Lafia, March 19, 2019 (NAN) The Egbira National Development Association (ENDA) has called on members-elect of the 6th Nasarawa State House of Assembly to re-elect Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi as their Speaker.
The President of the group, Alhaji Gani Shafa, made the appeal on Tuesday when he led members on a visit to the speaker in Lafia.
Shafa said their visit was to congratulate AbdulIahi on his re-election as APC member representing Umaisha/Ugya state constituency.
He extolled the virtues of the legislator and commended him for bringing the dividends of democracy to the people of the constituency and the state at large.
“We are proud of you; you united the fifth Assembly as well as attracted development to our constituency, Toto Local Government and the state at large.
“Your leadership qualities have brought about the good working relationship between the executive and the legislature in the state.
“Our prayer is for you to retain your position as speaker for second term so as to lead the forthcoming sixth assembly in order to take the state to the next level of development,” he said.
Responding, the Abdullahi thanked them for the visit and identifying with his quest to win the speakership for the second time.
He noted that as an ambassador of peace, he should be seen doing the needful in ensuring peace among members of the legislature, the executive and the state at large.
The speaker reiterated his support and loyalty to the association at all times in the overriding interest of the society.
He however advised the Egbira community to love and tolerate all persons irrespective of their religious and political affiliations.
The speaker assured them of better days ahead, especially with the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and the emergence of Mr Abdullahi Sule as governor-elect of the state. (NAN)

Bauchi, March 15, 2019 (NAN) The Coalition of 20 governorship candidates in Bauchi State has endorsed the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct supplementary elections in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the governorship election in the state was declared inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Dr Mohammed Kyari, who said election in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area and some polling units across the state was marred by irregularities.
The returning officer also announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 102,000 votes ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which polled 56,000 votes in Bauchi Local Government Area.
Addressing newsmen in Bauchi, Alhaji Bello Abubakar, the spokesman of the coalition, urged INEC to go ahead and conduct the supplementary elections in the affected polling units.
“Since the electoral body will re-visit the election issues after making a pronouncement earlier that supplementary elections will hold, they should go ahead in the interest of the people and residents of Bauchi.
“Bauchi is greater than any individual, therefore in the interest of the good people of Bauchi and for maintenance of existing peace, there is need to conduct the supplementary elections,” he said.
Abubakar, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) in the state, explained that the coalition met and took the decision to salvage the state from any break down of law and order.
“The governorship candidates come from the following political parties: ADC, PDC, DA, AD, MPN, DPC, NEPP, MMN, SDP and KOWA.
Others are the ACDN, PPN, BNPP, APP, NRM, UPN, SNP, APA, AA and AGA,” he said.
On his part, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Element Professional Party (NEPP), commended INEC for taking the right step to conduct supplementary elections in the affected areas.
He however called on their supporters and residents to remain calm and excise patience over the INEC decision.
“We equally call on residents to maintain the peace and act in the best of conduct before, during and after the supplementary election which shall come up on Saturday, 23rd March 2019.
“Do not allow yourselves to be provoked by anyone who does not wish our dear state well. I believe we all want the best for the state,” he advised. (NAN)

Nasarawa (Nasarawa State), Feb. 16, 2019 (NAN) Former Sen. Abubakar Sodangi (PDP-Nasarawa West) has appealed to Nigerians to have faith and appreciate the enormous challenges of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Sodangi made the call while reacting to the postponement of the Feb. 16 and March 2 general elections by INEC on Saturday in Nasarawa.
Sodangi, who is now a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, said that it was better for the electoral umpire to shift the polls if there were problems in order to have free and fair elections in the country.
“It has happened and it has been announced by INEC whose responsibility is to conduct free, fair, acceptable and credible elections.
“The electorate are fully ready to come out en mass and cast their votes for President Muhammadu Buhari because the president has done well especially in the area of corruption, economy and security.
“Also we have stakeholders like the domestic and international observers who are here in the country to observe the election to ensure its credibility.
“If INEC thinks that there is logistic problem, let us be patient with the commission in order to have free and fair election.
“It is better to shift the election and do it correctly.
“It is in view of this that I want to appeal to the electorate and other Nigerians to be patient with INEC on election postponement,” he said.
The former lawmaker also urged APC supporters and Nigerians to come out en masse and vote President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates in the rescheduled elections.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, late Friday announced the rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections by one week
Yakubu also said that the governorship, House of Assembly and FCT area council elections had also been shifted from March 2 to March 9.
The chairman attributed the postponement of the polls to logistic and operational problems.
He said the postponement would afford the commission the opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of Nigeria’s elections. (NAN)

Lagos IPAC seeks support for INEC

Lagos, Feb. 16, 2019 (NAN) The Lagos Chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has appealed to Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in order to deliver credible elections.

The state Chairman of the council, Malam Shakirudeen Olofin, made the call on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He was reacting to the rescheduling of the Presidential, National Assembly, governorship and FCT area council polls by the electoral umpire.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, announced the rescheduling after an emergency meeting of the commission late Friday, saying the Presidential/NASS elections earlier fixed for Feb.16 would now hold on Feb. 23.

He added that the governorship election had also been shifted by one week, and that the poll would now be conducted on March 9 instead of the earlier date of March 2.

Yakubu explained that the postponement was necessitated by some logistic and operational challenges, and that the shift would enable INEC address the issues to deliver quality elections that the nation deserves.

Reacting, Olofin said INEC’s explanation for the postponement of the elections was valid and urged Nigerians to show understanding and support the commission to succeed.

He said the expectation of all well-meaning Nigerians was for the commission to deliver credible elections and that citizens should stand with INEC to deliver that.

The IPAC chairman said election postponement was not new in the country as the 2015 election, adjudged to be one of the most credible in the country‘s history was also rescheduled.

Olofin called for calm on the development, saying it is wrong for anybody to read negative meanings or heat up the political space over the decision.

“We should all be calm and show understanding with INEC on the postponement of the polls.

“INEC has said the rescheduling is to enable them give Nigeria credible elections and we think waiting patiently for another seven days should not be a problem.

“We should remember that the 2015 elections were initially rescheduled owing to the same operational challenges being cited now, and at the end of the day, we got one of the best elections in our history.

“Nigerians, particularly, stakeholders should not heat up the political space over the postponement. We should be patient and give INEC benefit of the doubts to keep its promise,” he said.

He said the loss of electoral materials to inferno in some states and the late court verdicts on the Zamfara All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries should make even sceptics stand with INEC on the postponement.

Olofin said a free, fair and credible election was a misnomer when some Nigerians were disefranchised for whatever reason.

The IPAC chairman however urged INEC to live up to its promise to deliver credible elections, saying all Nigerians and the world are keenly watching and will not accept anything short of the promise to deliver a free, fair, credible and acceptable poll. (NAN)

Sciences: Calabar residents advocate more support for women, girls

Calabar, Feb. 11, 2019 (NAN) Residents of Calabar have called for more support for women and girls in different fields of sciences so as to encourage more females to choose the sciences as career path.
The residents made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar.
They spoke against the backdrop of this year’s International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
One of the residents, Miss Blessing Adedokun, an Assistant Natural Resources and Policy Component Personnel with Cuso International, said women are currently doing well in sciences but the number was not as much as they wanted.
Adedokun said there should be equality in the support given to women who are willing to go into the sciences and those who are already in the field.
She regretted that even in the 21s century, many parents still believe that sciences are basically for men while women should go into art related courses for their own safety.
“The society believes that women do not have the capacity to go into certain areas of sciences but I believe that if women are given the chance to express themselves more, there would be more women going into the field of sciences.
“I believe the society and our parents are affecting the choices of our women and girls by not giving them the chance to express themselves freely and choose a career path.
“I don’t believe the males are more calculative and the women speak better because everyone is talented in something, you just need to discover the talent, no sex has the monopoly of a particular skill.
“Even in the area of engineering, the women can go into it if they choose to, they don’t have to be in the field but could be the brains of any engineering work,” she said.
Similarly, a Pharmacist, Miss Jenom Enene, said though we see more women going into different fields of sciences today, it was not enough as more women needed to be aware that they can go into sciences too.
“The notion that some science based professions should be left for the men folk is erroneous.
“It is a general notion here which needs to be corrected that any woman in white in a hospital is a nurse while every man in a hospital in a white coat is a doctor; we forget that there are other professions needed in the hospital.
“We should encourage more women to go into different spheres of science and explore, there is so much to be done there like research areas yet untapped,” she said.
NAN reports that the International Day for Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on Feb. 11 to promote the participation of women in fields related to science and technology.
The theme for the 2019 celebration is investment in women and girls in science for inclusive green growth. (NAN)

Abuja, Jan. 15, 2018 (NAN) The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has urged the Federal Government to sustain its support to the armed forces in terms of human and material resources needed for effective security in the country.
In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, Dr Francis Faduyile, the President of the association, said the armed forces should be appreciated.
“As we remember our fallen heroes today, we urge Nigerians to show appreciation to the men of the armed forces and pray for peace in our land as we approach the general elections.
“The NMA wishes to salute the efforts and gallantry of the men of the Nigerian armed forces for safeguarding the territorial integrity of Nigerian nation over the years.’’
He said that the NMA recognises and salute the selflessness of the fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces for paying the supreme price for our nation.
Faduyile also urged Nigerians not to allow the of sacrifices security agencies to be in vain.
He prayed that may the beautiful souls of the fallen heroes continue to rest in peace. (NAN)

International Org. begins humanitarian support for 800 Borno families

Abuja, Jan. 10, 2019 (NAN) Action Against Hunger, an international NGO, has begun the provision of humanitarian response for 800 internally displaced persons and their families in Monguno, Borno.

The Country Director of the organisation, Mr Shashwat Saraf, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Saraf said that food, water, clothes and medicines remained key priority needs, adding that with continued displacement, more interventions were needed.

He said no fewer than 800 families were being provided non-food items and hygiene kits and the team was also training 135 community volunteers to start mass screening of children for malnutrition.

According to him, this will lead to subsequent treatment at the six health centres supported by the organisation.

“We have 90 of our team members responding to the health and nutrition needs as well as urgent water, sanitation and hygiene needs, but there is still so much that needs to be done.

“Following a second attack on Kekeno and Monguno Military Barracks on Dec. 28, many humanitarian personnel had to be temporarily relocated to Maiduguri on Dec. 29,” he said.

Saraf said this had led to a noticeable absence of humanitarian workforce from Monguno town except for few organisations delivering essential lifesaving health and nutrition services.

He stressed the need for more humanitarian actors to respond to the needs following continued increase of the scale of the displacement.

“It is vital that we have humanitarian actors back in Monguno to respond to the needs of the new arrivals, in addition to providing aid to the large numbers of displaced people already present,” Saraf said.

Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation which was established in France and is committed to ending world hunger.

The organisation helps malnourished children and provides communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger. (NAN)

Lagos, Jan. 7, 2019 (NAN) The Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) has expressed its readiness to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in the February general election.

Mr Israel Adeshola, the BCAN National President, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

Adeshola said that the association was convinced beyond doubt that the only way to guarantee better future for the country was through good governance and sincere leadership.

“The only way to achieve this is for us to collectively ensure that President Buhari return in 2019.

“It takes patience, sacrifice and honest commitment to rebuild what had been destroyed and that’s what the administration has been doing since it took over the helm of affairs.

“We all know that to destroy is very easy but to build is always not easy.

“The last 16 years of past administration witnessed the destruction of our economy as never before in the history of the country.

“The impunity that pervaded the previous administration greatly undermined the economic growth of the nation.

“There is no doubt that President Buhari is genuinely committed to ensuring that Nigeria regains her place as the giant of Africa both economically and politically,” he said.

The BCAN leader said that the association has advised its members to guide their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) jealously as they crave for the return of the president.

“The decision we make today will determine how good or bad our tomorrow will be,” he added.

Adeshola said that now was the time Nigerian citizens must take that crucial decision of tomorrow to ensure better future for ourselves and coming generations.

According to him, Buhari was committed to bettering the lot of Nigerian citizens through sustainable economic programmes aimed at improving social economic conditions of people.

“One of such programme is the empowerment of small scale businesses for sustainable growth and development where many people have benefited.

“President Buhari does not believe in given you fish but to teach you how to fish by yourself so that you can be self reliant, those who give you fish today may not give you tomorrow,” he said.

Adeshola said that Buhari return in 2019 would allow him complete the good work he has started by ensuring the quality of life of an average Nigerian and ensure future of unborn generations were secured and protected.

The BCAN president however called for unity and oneness among its members and the electorate to work as a team, collaborate with one another to ensure comprehensive victory for Buhari.

NAN reports that BCAN has mobilised its members and inaugurated its campaign offices in Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Delta, Kogi, Ondo, Kwara, Jigawa and Kaduna States to mobilise support and ensure the re-election Buhari. (NAN)

Kaduna, Nov. 17, 2018 (NAN) The 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, on Saturday inaugurated a renovated primary school, offered free medical treatment to 3,000 people and donated 250 treated mosquito nets to pregnant women at Sayen Lemu village, Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Mohammed, disclosed this during a medical outreach and inauguration of two renovated blocks of classrooms.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the medical outreach included free medical screening for hypertension, diabetes, kidney and eye diseases.
Others include mass de-worming, dental care, provision of lenses and reading glasses, health education, hepatitis B and HIV screening.
The outreach also witnessed the distribution of about 240 treated mosquito nets and free medical consultation to expectant mothers.
Mohammed explained that the army community engagement programme was aimed at winning the confidence of the people in the Army and the Armed Forces in general.
The GOC explained that the Army was not only formed for war but also to provide succour to all communities under its area of responsibility so as to get their cooperation, especially in information gathering as well as encouraging youths to join the Armed Forces and move the country forward.
He noted that the programme was in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff to all formations to promote civil-military relations.
The GOC said beneficiaries with minor cases would be given on the spot treatment, while those with critical cases would be referred to Kaduna for further treatment.
He noted that the idea of renovating the two blocks of classrooms was conceived to complement efforts of reducing the number of out of school children, assuring that the division would in the next few weeks construct boreholes to ease water scarcity in the community.
The Vice Chairman, Zaria Local Government Council, Malam Aliyu Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army for the kind gesture and pledged to complement the effort.
NAN also reports that some of the communities that benefitted from the Division’s medical outreach this year include Kasuwan Magani, Buruku, Kakangi, Tegina, Kawo, Pandogari and Sayen Lemu. (NAN)
