Scavenger bags 3 months imprisonment for stealing 23 aluminium roofing sheets

Bwari (Abuja), March 26, 2020 (NAN) A Grade I Area Court in Dutse, Abuja on Thursday sentenced  an 18-year-old scavenger, Nura Ibrahim,, to three months imprisonment for stealing 23 sheets of aluminium roofing sheets, worth N11,500.

The Presiding Officer, Mr Suleiman Mohammed, sentenced Ibrahim after he pleaded guilty to trespass and theft.

Mohammed, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N5, 000.

The presiding officer held that the convict failed to give the court a reasonable explanation why he committed the crime.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Tunde Arowolo told the court that a distress call was received at the Bwari Police station on Feb. 19, by an anonymous informant that the convict stole the sheets from a block of four flats on Evans Timothy Street, Bwari, FCT.

Arowolo said that the flour flats were empty as a result of a fire that gutted the flats on Feb. 10.

When the police got there, he said, the convict was arrested on the site with 23 pieces of aluminium sheets.

The prosecution said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 342 of the Penal Code Law.(NAN)

Kaduna, Oct. 14, 2019 (NAN) A Shari’a Court sitting at Rigasa, Kaduna, on Monday sentenced 18-year old Abubakar Salihu to nine months imprisonment for breaking into one Fatima Abubakar’s house and stealing a torchlight, two power banks and N18,500 cash.
The Judge, Malam Dahiru Bamalli, gave the ruling after the accused pleaded guilty to the charges bordering on house breaking and theft.
The judge however gave the convict an option of N14,000 fine and ordered him to return the N18,500 cash he stole.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Sambo Maigari, told the court that the convict, who reside at Yan Kifi road, Rigasa, was caught stealing from Fatima’s house on Oct. 11.
“He was caught while trying to escape and we recovered the power banks and torchlight; the money was however not recovered,” he said.
Maigari stated that the offence contravened Sections 178 and 141 of the Shari’a Criminal Procedure Code (SCPC). (NAN)

Bauchi, Feb. 23, 2018 (NAN) The Bauchi State Government says it will investigate the theft incident recorded on Wednesday at the state College of Nursing and Midwifery.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Zuwaira Ibrahim, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after inspecting the affected hostel on Friday in Bauchi.
Ibrahim said that government would partner security agencies over to unravel the development.
She said that no live was lost and no student was injured, adding that government will ensure that the school was adequately secured.
“I am here to inspect what happened in the college, but we thank God no live was lost.
“As a matter of urgency, the ministry will write to his Excellency for onward completion of the fence as I was told the contractor did not complete the project,” she said.
She advised the college management to be vigilant towards safe guarding the lives and property of the students and the college at large.
Earlier, the Acting Provost of the College, Hajiya Rakiya Saleh, said that the incident occurred on Wednesday during school hours.
“Some of the students left for clinical around 7.30 a.m while some were in classes.
“So the first batch to return from clinical around 2.30 p.m entered their roomd and found that the ceilings were tempered with and the burglars have taken way some of their valuables and money.
“That was when they raised an alarm and reported.
“After visiting the scene, we realised that the burglars entered some rooms in the girls’ hotel,” she said.
Saleh said that the college has many exit and entry points which allowed for unregulated movement of outsiders into the premises.
She explained that the college has about 24 security personnel whom were running shift duty. (NAN)

Lagos, Dec. 28, 2017 (NAN) A 26-year-old unemployed, Alex Godwin, is to spend the next six months in prison for stealing a car battery, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, has ruled.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, pronounced the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing on Thursday.
Awope, who sentenced Godwin without an option of fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.
“You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.
“The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.
Godwin, a resident of Alagbado in Ogun, had at his arraignment on Dec. 4 pleaded guilty to the offence and was remanded in prison.
When the case was called up for fact and sentence, he still admitted guilt but pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 27 at Iju Road, Agege, Lagos.
He said that the accused stole a motor battery whose value and owner yet unknown.
“The accused was caught with the battery by security guards on the street.
“When he was questioned, he confessed that he removed the battery inside a commercial bus parked along the road,” he said.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). (NAN)

AEDC partners security agencies, others to reduce electricity theft

Abuja, May 2,2017 (NAN) The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says  its partnership with the Director of Prosecution of the Federation, Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will help eliminate  electricity related offences in its area of coverage.

AEDC’s Managing Director, Mr Ernest Mupwaya, said this at the inauguration of a special electricity offences investigation and prosecution team in Abuja on Tuesday.

The special task force team was set up by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Federation with the mandate to deal with the menace of electricity theft in AEDCs’ areas of operation.

Mupwaya said that the losses caused by electricity related offences were resulting in distortions of significant magnitude to the company.

This, he said, had made the DisCOs  not  to properly  account for the energy allocated to them due to electricity theft, through illegal connections, meter tampering and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

He also said that the issue had also resulted to the insufficient payments received by the DisCos, Transmission Company (TCN) and the gas suppliers.

Mupwaya said it was important to address the issue of electricity theft, given its significant effect  to the transformation of the electricity industry in the country.

According to him, there is no provision for electricity related offences in the Penal Code, Miscellaneous offences Act and Electricity Power Sector Reform Act, hence, the partnership with the agencies of government.

He said that AEDC would work with the agencies to ensure easy investigation and prosecution of electricity offences.

The managing director said that AEDC would also work with the DPP’s office to engage the FCT Chief Judge to assign electricity cases to judges.

Mupwaya said that the company was also prepared to organise the requisite training for such judicial officers to understand the basic information of electricity offences.

According to him, such training is also being planned for the members of the taskforce.

He said that it was the desire of AEDC that the awareness of the various electricity offences would result in the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

He said it would serve as deterrents to other would be offenders.

Responding, the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr Mohammed Umaru, said that electricity theft had gone unchecked for a long time in the country.

He said that members of the task force had a herculean task to cub electricity related offences, adding that their responsibility was to assiduously collaborate with AEDC to investigate and prosecute all cases of electricity theft in AEDC’s coverage area.

Umaru said that the task force was also expected to make recommendation to him and AEDC management on other alternative dispute resolution mechanism where necessary.

He said the team was expected to carry out public awareness on the adverse effect of electricity theft on the Nigerian economy.

Umaru said that the commitment of the team to discharge its mandate would ultimately boost power supply and economic activities in the franchise area of AEDC.

He said that the success of the team would ultimately spread to other franchise areas of other distribution companies in the country.

NAN also reports that high point of the event was the presentation of AEDC’s  Electricity Theft Information Booklet to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation.(NAN)

Student, 20, docked for allegedly stabbing man, stealing phone

Jos, March 29, 2017 (NAN) A 20-year-old student, Idris Isah,who allegedly stabbed one Abbas Salihu with a knife and stole his cell phone, appeared before a Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The accused, a resident of Tudun Wada, Jos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, causing hurt and stealing.

The prosecutor, Mr Joshua Kasuwa, told the court that Salihu, a resident of Yan-Doya, Gadan Bako, Jos, reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwom police station, on March 24.

Kasuwa said that the accused, and some others still at large, accosted the complainant on the road, and started beating him “without any reason”.

“The accused used a knife and stabbed the complainant on his forehead; while he was on the floor writhing in pains, they stole his phone valued at N70,000,’’ he said.

Kasuwa said that the accused was arrested in his house after a tip-off to the police, by a member of the public.

“ During investigation, Isah confessed that it was one Kabiru, who is still at large, that stabbed the complainant,’’ he said

The offence contravened Sections 97, 288 and 323 of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Binjin said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should submit two recent passport-sized photographs and their national ID cards to the court.

The case was adjourned to April 19, for mention. (NAN)

Security man jailed 3 months for stealing 2 necklaces

Jos, March 21, 2017 (NAN) A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced a 29-year-old security man, Samson Williams, to three months in prison, for stealing two necklaces and a face-cap valued at N6, 500.

Williams, who resides behind Police Field, Jos, was charged with theft.

The magistrate, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Mafuyai, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the crime and begged the court for leniency.

The convict, in his plea, blamed hunger and the “devil” for his actions.

“It was hunger that made me do it; I was very hungry and wanted something to eat.

“I have not been paid salary for two months and wanted to sell the items so that I can have small money.

“It is the work of the devil, have mercy on me. I will not do it again,” he pleaded.

The magistrate, in her sentence, however, gave the convict a fine option of N3,000.

She said that the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Mr Yongu Terngu, had told the court that one Eunice John, who said she was a resident of Popular Hotel, Jos, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Division police station, on March 11.

Terngu alleged that the accused person went into the complainant’s hotel room, while she was away, and removed two necklaces and a face-cap all valued at N6, 500.

“The accused person was apprehended at the police field and when a search was conducted on him, the items were found on him,” he said.

The prosecutor further alleged that a mobile phone, a phone battery and a power bank, suspected to be stolen items, were also recovered from Williams.

He said that the offence contravened section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)

Jos, March 14, 2017 (NAN) A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced three men – David Bulus, 24, Adebayo Musa, 25, and Hafisu Ibrahim, 28 – to a total of 40 months in prison, for stealing palm oil.

Other items stolen by the convicts included phones and TV monitor, valued at N128,000, and N6,000 cash.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the first accused, Bulus, was charged with criminal trespass, house breaking and theft, while the second and third accused were charged with receiving stolen property.

The magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, sentenced the trio after pleading guilty to the crimes.

Binjin sentenced Bulus to 20 months in prison for the offences of trespass, house breaking and theft, while the second and third accused were jailed 10 months each, for receiving stolen property.

He, however, gave the first convict an option of N10,000 fine, while the second and third accused were given fine options of N5,000 each.

The magistrate said that the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Mr Shuaibu Mohammed, had told the court that one Ndubuisi Uche, resident at No. 38 Nabor, Nasarawa Gwom, reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwom Police Station, on March 8.

Mohammed said that the first accused person, Bulus, broke into the complainant’s house and stole some items and listed them to include palm oil, a TV monitor, UPS, two phones, some scraps, and N6,000 cash.

The prosecutor told the court that Bulus later sold the stolen palm oil to one Hafiu Ibrahim, at the rate of N10,500, while the scraps were sold to one Adebayo Musa, at the rate of N2,500.

He said that the accused person sold the remaining items to two other persons, who had not been arrested.

“During police investigation, the accused persons pleaded guilty thereby running foul of sections 348, 346, 288 and 317 of the Penal Code,” he told the court. (NAN)

Lagos, Feb.1, 2017(NAN) Eight staff, charged with stealing their employer’s N3million, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate on Lagos.

The accused – Godwin Akpan, 30; Adesola Adeyemi, 35; Taiwo Lawal, 25; Egbono John, 33; Ayomide Williams, 21; Kabirat Abisola, 25; Olamide Adeyemi, 25; and Ngozi Ejike, 32, were charged with conspiracy and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Essien Ndarake, the accused committed the offences on Jan. 14, at the International Wing of Murtala Mohammed International Airport(MMIA), Lagos.

He said that the accused conspired to steal N3million belonging to Metropolitan Bar and Grill, owned by one Mrs. Ebenezer Idowu.

“The accused, who are workers of the outfit, conspired to steal their employer’s money,” he said.

Ndarake alleged that the company discovered the theft after auditing its accounts.

“After careful study of the financial activities of the company, it was discovered that N3million was stolen, which  placed the company in jeopardy.

“When the workers were called, four of them confessed that all of them had been stealing from the company,” he said.

He said that the offences contravened sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment as penalty for stealing.

The accused all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with two sureties in like sum by the magistrate, Mrs. K. Kubeinje, who adjourned the case to Feb. 20 for mention. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Jan. 29, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, Nasarawa State, has called for an independent professional investigation to unravel the truth behind allegation of stolen kidney at the hospital.

The Medical Director of the centre, Dr Giyan Joshua-Ndom, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Keffi.

Joshua-Ndom said the proposed inquiry would ascertain the truth behind an allegation by a patient that his kidney was removed at the centre by a consultant.

“It is better for an independent professional qualified arbiter to look in to the matter of alleged kidney removal so that the patient can properly be educated since, as it is now, he has lost confidence in the centre,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that there is ongoing report on the social media and some radio stations that one Mohammed Barau alleging that one of his kidneys was removed during an operation in FMC, Keffi.

“One of the ridiculous allegations by a former patient is that one of his kidneys was removed by a doctor in my centre during his abdomen operation.

“I therefore do not speak in defence of any one, but as the accounting officer of the centre.

“Having investigated the issue thoroughly, I am in a position to give you adequate information that guided us aright that the said patient came here in 2010, critically ill and the doctors battled to save his life.

“They removed pussy tumour on the left side of his abdomen that was suspected to be cancer but tests failed to confirm that. He was nursed and discharged about a month.

“He returned six years later for treatment of another ailment, at which time his left kidney was discovered to be missing as adequate analysis and information at this stage was the needful as one of the kidney drivers of patient satisfaction which he did not get.

“Without proper education, he jumped in to the conclusion that his kidney has been stolen. Histopathology report would have helped identify what was removed but the report showed that it was rotten beyond reasonable analysis,” he said.

According to him, “the patient also claimed that an unknown number called offering him N10 million to drop the matter, this beats logic and common sense.

“In contentious cases like this, it would be better for an independent professionally qualified arbiter to look in to the matter so that the patient can properly be educated since, as it is now he has lost confidence in us”.

Joshua-Ndom urged journalists and members of the public to always confirm information, especially about the centre with the management, before reporting in the interest of peace and national development.

The medical director restated the commitment of the management of the centre to continue to key in to policies and programmes that have direct bearing on patients and the lives of the staff. (NAN)
