Celtic, Sevilla qualify for last-32 in Europa League

Rome, Nov. 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A last-gasp Olivier Ntcham goal handed Celtic a ticket to the last-32 knockout stage in the Europa League on Thursday while Munir El Haddadi’s hat-trick ensured Sevilla are also through.

Celtic won 2-1 at Lazio with almost the last kick of the game as Frenchman Ntcham elegantly chipped the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha deep in stoppage time for the Scottish side’s’ first-ever victory on Italian soil.

Munir’s goals for Sevilla were supplemented by two from Munas Dabbur in a 5-2 away drubbing of Luxembourg’s Dudelange as the Spaniards kept up their 100% record in Group A.

They had raced into a 4-0 halftime lead.

Swiss club Basle also inched closer to the knockout phase, with Fabian Frei scoring the winner on the hour mark as they beat visiting Getafe 2-1 to go four points clear in Group C.

PSV Eindhoven missed the chance to put poor domestic form behind them and also qualify for the last-32 as they let an early lead slip at LASK Linz and eventually lost 4-1.

A fifth minute penalty from Daniel Schwaab had the Dutch ahead at halftime but the Austrians were rampant after the break with Brazilian import Klauss bagging two late goals.

Sporting top Group D after a 2-0 win at hapless Rosenborg of Norway to move to nine points, two more than LASK and PSV.

A 1-1 draw between Standard Liege and Eintracht Frankfurt in Group F also helped the cause of leaders Arsenal, who conceded a stoppage-time equaliser on Wednesday at Vitoria Guimaraes for the same scoreline in Portugal.

Arsenal can make sure of progress to the knockout stage when they next host the German side on Nov. 28.

La Liga: Benzema header beats Sevilla to breathe life back into Real Madrid

Seville (Spain), Sept. 22, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A towering header from Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid an impressive 1-0 win at Sevilla to go level on points at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

The slim victory offered the perfect response to their recent humiliating UEFA Champions League defeat at Paris St-Germain (PSG).

Benzema gave the visitors the lead against former Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla midway through the second half in a tense game.

The French striker timed his jump to perfection to meet a cross from Dani Carvajal on the byline and sent the ball high into the net.

Sevilla’s former Real Madrid striker Javier Hernandez put the ball in the net for the hosts late in the game but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

Real Madrid  hung on to claim their first win at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in five seasons.

The victory saw Real Madrid climb into second place on 11 points after five games, level with leaders Athletic Bilbao.

On the other hand, Sevilla tumbled from top spot at the start of the weekend to fifth on 10 points.(Reuters/NAN)

Former Arsenal and Sevilla player Reyes dies in car accident

Madrid, June 1, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Former Sevilla and Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic accident, aged 35, several of his former clubs said on Saturday.

“We couldn’t be announcing any worse news. Our beloved former youth player Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic accident. Rest in peace,” said a statement on Sevilla’s official Twitter account.

Reyes was under contract at Spanish second tier side Extremadura.

Seven second tier games due to be played on Sunday, including Extremadura’s match against Cadiz, were postponed until Tuesday.

Reyes’ last match was a 1-0 win at Alcorcon on May 18.

“With a shrunken soul and a broken heart Extremadura reports the death of our player Jose Antonio Reyes in a traffic accident. We ask everyone to pray for his soul,” said a club statement.

The left winger also played for Arsenal, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, among other sides, and made 21 appearances for the Spain national team.

Spanish media said the accident occurred at 11.40am (0940 GMT) on Saturday morning on the road connecting his home city of Utrera and Seville.

Sevilla’s statement said his cousin Jonathan Reyes also died in the accident.

Reyes made his professional debut with Sevilla at the age of 16, moving to Arsenal in January 2004 for 17 million pounds.

He was part of the famous “Invincibles” which won the English Premier League (EPL) that season without losing a game.

“Jose, who was part of the Invincibles team, was a hugely popular figure at our club and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts are with all his family, friends and team-mates,” said Arsenal on Twitter.

He joined Real Madrid on loan in the 2006/2007 season, winning the La Liga title and later joined neighbours Atletico before returning to boyhood club Sevilla in 2012.

He went on to lift three consecutive Europa League titles between 2014 and 2016.

He later played for Espanyol and then Chinese club Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard before returning to Spain to join Extremadura in January.

Spain captain Sergio Ramos, a former team mate of Reyes at Sevilla, said on social media: “I’m broken, destroyed. I have no words. All my love to his family. We’ll always remember him. Rest in peace brother.”

Reyes’ death comes 12 years after Sevilla left back Antonio Puerta died from a heart attack during a match.

The club’s sporting director Monchi added: “It’s impossible to believe this news, it’s impossible to take in, how cruel. Rest in peace Jose Antonio Reyes…what a left wing you and Antonio are going to form up there in heaven.”

Sevilla sack coach after Europa League elimination

Seville (Spain), March 15, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sevilla have sacked coach Pablo Machin, the La Liga side said on Friday, a day after the team were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by Slavia Prague.

The club have placed their director of football, Joaquin Caparros, in charge until the end of the season.

Machin, who was hired last June on the back of his steady success with Girona, got off to a flying start with the Andalusian side.

He took them to the top of the table in November.

But results had declined in 2019, not helped by a congested fixtures list which had seen them play 50 games in all competitions.

This was due to their having to play six UEFA Europa League qualifiers at the start of the campaign.

“Sevilla FC have made the decision this Friday to part company with first team coach Pablo Machin, following a string of poor results in past weeks,” the club said in a statement on
their website.

Sevilla, who have one of the best home records in La Liga but had failed to win away from home since September, are sixth in the standings on 40 points.

They are also five points behind fourth-placed Getafe who occupy the final UEFA Champions League spot.

They were beaten 3-4 by Slavia Prague after extra time on Thursday for a 6-5 aggregate defeat, conceding the decisive goal in the 119th minute of play.

Arsenal lose at BATE as Inter, Sevilla, Benfica win in Europa League

London, Feb. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat at BATE Borisov on a night forward Alexandre Lacazette will want to forget after being sent off late on in the first legs of the Europa League last 32 on Thursday.

There was no such problem for heavyweights Inter Milan, Sevilla and Benfica as they all won away.

Arsenal had scored 10 goals in two matches against BATE Borisov in the same competition in 2017 but never looked like being as prolific in the freezing temperatures of Belarus.

BATE took the lead when Stanislav Dragun nodded a free kick past Arsenal goalkeeper Peter Cech seconds before halftime.

The gaol came shortly after Lacazette put a header wide midway through the first half.

The Frenchman thought he had made up for his miss 10 minutes after the break but his effort was ruled out for offside.

To compound his misery Lacazette was shown a red card five minutes from time for felling Aleksandar Filipovic with an elbow after the defender held him back and was also booked.

Elsewhere, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez netted a 39th minute penalty to secure a 1-0 win at Rapid Vienna.

Sevilla also beat Lazio by the same scoreline in Rome thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder’s close-range strike in the 22nd.

In the only tie featuring two teams who dropped down from the Champions League, visitors Benfica beat Galatasaray 2-1 after taking the lead in the 27th minute when Salvio converted a penalty given for handball.

Christian Luyindama equalised for the home side nine minutes into the second period but Benfica’s top scorer Haris Seferovic clinched the win with a fine solo goal 10 minutes later.

Only five of the 16 teams in action managed to score more than one goal with six of the night’s 16 coming in Stade Rennais’ thrilling 3-3 draw with Real Betis.

The French club were making their first knockout round appearance in Europe but they were not overawed by a team that came through the group stages unbeaten.

Winger Adrien Hunou put the home side ahead after two minutes and doubled their lead eight minutes later when Javi Garcia put through his own goal.

Betis got one back after 32 minutes when Giovani Lo Celso scored but Hatem Ben Arfa restored Rennais’ two-goal cushion right on halftime with a penalty.

Betis had the better of the second half and Sidnei made it 3-2 with a header before Mexican teenager Diego Lainez got the goal their pressure deserved right on the final whistle.

Dynamo Kiev scored in the last minute to salvage a 2-2 draw at Olympiakos Piraeus.

Im Russia, home team Krasnodar drew 0-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen, while Slavia Prague versus Genk also finished goalless. On Tuesday Fenerbahce beat Zenit 1-0.

FC Barcelona demolish Sevilla with spectacular 6-1 Cup comeback

Barcelona (Spain), Jan. 31, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Philippe Coutinho struck twice as FC Barcelona mounted a comeback to thrash Sevilla 6-1 and sweep into the Copa del Rey semi-finals 6-3 on aggregate on Wednesday.
After a 2-0 defeat in Seville last week in which they rested key players, the Catalans broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.
That was when Coutinho slotted home from the penalty kick spot after Quincy Promes’s foul on Lionel Messi.

Messi handed Coutinho the ball and the Brazilian playmaker converted the spot kick, ending a run of poor form.

Sevilla nearly equalised but goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen produced a brilliant save from Andre Silva’s backheel, before the Dutch goalkeeper palmed away Ever Banega’s penalty kick

Gerrard Pique fouled Roque Mesa and after a long delay while the incident was checked by VAR, Argentina midfielder Banega fired to the goalkeeper’s left.

But Cillessen flew across to keep the ball out.

FC Barcelona pulled the game level on aggregate in the 32nd minute when Ivan Rakitic nudged the ball past Juan Soriano with the faintest of touches after a sensational pass from Arthur.

Two goals in a two-minute spell after the break helped FC arcelona race ahead, with Coutinho heading in from Luis Suarez’s cross and Sergi Roberto tucking home a ball from Messi.

Guilherme Arana pulled a goal back for Sevilla with a powerful drive after the otherwise impressive Cillessen gave the ball away.

But Pablo Machin’s side were finally sunk when Suarez struck on the break and Messi added a late sixth.

Earlier Real Betis, whose Benito Villamarin stadium will host the final in May, beat Espanyol 3-1 at home after extra-time to progress 4-1 on aggregate.

Leo Baptistao headed Espanyol in front after 33 minutes but Giovani Lo Celso equalised in the 76th minute before Marc Roca was dismissed for the visitors.

Sevilla winger Nolito out for 3 months after leg injury

Seville (Spain), Jan. 12, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sevilla winger Nolito will be sidelined for about three months after breaking his leg in training, the Spanish club said in a statement on Saturday.

“He has suffered a fibula fracture which needs surgery and (he) will miss approximately three months,” Sevilla said in a statement.

Nolito, 32, has only played three league matches this season but scored and provided two assists as Sevilla beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 on Thursday in the Copa del Rey.

La Liga: Griezmann special earns Atletico 1-1 draw at Sevilla

Seville (Spain), Jan. 6, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A stunning free kick goal from Antoine Griezmann earned Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in an entertaining game between La Liga’s second and third-placed sides on Sunday.

The result weakened both sides’ pursuit of leaders Barcelona.

Sevilla took a deserved lead at a packed and rocking Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in the 37th minute with a close-range strike from Wissam Ben Yedder.

The goal came as a result of a clever team move, shortly after striker Andre Silva had also smacked the post for them.

Ben Yedder missed a clear chance to double Sevilla’s advantage but was thwarted by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, before Atletico pulled themselves level right at the end of the first half through Griezmann’s sizzling set-piece.

The draw left Atletico second in the standings on 35 points with Sevilla third on 33, while Barcelona, on 37 points and in action against Getafe later on Sunday, were handed the chance to move five points clear at the top.

In a calmer second half, Atletico, who created few chances throughout the game, managed to plug the holes that Sevilla had been exploiting.

Ben Yedder missed another chance for the home side, failing to find the target when clean through while team mate Quincy Promes saw an arrowed effort tipped away by Oblak.

Barcelona (Spain), Aug. 11, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Barcelona defender Gerard Pique reckons making the Spanish Super Cup a one-off game rather than a two-legged contest is a welcome development – but his coach, Ernesto Valverde, is not so sure.

The Spanish Football Federation has settled on the single-game format for Sunday’s encounter between Liga champions and Copa del Rey holders Barca and cup runners-up Sevilla.

It will also be played outside the country for the first time.

It says the change was a result of a lack of available dates because of Sevilla’s involvement in Europa League qualifiers — but it has been fiercely criticised by Sevilla’s president Jose Castro.

Pique welcomed the prospect of fewer games — although he conceded that playing the game in Tangier, Morocco, was not ideal.

“Anything that shortens the schedule is good for the players,” Pique told a news conference ahead of the game.

“There are many players who haven’t played even a friendly game because if (they had) we would have had no holidays.

“Every year there are more and more games, especially in World Cup years, so playing one game rather than two is much better,” said Pique.

He admitted: “Playing in Tangier means the conditions will not be the best but we will adapt.”

Valverde believes this year’s format will make the Super Cup harder to win for his side.

“Playing one game makes it more open, as with a second leg you can correct things,” he said. “Now we only have 90 minutes and it levels the playing field.”

He added: “Sevilla have the advantage that they have been competing for two or three weeks, so they will be more up to speed.

“We’ve come back from a pre-season tour and some players have returned a little late, while there are also some new faces. So we have to adjust a bit.

“But we are still excited about the opportunity of winning our first trophy of the season.”

Barca beat Sevilla 5-0 on aggregate in the 2016 Spanish Super Cup but crashed 5-1 to Real Madrid in last year’s competition.

Sevilla also lost 5-0 to Barca in last season’s Copa del Rey final and finished 35 points adrift of the Catalans in La Liga.

New coach Pablo Machin is under no illusions as to who the favourites are in Sunday’s game.

“It’s obvious that Barca are a super team and specialists in winning finals, and they have many of the best players in the world,” said Machin.

“But football is one of the few games in which an inferior team can beat a superior one — and we have a chance.” (Reuters/NAN)

Spanish Super Cup to be decided over one game – federation

Madrid, July 9, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) The Spanish Super Cup game between Barcelona and Sevilla will be contested over one match at a neutral venue on August 12.

This is a departure from the traditional two-leg home and away format, Spain’s football federation (RFEF) said on Monday.

According to reports in the Spanish media, the federation plans to have the game played outside Spain, in the Moroccan city of Tangier.

The federation did not say where the game would take place and did not respond to requests for comment.

Sevilla’s participation in the Europa League qualifying rounds, is reported to be behind the move to a one-game competition due to a lack of available dates before the Liga season kicks off on August 18.

The move is likely to anger Sevilla, who released a statement on their official Twitter account on Sunday declaring their opposition to playing the competition in one game.

Playing the contest at a neutral venue deprives each team of ticket revenue for the game that would otherwise be held at their home stadium.

“Sevilla have not changed their position, the Super Cup is scheduled for two games as it is stated in the calendar and that’s how Sevilla want it to be played.

“The club has not accepted any other proposal,” said the statement.
