Nadal dismantles Tsitsipas to reach Australian Open final

Melbourne(Australia), Jan. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) A marauding Rafa Nadal ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’s trailblazing run at the Australian Open on Thursday, thrashing the 20-year-old Greek in a 6-2 6-4 6-0 masterclass to reach a fifth final at Melbourne Park.

Staging a clinic under the lights at Rod Laver Arena, the Spanish second seed tamed the Tsitsipas serve.

He racked up 28 sparkling winners against the man who had knocked out double defending champion Roger Federer in the fourth round.

After roaring to a 5-0 lead in the final set, Nadal closed out the match with a huge serve in one hour and 46 minutes leaving Tsitsipas to beat a hasty exit from the stadium.

The 2009 champion Nadal will face either top seed Novak Djokovic or Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the final as he bids for a second Melbourne title and an 18th Grand Slam crown. (Reuters/NAN)

Federer knocked out of Australian Open by Greek wunderkind Tsitsipas

Melbourne (Australia), Jan. 20, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Roger Federer’s bid for a hat-trick of Australian Open titles was crushed on Sunday as Greek wunderkind Stefanos Tsitsipas rose up to floor the Swiss master.

Tsitsipas thus becomes his nation’s first Grand Slam quarter-finalist.

In a match pitting the oldest and youngest players left in the men’s draw, the 20-year-old Tsitsipas overhauled Federer 6-7(11) 7-6(3) 7-5 7-6(5) under the lights of Rod Laver Arena.

This sparked delirium among Greek fans out in force at Melbourne Park.

Federer will rue his chances, having failed to convert any of the 12 break points he took from Tsitsipas over the course of a riveting clash laden with sparkling shot-making.

Australian Open: Tsitsipas leads “Next Gen’’ charge against Federer

Melbourne (Australia), Jan. 19, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Blessed with great athleticism and impeccable technique, Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas will represent the new generation in their challenge to usurp the old guard.

His biggest test will however come on Sunday when he faces Roger Federer at Melbourne.

Next Gen Finals champion Tsitsipas enjoyed a breakthrough 2018 campaign and has surged to a career high ranking of 15.

Federer, making his 20th Melbourne appearance, is expecting a clash of styles against Tsitsipas, who pushed the Swiss maestro to two tiebreaks at the Hopman Cup earlier this month.

“I’m happy I played against him at the Hopman Cup. I think he played really well there. I actually did too. I thought it was really high-quality tennis,” the 37-year-old told reporters.

“This is obviously a different type of match, it being best of five, it being a fourth round of a slam, where we know now how we feel on this court.

“I like how he mixes up his game and also comes to the net — so will I. I think we will see some athletic attacking tennis being played.”

Big-hitting Czech Tomas Berdych, who spent a big chunk of last season on the sidelines with a back injury, will look to renew his rivalry with second seed Rafa Nadal.

Nadal has a 19-4 head-to-head advantage, but Berdych will hope for a repeat of his Melbourne quarter-final win in 2015.

Ashleigh Barty, bidding to become the first home winner of the Australian Open since Chris O’Neill in 1978, will face her biggest test when she takes on a rejuvenated Maria Sharapova.
