Speaker assures of redeeming campaign promises

Umaisha (Nasarawa State), March 22, 2019 (NAN) Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has assured members of his constituents that he would fulfil his campaign promises.
Abdullahi (APC-Umaisha/Ugya constituency) gave the assurance on Thursday when he paid a thank you visit to the people of his constituency in Umaisha, Toto Local Government Area of the state.
The speaker said that he was at his constituency to appreciate his people for re-electing him for a second term.
“You have seen what I have done in my first tenure towards improving on our standard of living.
“I will fulfil my second term electioneering campaign promises made to you which include continue initiation of people oriented programmes by God’s grace.
“I have initiated different programmes such as scholarship to students, youths and women empowerment, among others.
“I am here to thank the people of my constituency for supporting and voting APC candidates at all levels during the Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
“I have always said that this is the time we should face the reality because for us to get more government’s presence, we must be part of the government.
“It is only the APC government that will deliver the much-needed dividends of democracy to the electorate and we thank you for voting APC.
“I want to assure you (constituents) of fulfilling my campaign promises in order to better the standard of living of my people and Nigerians at large,’’ he said.
Abdullahi assured the constituents of his continued desire to operate an open door policy and to carry everybody along while discharging his duties.
He called on his constituents and Nigerians to continue to give their maximum support and cooperation to the APC-led government at all levels to enable them succeed.
Abdullahi, who is also the Vice Chairman, North-Central, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, said that every leader needed support from the public to succeed.
The speaker urged Nigerians to live peacefully with one another and tolerate themselves irrespective of their affiliations. (NAN)

Invention: Men must also keep home so women can follow up dreams – IT expert

Lagos, May 16, 2018 (NAN) An NGO, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN), on Wednesday called for promotion of documentation culture among inventors, especially as regards patent filing.

The PIN Executive Director, Mr Gbenga Sesan, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Sesan said that a report by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) showed that Africans, especially women, were not registering their inventions for patent.

He said that the report implied that more women innovators were needed to raise the number filing patent.

The executive director told NAN that patents had been a missing link in technological advancement.

Sesan noted that patent would give an inventor or designer the right to stop others from copying, manufacturing, selling or importing his invention without permission.

“Patent is about protecting your intellectual property, probably for a pre-determined period, allowing you to keep competitors in check.

‘`There is need to encourage the culture of documentation; it is not just making money from ideas.

“We need to understand the connection between education, innovation and economic development.

“Once we realise the impact of innovation on the economy, it becomes easier for us to encourage patent filing,’’ he said.

Sesan said that there was the need to work harder to get women innovators by encouraging girls to show more interest in technology.

“If more girls are interested, the chances that they will file patents as women increases,’’ Sesan said.

The PIN director suggested demystifying of technology education and opportunities to show they were not `men-only’.

“We also need to stop trying to domesticate women and limit them to marriage, raising children and building families.

“Men must also keep the home so women can have time to follow up on their dreams.

“As long as men consider things such as feeding baby and changing diapers the exclusive roles of women, we will have less and less women with the opportunities to give expression to their innovative ideas.’’

He said that disconnect between the academia and industry had also led to lack of culture of strong research, adding that the country must tackle it as a strategy to take patenting more seriously.

“The government must seek to understand and support innovation,’’ the PIN director said. (NAN)
