Abuja, Dec. 8, 2018 (NAN) Dr Humshe Phillip, a dietician, has warned against incessant consumption of fast foods without regular exercise, saying it may increase the risk of obesity.
Phillip told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday that fast foods had little or no health benefits.
The dietician said that environmental factors, such as regular eating of fast foods, may increase the risk of obesity.
According to her, though fast foods may not directly cause obesity but consuming more calories than what the body could burn off is what causes weight gain.
She said everyone required the knowledge of the quantity of calories they should burn off daily as well as the number of calories in the food they ate, which could lead to weight gain.
She said that people who indulge in eating fast foods consume more calories than the people who do not eat them were prone to obesity.
“It is good to know your nutritional facts before going to your favourite fast food restaurant, to enable you determine how much calories is contained in the food you want to consume,’’ the dietician said.
Phillip added that hypertension could develop from the consumption of fast foods, which according to her contained high calories like salad dressing and butter with high fat content.
According to her, the relationship between hypertension, obesity and fast foods can be associated with the modern day “on-the-go” lifestyle and easy access to fast food outlets.
“The prevalence of hypertension is on the rise not only in adults but in children, which should be of concern to all, as some are linked to the type of food they consume,’’ she said.
According to her, physical exercises also improve the health but modern lifestyle has also made it more challenging. (NAN)

Lagos, July 1, 2018 (NAN) The newly promoted Commissioner of Police (CP) Damian Okoro has warned officers at the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Ikoyi, to shun corruption or be shown the way out of the force.
Okoro gave the warning on Sunday at Ikoyi, Lagos, while decorating 27 officers who were recently promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
The police boss, who was earlier decorated with the rank of CP by the Inspector-General of Police (IG-P) Ibrahim Idris on Friday, said he would not tolerate lukewarm attitude and laziness in the unit.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, until his promotion, Okoro was a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) at the PSFU, Ikoyi, a unit once headed by Mr Ibrahim Lamorde.
With his new rank, Okoro had been appointed as the CP in charge of the Police Anti-Fraud Unit, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.
He reminded the decorated officers that PSFU was known for its transparency and professionalism.
“No senior officer wants to work with lukewarm personnel. You all must make good names for yourselves in the force. You have to be known as fearless, incorruptible officers.
“Be strict, decent and very professional. Do not disappoint your families nor bring the force to disrepute. Be counted among the good eggs. The I-G has no tolerance for indiscipline and corruption.
“He does not hesitate to show the exit to officers who soil their hands. Also, the SFU has been known for its transparency and professionalism.
“As you serve your tour of duty, be sure to respect and uphold those values,” he warned. (NAN)

Kokona (Nasarawa State), June 5, 2018 (NAN) Mr Saidu Kurki, the Chairman, Kokona Local Government Council, Nasarawa State, has warned the Deputy Chairman and 11 councillors to shun corruption and other sharp practices.
Kurki issued the warning while inaugurating the newly elected council members on Tuesday in Garaku, the local government headquarters.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) conducted the Local Government election on May 26.
Kurki advised them to be transparent and accountable in discharging their duties at all times in the interest of peace and development of the area.
He said the call for transparency became imperative in order to ensure prudent management of resources to better the lives of the people of the area.
While soliciting for the support of the people to enable him and his management team succeed, the council boss promised to operate a transparent, honest and open door administration.
“I want to call on you all to be prudent, transparent and accountable in the discharge of your duties in order to justify the confidence of your people that have elected you.
“Transparency and accountability should be your watch words because corruption and injustice, among others ills, have affected our lives and the socio-economic development of the country negatively.
“Both the Executive and the Legislature need to work together as a team for the progress and development of this area,” he said.
Kurki also assured the people of his readiness to initiate good policies and programmes that have direct bearing on their lives.
He commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for creating an enabling environment for the conduct of the council poll.
The chairman enjoined the people of the area to be law abiding and live in peace irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the deputy chairman, Mr Ahmed Musa, promised to discharge their duties with the fear of God.
Musa also promised to abide by the oath of office and to carry everybody along while discharging their duties in the interest of peace and for the development of the state. (NAN)

Health association warns members against unprofessional conduct

Keffi (Nasarawa State), May 21, 2018 (NAN) The National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria, Nasarawa State chapter, has warned its members against unprofessional conduct in healthcare delivery or risk sanctions.
Mr Abdullahi Musa, the state Chairman of the association, gave the warninge on Monday during the monthly meeting of the association in Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of the state.
He said that quackery and unprofessional conducts among health workers had negatively affected the health of many Nigerians, hence the need for collective efforts to tackle them in the sector.
Musa said the meeting was to discuss issues and challenges facing members of the association with the view to addressing them to better their welfare.
“The association will continue to initiate good policies and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of its members and Nigerians at large.
“We will continue to tackle quackery in the health sector considering its negative effects on people’s health and societal development,” he said.
The chairman stressed the need for all health workers in the country to adhere strictly to their professional ethics in the interest of peace and the overall development of the health sector.
He threatened that the association would sanction any practitioner found wanting in the discharge of his/her duties in line with the ethics of the profession to serve as deterrent to others.
He advised members of the association to be disciplined, diligent, shun truancy and absenteeism for optimal productivity.
Mr Sule Thomas, former National Vice President of the association, called for unity among members in order to move the association to greater heights.
He encouraged the members to update their knowledge so as to compete favourably with their contemporaries in the interest of the health sector. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 15, 2018 (NAN) Girls and Youth Re-integration Network (GYRIN), an NGO, has cautioned against the use of doll to satisfy sexual urge, describing it as debasing to womanhood.
Miss Kehinde Awujoola, Founder of the NGO, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that GYRIN would enlighten women on the dangers of such despicable acts.
She said that such act of having sex with a doll was inimical to womanhood, adding that technology can never take the place of sexual satisfaction and companionship.
According to her, the sex doll is just a slap on womanhood because women are much more than a mere sex object.
“Sex is a satisfaction between a man and woman, that is when it is done in marriage, it is just like you having a companion you can be able to talk to soul to soul and heart to heart,” she said.
She added that sex could also make a man and a woman reach an understanding especially when it is done between the husband and the wife.
Awujoola however added that a sex doll would not be able to provide the needed satisfaction and comfort to assuage the feelings of the man and woman doing it.
She added that the only satisfaction a man or woman could derive from having sex with a doll was for the man to release while the woman satisfied her sexual urge.
Awujoola said that although she understood that not everybody would get married, notwithstanding the man and woman would always need each other for companionship.
“Even though you don’t want marriage, you will always need companion, we have older people that have gone old in their marriage and they do not even have sex any longer but they need someone to talk to,” he said.
She said that sex doll could never replace companionship and relationship, adding that there will always be a difference when you having a man or woman beside you and not a sex doll.
According to her, sex doll cannot replace the soft words while in bed, the touch, the encouragement and the feelings that you have someone by my side.
She noted that there was nothing positive about the sex doll, adding that it is the antics of the maker to engage idle mind.
There had been different types of pictures of sex doll of both male and female version circulating on the social media which has triggered concern among Nigerians.
The sex doll was said to have been made in Germany and huge amounts are required for any man or woman to have sex with the doll. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 6, 2018 (NAN) The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has warned that about 70 million girls face Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) between 2015 and 2030 across the world.
The new figures, according to a statement by the UNFPA on Tuesday in Abuja, project that the current estimates of 3.9 million girls mutilated each year will rise to 4.6 million by 2030.
This calls for urgent and massive scale-up efforts to prevent that from happening, the organisation said.
“The increase is due to projected population growth in communities that practice mutilation.
“More than 200 million women live with FGM today.
“The new figures show just how far we have to go to eliminate female genital mutilation,” said UNFPA Executive Director, Dr Natalia Kanem.
“The good news is we know what works. Greater political will, community engagement, and targeted investments are changing social norms, practices and lives.
“We need to quickly step up these efforts to make good on our collective pledge to end female genital mutilation by 2030.”
The new numbers come from a more robust method to generate age-specific risk data for mutilations.
“The data were then combined with United Nations world population estimates to project overall risk.
“The new figures now also include data from Indonesia, where the revised method captured the approximately 1 million girls facing mutilation in their first year of life.
“Although the risk of a girl being mutilated is about one-third lower than it was three decades ago, more of them will face mutilation as girls’ populations increase,’’ said Kanem.
The world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM every Feb. 6.
UNFPA, along with UNICEF, leads the largest global programme to speed-up the elimination of FGM.
“UNFPA remains committed to supporting communities in fighting to end this harmful practice, which has no place in the 21st century,” the executive director said. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Sept. 13, 2017 (NAN) Dr Joshua Ndom, the Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, Nasarawa State, has advised nurses and other health workers to respect and protect the rights of patients.
Ndom gave the advice on Wednesday at the 17th Scientific Conference/ Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Body of Heads of Nursing Departments and Principals of Schools of Nursing in Federal Institutions (BOHNDPSFI) in Keffi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference titled: “Electronics Medical Records (EMR) in a Depressed Economy: The Role of Nursing’’, was delivered by Ndom.
“The right of the patients also need to be protected at all the time in order to avoid untimely death, because patients are kings in every health sector and a healthy person can become a patient one day but that is not our prayers.
The medical director also urged hospitals in the country to key in to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system considering its enormous benefits in boosting the health data of patients.
“The choice of this conference topic is timely considering the advantages of Electronic Medical Records over manual records, hence the need for hospitals across the country to embrace it.
“So the pivotal role of Medical Record is in the centre of the cycle of the hospital and as we are aware that Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a digitise means of records as everything about a patient is done electronically.
“EMR have a lot of advantages which include reduction in medical errors, no missing of patients information, cost effectiveness, increased clinical process and reduced waste of time, among others, so hospitals should key in to the system,’’ he said.
Ndom restated his commitment to continue to key in to positive health programmes and policies that have direct bearing on the lives of the staff of the centre and patients at large.
Earlier, Mr Bala Adams, Head of Nursing Services Department, FMC, Keffi, said that the theme of the conference was meant to synergise with all the participants so as to take back the message of EMR to their various management for proper patient records.
“This is the 17 year since the body came into being. It is a forum where members learn new trends in the profession, compare notes with their colleagues on happenings in their centres and learn from each other’s life experience,” he said.
While commending Ndom for improving infrastructure and facilities in the centre, he called for its sustenance.
NAN also reports that the conference brought together participants from various federal health institutions across the country.
The participants included the Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Alhaji Faruk Abubakar, among other health experts. (NAN)

Abuja, May 3, 2017 (NAN) Dr Wisdom Ihejieto, a Medical Practitioner, in Abuja on Wednesday cautioned Nigerian men against abuse of sexual enhancement supplements and drugs.

Ihejieto, who is the Medical Director of Arewa Clinics and Maternity, Karu, a suburb of Abuja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that most of the sexual enhancement drugs have side effects on consumers.

He explained that most of these sexual enhancement supplements or drugs could cause elevation or an increase in high blood pressure for those that take them.

According to him, most people who often abuse such drugs, herbs or supplements could have palaentation condition, which he described as abnormal beating of heart constantly.

He added that such condition is dangerous to human system if not controlled.

The medical expert also noted that intake of sexual enhancement drugs could cause anxiety and when such was set in, could lead to depression.

Ihejieto stated that some sexual enhancers taken by men caused skin reactions because of the kind of components or agents used in preparing such drugs or supplements.

However, he said that such reactions vary from person to person due to differences in individuals.

“Some of these sexual enhancement supplements actually cause people to have sleepless night because of pharmaceutical agents used in preparing such drugs,” he warned.

“Some of these male enhancement that trigger erection could cause decrease in blood pressure which could result to shock.

“There was a time some men took sexual enhancement concoction known as ‘Mojo Mojo’ in South West part of the country, which resulted to death of some of them that took such herbs,” he said.

The medical expert advised that if any man must take or use such male sexual enhancement, it must be prescribed by a medical practitioner that understands the level of blood pressure of such consumer. (NAN)

Akwanga (Nasarawa State), May 3, 2017 (NAN) The Nacabs Polytechnic, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, has warned new students of the institution against cultism and other social vices or risk expulsion.

Mr David Abuluya, the Proprietor of the institution, gave the warning on Wednesday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akwanga.

Abuluya noted that cultism, examination malpractice, armed robbery, rape and other social vices had affected the education sector negatively.

He threatened that the management of the institution would not spare any student involved in acts of cultism, armed robbery, rape and other social vices.

The proprietor appealed to the Federal Government to include private tertiary institutions in the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) projects to boost the sector.

Besides, Abuluya urged the state government to support the institution with monthly grant.

“This polytechnic is known for its high academic standard and therefore will not in any way be compromised as we have all the necessary facilities on ground for effective teaching and learning.

“During our 5tth matriculation of the 229 newly admitted students, for the 2016/2017 academic session, I drew their attention to the nefarious activities of cult, armed robbery, examination malpractice, rape and other vices which have greatly affected our society.

“It is in view of this, I still want to use this opportunity to strongly advise students especially the newly matriculated students to steer clear of secret cult and other social vices and to brace up and face their studies squarely

“Any student found to be a member or join cultism will be expelled considering its negative effect to the society,’’ said the proprietor.

Abuluya therefore enjoined the students to take their studies seriously in order to excel in life as well as to complement their parent’s huge investment in their education.

He reiterated the institution’s commitment to the provision of an enabling environment for students and staff to improve on the standard of education in the country. (NAN)

Minna April 22, 2017 (NAN) Dr. Uthman Taofeek, Director, University Health Services, at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, has warned students against self-medication.

Taofeek, who spoke on Saturday in Minna, at an orientation programme for Pre-Degree and IJMB studentsto, said that self-medication was “very dangerous” and must be avoided.

The Director, who was represented by Dr. Fidelis Ajeonuma, advised the students to visit the University Health Centre for diagnosis and medication, instead of venturing into the unknown.

“Medical staff are always available and ready for you at the medical centre. They are there for you, make use of them,” he said.

He said that self medication was as dangerous as inaccurate diagnosis with treatment based on such assumptions usually riddled with deadly side effects.

“When you self-medicate, the right advice is delayed; self medication causes inaccurate dosage that leads to overdose.

“It also leads to mixing medications that are not safe to be mixed, which could result into legal costs or health concerns.

“It also leads to the abuse of drugs because one is already delving into an area he has no knowledge of,” he said.

Taofeek said that self medication had often led to severe health complications and even death. (NAN)
