Shell conducts free medical outreach for elderly in Rivers

Port Harcourt, Feb. 6, 2019 (NAN) The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) says it plans to provide more medical assistance to the elderly in its host communities.

Mr Sam Ezugworie, SPDC’s Asset Manager, Land Hub, disclosed this on Wednesday at the sideline of Shell-sponsored free medical outreach tagged: “SPDC Management Day Out.”

Ezugworie said that the company was passionate about the well-being of senior citizens in its over 200 host communities.

He said: “We felt that it is important to celebrate and appreciate the elders. We do not need to wait only when there are crises before they can be sought after.

“This initiative started three years ago; when we pulled out elders and key representatives from our neighbours and the areas where we operate to appreciate them.

He said the screening covered checks on high blood pressure; sugar level; eye tests, counselling, drugs and treated glasses were given to the beneficiaries.

“It is not only when we have problem that we run to them – elderly. It is good to also appreciate them when we don’t have problems.

“We did this so that when we have problems either with our neighbours or stakeholders, we can run to them with the goodwill that we have created.

“If we do the right thing; only then will they be able to listen to us because indeed we truly care,” he said.

Also speaking, SPDC’s Principal Environment Adviser, Prof. Eunice Nwachukwu urged the beneficiaries to use jute bags and steel utensils rather than plastic bags and utensils.

“Plastic does not dissolve nor decay; it is harmful to humans, plants and animals. Rather than dispose our plastic waste; we should keep them for recycling,” she advised.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Eze Innocent, while commending SPDC for the medical outreach, said that many of the beneficiaries had not undergone medical checks for years. (NAN)

Port Harcourt, Nov. 27, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 1,035 secondary school students  and undergraduates on Tuesday received scholarships to pursue their academic dreams in Nigeria and abroad.

Mr Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director and Country Chairman of Shell Petroleum, presented the scholarship letters to the beneficiaries during a ceremony organised by the company in Port Harcourt.

Okunbor said the scholarships were awarded to mark the company’s 2018 Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Joint Venture Education Day.

According to him, SPDC has for many decades invested heavily in the nation’s education sector as part of support to human resources and capital development of the country.

“In continuation of our efforts in education, SPDC-JV is offering 532 regular secondary students scholarships to continue their various academic pursuits.

“Also, 60 scholarships will be given to students in our Cradle-to-Career Secondary school programme while 430 will receive their undergraduates’ scholarships.

“In addition, 10 students will be giving scholarships to study abroad in our International Postgraduate scholarship programme,” he said.

Okunbor said the company would also sponsor professional chairs in Geophysics at the Centre of Excellence in Marine and Offshore Engineering at the Rivers State University.

He added that professional chairs would be endowed in Geosciences, Petroleum Engineering and Eco-Marathan while sabbaticals and research internship programmes would also get support.

“These initiatives are all aimed at enhancing collaboration with the academia to produce industry-ready graduates.

“SPDC is passionate about education, and this informed why for many decades, the company had been supporting education in Nigeria through scholarships and social investment initiatives.

“Education is often referred to as the soul of society and bedrock to growth and human capital development of any nation. SPDC believes in this statement,” he said.

The managing director gave assurance that the company would continue to support the Nigerian government towards actualizing the UNESCO Education For All programme in the country.

Speaking, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, commended SPDC for the scholarships and urged other multinational companies and organisations to emulate SPDC.

Represented by Mr Olagunju Latif, a senior official of the ministry, Adamu said the Federal Government was concerned with high tuition charged by some schools in the country.

“To this end, we commend the effort of Shell companies and its partners in complimenting the efforts of government in such critical areas that is of paramount importance to nation building,” he added.

Shell spends N202m on projects in Rivers communities

Omudioga (Rivers), May 23, 2018 (NAN) Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Joint Venture said it spent N202 million on projects in its host communities in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers.

Mr Igo Weli, General Manager, External Relations, SPDC, said this in Omudioga community on Wednesday at inauguration of 18 projects spread across 12 communities in Emohua Local Government.

Weli, represented by Dr Chibuzo Anyim, SPDC’s Coordinator of Community Interface, said the fund was spent in line with its Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) agreement with communities.

According to him, the projects were funded by SPDC and executed by Emuoha Cluster Development Boards in the area.
“Some of the executed projects include; renovation of chapels and examination halls in Omudioga and Obelle communities and renovation of dilapidated town hall in Ibaa community.

“Others are; bursary awards to undergraduate students of Rumuekpe community and the provision and reticulation of neighbourhood solar powered water scheme in Elele Alimi community, among others,” he said.

Weli said that SPDC’s operations in its host communities of Niger Delta had thrived since the company first introduced the cluster development boards in 2007.

He said that the communities are now reaping the rewards of their support to SPDC and assured of more projects and programmes for the communities.

“The GMoU development model has proved to be workable, fruitful and beneficial to all parties. So far, we have 37 active GMoU clusters funded by SPSC and its Venture partners.

“Apart from ensuring sustainability in community development initiatives; the model serves to improve interface with communities and promote socio-economic development of our host communities,” Weli said.

He urged the people to take ownership of the projects by protecting the projects against vandals and thieves.

Also speaking, Shell Community Interface Coordinator, Land East Hub, Mrs Boma Alumina said that Emuoha Cluster Development Board receives N78.4 million annually, and that the fund would culminate to N392 million in five years.

She said the company recently funded its Ukwa West Cluster Development Board (Abia) and Etche 2 Cluster Development Board (Rivers) with N205 million and N176 million respectively.

The Chairman of Emuoha Cluster Development Board, Sam Uzuobor commended the company’s commitment to sustainable development of communities in Emuoha and Ikwerre Local Government Areas of the state.

He listed 12 communities that benefited from the projects and programmes to include; Akpabu, Ebele-Alumini, Egbeda, Ibaa, Isiokpo, Itu, Obelle, Oduoha-Emohua, Omudioga, Rundele, Rumuekpe and Rumuji.
