons.
According to him, the council does only look at the registration aspect alone but also carry out checks whether drugs sold in those shops were approved ones, carried NAFDAC registration number, as well as production and expiry dates.
“We also ensure that they keep the shops under hygienic condition and strictly adhere to all the guidelines governing their operation,” Shehu added.
The chairman further warned that any sealed off shop that reopen and continue operation without clearance would be charged to court.
“There are three categories of sanctions for any defaulting shop; the first one is locking up, the second is sealing off and the third is taking owner of sealed off shop that open and continue with his business to court.
“Shop owners are warned to avoid opening and continuing with their businesses until they duly register with the council.
“And anyone caught will be charged to court,” Shehu warned.
He also warned them to desist from selling fake, adulterated and substandard drugs.
The chairman also assured that the inspection team would visit all patent medicine shops in the 27 local government areas of the state to ensure total compliance. (NAN)

Abuja, March 23, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has sealed a hospital belonging to a former Commissioner for Health in the state over alleged diversion of 533,000 dollars (about N163 million).

The Chairman of the commission, Mr Muhuyi Rimingado, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by telephone on Thursday in Abuja.

Rimingado said that the health facility, New Age Diabetic Clinic, located at Dorayi Babba in Kano, belonged to Dr Abubakar Yusuf, the former commissioner for health allegedly involved in the scholarship scam.

He said the amount was part of 1.5 million dollars (about N458 million) meant for the payment of scholarship grants to 139 students sponsored by the previous government to study at Al-Mansuora International University, Egypt.

He explained that the commission’s attention was drawn to the development following complaints of non-payment of the allowances by the students.

The chairman said that the allowances covered the 2012 to 2014 tuition and accommodation fees of the students.

Rimingado said that the subsequent seizure of 200,000 dollars (about N61 million) by authorities at the Cairo International Airport from a Nigerian bound for Kano was also directly linked to the ex-commissioner.

The chairman said that the suspect had confessed his connection to the seized $200,000.

“Yusuf said the money was meant to finance a company they created but could not provide the source of the fund and the reason for the attempt to smuggle it into the country,’’ the chairman said.

“In the course of investigation, one of the directors at the Ministry of Health confirmed that he served the former commissioner with the money sourced from the consultant to the students’ scholarship scheme,” Rimingado added.

He said the consultant collected 1.5 million dollars from the Kano Government for the scholarship scheme, but how the fund was disbursed remained suspicious.

The Chairman said: “This is an act punishable under sections 22, 23, 40 and 41 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended)”.

The law empowers the commission to seize any money or property suspected to have been acquired fraudulently or corruptly.

Such funds, assets or property belonging to suspects under investigation shall remain in the custody of the commission pending final court verdict or at the discretion of the anti-graft agency.

He assured the public of the commission’s commitment to ensure justice, equity and fairness to all and sundry in the discharge of its mandate.

NAN also recalls that the commission is investigating staff of the state Judiciary over alleged non-remittance of about N100 million revenue to government coffers.

The anti-graft agency is also investigating some workers of the state traffic control authority (KAROTA) over an alleged N50 million corruption case. (NAN)
