Community leader urges FG to address farmers/herders conflict

Nkwelle-Ezunaka (Anambra), Feb. 19, 2020 (NAN) Chief Chris Elumunoh, former Anambra President of Oha na Eze Ndigbo, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the conflicts between farmers and herdsmen in Anambra.

Elumunoh, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra on Wednesday.

He said that the activities of herdsmen in the country was worrisome and needed urgent measures from higher authourities.

“In our area here the North Senatorial District, the clash between farmers and herdsmen iss getting out of hands and we do not sleep with our two eyes closed on a daily basis,” he said.

Elumunoh said that the state government has been addressing the situation by setting up the cattle menace committee to address issues between the two groups.

“We need stronger measures from the Federal Government, because the issue is beyond state government and the Federal Government needs to complement their efforts,” he said.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari should help prevent the crisis from escalating beyond its present state.

Elumunoh urged Buhari to strengthen the conflict resolution mechanism to address the cross border movement of both cattle rustlers and armed herders in Anambra and other parts of the country.

He said that acts such as local migration routes, crops damage, livestock theft, among others are problems that trigger these disputes and needed to be addressed urgently.

Elumunoh said that the acts has instilled fears in the people who are mainly farmers, adding that it had contributed to the low farm produce in the area. (NAN)

Lafia, Dec. 16, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a Law for the Establishment of the state’s Hotel Licensing Board to regulate activities of hotels and boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House, announced the passage of the bill after Alhaji Tanko Tunga, the Majority Leader, moved the motion for the passage on Monday in Lafia.

Abdullahi said that the bill, if finally assented to by the governor, would regulate the activities of hotels across the state for development to thrive.

“This bill will also boost the security and the revenue base of the state if finally assented to by the executive governor.

“The bill is very important to the development of the state, hence the need for its passage,’’ he said.

Abdullahi directed the clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent.

Earlier, Tunga (APC – Awe North) while moving the motion for the bill, called on his colleagues to support it, considering its importance to societal development.

The Minority Leader, Mr Danladi Jatau (PDP-Kokona West), seconded the motion for the third reading of the bill.

In a related development, the House has adopted the report of its Joint Committee on Public Complaints, Petitions and Security/Judiciary, Ethics and Privileges on a Bill for Law to criminalise Kidnapping and for Connected Purposes Therewith.

The speaker slated Dec. 23 for the third reading of the bill, which recommended death penalty for kidnappers in the state.

Similarly, a Bill for a Law to Amend the Nasarawa State Fiscal Responsibility Commission Law (2013) scaled second reading at the floor of the House.

The Speaker committed the bill to the Standing Committee on Finance and Appropriation and directed the committee to report back on Dec. 18. (NAN)

Exercise Crocodile Smile lV: Army warns criminals to surrender illegal weapons

Okitipupa (Ondo State), Nov. 13, 2019 (NAN) The Nigerian Army, has warned all criminal elements in Ondo State to desist from their nefarious activities and surrender illegally acquired weapons or face the wrath of security agencies.

Maj.-Gen. Anthony Omozoje, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Ibadan, gave this warning at the flag off ceremony of Exercise Crocodile Smile lV on Wednesday at Okitipupa, Ondo State.

Omozoje, represented by Brig.-Gen. Thomas Ogunsugba, said it had become imperative for all criminals in Ondo State, especially southern part of the state to shun crime or face the full wrath of the law.

“It is in this light that exercise crocodile smile lV is being flagged off today in Okitipupa/Igbokoda southern parts of the state.

“The exercise is part of the Nigerian Army constitutional role of acting in aid of civil authority in combating various security threats faced by the affected parts of the state.

Omozoje listed the prevailing security challenges in the area to include, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and pipeline vandalism.

“Criminal elements in the state are hereby warned in their own interest to desist from their nefarious activities and surrender illegally acquired weapons or face decisive and appropriate actions by the security agencies”.

Omozoje, who said that the exercise was designed to be inter- agency and inter-service driven, urged participants including NPF, DSS, NSCDC, Customs, Immigration, NDLEA and the Prisons Service to work as a team and maintain the existing synergy among them.

“To the participants, as you are aware, the Nigerian army has zero tolerance for human rights abuses. Respect the rights of law abiding citizens as you carry out your assigned tasks.

“You must adhere to the code of conduct and rules of engagement guiding the conduct of the exercise, which has been issued.

“To the people of the state, I implore you to contribute your quota to the success of this exercise by volunteering information that can assist the brigade to realise the objectives of the exercise.

“To members of the fourth estate of the realm, please endeavour to verify information from the appropriate authorities to avoid fake news that can jeopardize the success of the exercise,” he admonished.

Omozoje lauded the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai for his immense support, direction and encouragement in the efforts of confronting the numerous security challenges facing the country, especially Ondo State.

In his welcome address, Brig. Gen. Zakari Abubakar, Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, said that the exercise was to check the various security challenges prevalent in the southern part of the state.

Abubakar said that the exercise would prevent stockpiling of arms and ammunition by criminals and assured that the brigade would continue to collaborate with other agencies to achieve the vision of the COAS.

In his speech, the state governor, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, represented by the  Secretary to the State Government, Mr Ifedayo Abegunde, pledged to support any operation towards securing the lives and property of the people.

Akeredolu urged the people to partner with security agencies to reduce crime, adding that government would not relent in its efforts to protect them, especially during yuletide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian Army donated some computer systems and printers, exercise books, generating sets, stationaries and sporting materials to schools at Atijere Community in Ilaje Local Government Area.

Also, some communities in the Ondo South Senatorial District were provided with free health services as part of the civil-military relations to flag off the exercise, which began on Nov. 8 and to end on Dec. 23. (NAN)

Nasarawa Assembly commends NAYES over security, sanitation

Lafia, Oct. 29, 2019 (NAN) The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Youths and Sport has commended the roles of members of the state chapter of the National Youths Empowerment Scheme (NAYES) in assisting security agencies in the maintenance of peace and stability in the state.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Salihu Iyimoga, made the commendation when the committee visited the NAYES office in Lafia.
Iyimoga (ZLP-Doma North), said that the role played by the members of NAYES had also helped in ensuring environmental cleanliness and traffic orderliness in the state.
“We are here as part of our oversight function in assessing on how the scheme is doing with the view of addressing any challenge if discovered.
“The members of NAYES are helping in assisting the security agencies in the maintenance of law and stability as well as ensuring environmental cleanliness and traffic orderliness in the state,’’ he said.
He urged the members of NAYES to continue to discharge their duties without fear or favour in the interest of peace and development.
The chairman assured the members of the scheme of the committee’s determination to support NAYES to succeed.
Responding, the State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr Labaran Maina, commended the committee for the initiative.
He assured the committee of his commitment to improve the welfare of the members of the scheme in the state. (NAN)

Lafia, Oct. 22, 2019 (NAN) The Provost, College of Agriculture, Lafia, Dr Musa Maikafi, has commended the Nasarawa Government for the construction of the institution’s fence and the provision of other infrastructures in the interest of the education sector in the state.
Maikafi made the commendation when the State House of Assembly Committee on Education paid an oversight visit to the school on Tuesday in Lafia.
Maikafi said that the fencing of the school has helped in not only securing the school environment but has also helped in ensuring security of lives and property of the staff and students.
The provost also commended the assembly for its intervention in tackling the problems facing the institution by ensuring that the school is fenced as well as the construction of the road network in the school.
“I want to appreciate your efforts in ensuring that the challenges facing the school are being tackled.
“With your support, intervention and collaboration with the state government, the school now has a fence and a road has been constructed from the school gate to the administrative block.
“The government also provided us with a Toyota 18-seater bus and a tractor to boost our activities; we are grateful to you and the state government,” he said.
He further commended the House for passing a bill to into second reading to upgrade the school status from College of Agriculture to College of Agriculture, Science and Technology.
The provost however solicited the support of the committee to tackle the school challenges, including personnel and accreditation of courses, among others.
“We also appeal to you to assist us to get funds for school convocation, implementation of staff promotions, settlement of gratuity, among others,” he urged.
Earlier, Mr Daniel Ogazi, the Chairman of the committee, said that the visit was to assess the budget performance of the school for the 2019 fiscal year.
“We are to perform our constitutional duties of oversight function by assessing your budget performance with the view of addressing any challenges if discovered.
“We have done our best through collaboration with the state government in ensuring that the school was fenced, the road was constructed and other infrastructures provided,” he said.
Ogazi (APC-Kokona East) assured them of the continued determination of the legislature to collaborate with the state executive in order to address the other challenges facing the school for the development of education. (NAN)

Kano, Oct. 20, 2019 (NAN) The Kano state Police command says it has provided adequate security to ensure the protection of lives and property around Kano Zoological Garden following the escape of a lion from its cage.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, mafe this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Sunday.

He said the command had deployed adequate armed policemen to prevent people from having access to the area in view of the prevailing situation.

The PPRO however advised the residents not to panic as experts and armed security personnel were making concerted efforts to capture the escaped animal.

He also called on the people of the area to be law abiding and cooperate with security personnel as the police had already cordoned off the area to have total control.

NAN recalls that the lion escaped from its cage when rangers were trying to put it back in its cage after they returned it from Nasarawa State where the national agricultural show took place.

The incident had forced many residents of the area to remain indoors while motorists had deserted the ever busy Zoo road since the incident happened on Saturday night. (NAN)

Abuja, Oct. 14, 2019 (NAN) The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), retired Col. Hammed Ali, said operatives of the ongoing Joint Border Security had seized items worth N1.4 billion since the partial closure of borders.
Ali disclosed this during a joint news conference with his counterpart from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Mohammed Babandede, in Abuja on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the joint border security exercise, codenamed “Exercise Swift Response”, commenced operation on Aug. 20.
It is set up to ensure a better security of the country’s territorial integrity, particularly the land and maritime borders against trans-border security concerns.
The exercise is being coordinated by Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in the four zones of North-West, North-Central, South-West and South-South geopolitical zones.
Ali explained that the items seized since the commencement of the exercise were 21,071 of 50Kg of per boiled foreign rice; 190 vehicles; 891 drums filled with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and 2,665 jerricans of vegetable oil.
He said other items were 133 motorcycles; 70 jerricans of PMS, and 131 bags of NPK fertiliser.
The customs boss explained that unscrupulous elements used such fertilisers for explosives to perpetuate mayhem in the country.
According to him, 95 per cent of illicit drugs and weapons use for terrorism come through the porous borders.
He further stated that the rate of insecurity in the country had reduced dramatically since the closure of borders.
He disclosed that 317 suspected smugglers and 146 illegal migrants have so far been arrested during the exercise.
Ali said the partial border closure had also boosted the revenue being generated by the service. (NAN)

Dutse, Aug. 28, 2019 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has advised Corps members to be security conscious in places of their primary assignments.
The Director-General of the corps, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, gave the advice while inspecting the Yakubu Gowon NYSC Camp in Dutse on Wednesday.
Represented by the Director, Legal Services NYSC National Headquarters, Mr Ahmad Tijjani, he assured the corps members that all hands are on desk to ensure their safety across the Country.
The director-general described Jigawa as one of the most peaceful states in the country, adding that they have no cause to fear.
Ibrahim also advised the corps members to always move in groups in case of any eventually and to put service to their country first before any other consideration.
“I also urge you to live peacefully with the host communities you will be deployed to for your primary assignments,’’ he said.
The Jigawa NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad, had earlier said that they are working assiduously to ensure success of the three weeks orientation course for the corps members.
Ibrahim however lamented the poor drains and other basic infrastructure in the camp, and called on the national headquarters to address the challenge.
NAN reports that highlight of the visit was traditional dance by the NYSC cultural troupe. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 27, 2019 (NAN) The Inter-Security Task Force set up by the Federal Government to conduct joint border security in four geopolitical zones have arrested 33 illegal migrants and seized several items in a week operation.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Joseph Attah, said this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
Attah explained that as at Monday, 33 illegal migrants were arrested, while 3,560 of 50kg bags of parboiled foreign rice had been seized.
He said 59 bags of NPK fertiliser; 15 vehicles; 12 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS); three engine boats; 65 drums of groundnut oil and four trucks were also confiscated.
According to him, other items seized are 75 gallons of PMS; 29 motorcycles; 68 gallons of vegetable oil, and another 70 jerricans of PMS.
“The exercise, which commenced barely a week ago, has received appreciable support from members of the populace such as border community dwellers and other well-meaning Nigerians.
“The exercise, led by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) with other Security and Intelligence agencies, have continued to patrol and secure our border areas.
“While an exercise of this nature is likely to create some inconveniences to members of the public, the overriding interest is to prevent the country against transnational security concerns, such as smuggling, proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
“Other concerned issues are irregular migration, terrorism and armed banditry, among others,” he said.
Attah said this was consistent with the constitutional responsibility of any well-meaning government, hence the need to continue to seek the support of all and sundry to achieve the desired objectives of the exercise.
According to him, this will help to promote a secured, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti state), Aug 26, 2019, (NAN) The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, (FUOYE), has proposed one billion naira for the provision of security and perimeter fencing of the University’s two campuses.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, made this known at a Pre-Convocation news conference at the institution’s main campus, Oye-Ekiti, on Monday, ahead of its combined graduation slated for Aug. 31.

“We are very concerned about the security of our staff and students; a billion naira has been estimated to fence the Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti campuses.

“We are experiencing occasional cases of trespasses on our lands and to prevent this, we have to fence our campuses, which will cost  N1billion,”  he said.

He said the university required N100million to conduct research across pivotal areas of the nation’s building and industries, stressing that the institution was desirous of making inroads in some industries to make the country proud.

Soremekun said the task of having major breakthroughs in the industry was crucial to those in the ivory tower, having identified the challenges in it.

The VC said it was dangerous for the country to rely on external professional bodies to design research agenda for Nigeria.

The don called on relevant national bodies to take up the challenge of funding researches so that such outcomes could be localised and made beneficial to the country.

He said a total of 1,000 students would be graduating and awarded with degrees at the combined convocation, out of which 35 got first class and 366 with second class degrees.

He urged the country to work on the issue of militant unionism, which he claimed, has taken over some campuses, describing this “as a huge distraction to management and smooth running of higher institutions.”

The VC said the gradual transformation of the institution has made him to be in good relationship with the students’ union body and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“I met 29 operational programmes when I came in Feb. 2016 and today, we have 60 programmes.

“We have also added Faculties of Education and Management Sciences to expand the scope,” he said.

The VC disclosed that the institution now runs a total of 60 courses, adding that efforts are being made to seek accreditation for the Law and Pharmacy Faculties from their respective councils

He explained that the permission had been granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run the faculties.

“In spite of our many great achievements, we also have challenges, which are mainly funding and issue of security occasioned by trespassing.

“This calls for an urgent need for perimeter fencing of the University premises.

“We also wish to note the challenge of militant unionism.

“While we recognize staff’s right to organise, agitate, including protests where inevitable, we advise that unionism must be done with legal permissible limits,” he said.

Soremekun hinted that an Islamic cleric, Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who saved 262 Christians that would have been killed by insurgents in 2018, would be given award of an Honorary Doctorate degree during the convocation.

Others on the honorary doctoral degree list are; Chief Guy Garguilo, an American Educationist and Philanthropist and  Bishop Felix Ajakaiye, the  Catholic Bishop of Ekiti.

He said the awards were in recognition of their exemplary services to humanity.

“As you would have noticed, the choice of these outstanding gentlemen was done without any bias for materialism, favouritism or nepotism or some selfish desires as our distracters may want the public to believe.

“We have allowed integrity, patriotism, selflessness to guide our sense of judgement in giving the honorary awards,” the VC said.(NAN)
