NPFL: Warri Wolves suffer 3-0 defeat at Rivers United

Port Harcourt, March 18, 2020 (NAN) Visiting Warri Wolves Football Club on Wednesday suffered a 3-0 defeat in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture against Rivers United FC at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Head Coach of Warri Wolves, Evans Ogenyi, later told sportswriters after the match that his team lost the game because they did not take their chances.

“Football will always remain as football. We came here with a game plan, but it is unfortunate that things did not work out.

“So, the team that took its chances won the game and I have congratulated my professional colleagues because they took their chances.’’

He however blamed it all on anxiety, saying “ìt’s not as we couldn’t play, but out of anxiety or whatever we failed to take our chances and we lost.’’

Ogenyi however said it was not in his character to talk about officiating, and urged sportswriters, as major stakeholders, to refrain from being biased in reportage and be analytical.

“I want a situation that you will report games as you see them, because the sportswriters are partners in progress and are expected to report every area of the game for improvement.’’

In his reaction, Stanley Eguma, the Head Coach of Rivers United, said the match was a good one, especially as the outcome was as he expected.

“We actually came to win the match. We prepared very well, knowing full well that Warri Wolves have recently improved, especially in away games.

“We didn’t take them for granted. We knew that we were going to face a very tough game today (Wednesday), and that is exactly what we saw from the beginning of the game.

“They matched us head-to-head toe-to-toe and, at the end of the day, we tried to open them up because they were playing a kind of compact midfield in the first half,” he said.

Eguma stated that opening his opponents up on the flanks paved way for the first goal which spurred on his players and they capitalised on their opponents’ loopholes in the second half.

He however said “in spite of the victory, Warri Wolves as a team are not pushovers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Malachi Ohawume scored a brace for Rivers United in the 37th and 83rd minutes, while Kunle Odunlami scored in the 73rd minute.(NAN)

NPFL: Warri Wolves whip visiting MFM FC

Warri (Delta), March 16, 2020 (NAN) Warri Wolves Football Club on Sunday beat the MFM FC of Lagos 2-0 at the Warri City Stadium in a Match Day 24 fixture of the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Substitute Okoyoh Michael put the hosts ahead in the 89th minute, while Charles Atshemene scored the second goal in the first minute of added time.
A combination between Goodluck Onamado and Abu Azeez almost earned Warri Wolves the first goal in the 8th minute but the final effort was deflected by the MFM FC goalkeeper.
At the resumption of the second half, both sides changed their tactical approach to the game.
Bala Akintunde of MFM FC was issued a red card for unprofessional misconduct in the 52nd minute and that changed the game plan for the visitors.
While Warri Wolves made three substitutions, MFM FC made two in the second half.
At the post-match interview, the coach of Warri Wolves, Evans Ogenyi, commended the performance of his players.
“Our opponents came with dull defensive tactics. When we played against them in the first stanza, we ran away with a win.
“I know they will now come with anger and I told my boys to expect a difficult match.
“We created about four chances in the first half, but they were wasted because of anxiety.
“In the dressing room, we said there was the need to up our game, be patient and take our chances, especially in the attack.
“On the whole, my boys did not play to their full potential today.
“But the important thing is that we got the three maximum points because we took the two chances that came our way,” he said.
The coach said he would now approach their mid-week match against Rivers United with every seriousness.
One of the day’s scorers, Michael said he dedicated the goal to the late Chineme Martins who slumped and died on the pitch on March 8.(NAN)

Warri Wolves have functional medical facilities, official says

Warri (Delta), March 14, 2020 (NAN) Warri Wolves Football Club have in place functional medical facilities and personnel, the club’s spokesman, Azuka Chiamaka, assured on Saturday in Warri.

Chiamaka told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the club had put in place such facilities and personnel when they played continental competitions.

“Before the club was relegated and when we played on the continent, we put those things on ground as functional medical facilities was one the requirements to host matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF),’’ he said.

He assured that the club was fully ready for Sunday’s Match Day 24 clash with MFM FC in terms of provision of medical facilities and personnel as required.

NAN reports that the match scheduled for the Warri Township Stadium is a 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture.

Warri Wolves had won 1-0 on Match Day 23 when they met hosts Adamawa United FC in Gombe on Sunday.

“We are fully prepared for the match against MFM Football Club on Sunday. We have functional medical facilities on ground and a certified team of nurses.

“Aside these, we are also attached to the Central Hospital in Warri.

“We played continental competitions before relegation and this provision of functional medical facilities was one of CAF requirements.

“So, I can say authoritatively that we are ready for the match,’’ Chiamaka said.

He disclosed that the state government has also paid the players three months’ salary, a development he said has also served as a boost and motivation.

“The players know what it means to be relegated. We do not want to take chances, as we do not want to go on relegation again,’’ the club spokesman said.

NAN reports that Warri Wolves are currently placed 10th on the NPFL table with 30 points.(NAN)

Adamawa vs Warri Wolves’ NPFL match abandoned as fans attack officials

Gombe, March 9, 2020 (NAN) The Match Day 23 fixture between Adamawa United Football Club of Yola and Warri Wolves in the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) was abandoned on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match played at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe was abandoned after an assault on match officials.

The attack came immediately the centre referee ended the match’s first half.

Warri Wolves were leading by a lone goal scored by Abu Azeez in the 21st minute of the match when fans of the home team ran into the field of play.

One of the fans attacked the centre referee with a catapult while others hit him with their fist before policemen quickly intervened, pushing back the fans from the field of play.

The match officials and the match’s referees assessor who rushed into the field of play were quickly surrounded by policemen to protect them.

The officials were confined to the centre of the pitch, where they were making calls, ostensibly to give situation reports to officials of the Abuja-based League Management Company (LMC).

NAN also reports that after waiting for over 70 minutes on the field of play, two police vans later drove into the field of play to convey the officials out of the stadium.

Warri Wolves’ team bus was also driven into the field of play to take away the visiting team and their officials under heavy security escort.

Journalists, especially cameramen, were also attacked by the fans who made attempts to destroy video and other recordings of the development.(NAN)

NNL Super 4 play-off: Akwa Starlets stun 3SC 3-0

Abuja, July 22, 2019 (NAN) 3SC  of Ibadan on Monday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, saw their hope of making the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 4 dashed by Akwa Starlets FC of Uyo.

The Uyo-based team advanced to the NNL Super 4 by thrashing 3SC 3-0.

At the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi, Adamawa United defeated FRSC FC  2-1, while Jigawa Golden Stars of Hadeija thrashed NAF FC of Abuja 3-1 at the Jos Township Stadium.

In the other Southern Conference fixtures, Warri Wolves beat Dynamite FC of Benin 5-3 on penalties at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, to advance after nothing could separate both teams after 90 minutes.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that with their victories, Adamawa United, Jigawa Golden Stars, Warri Wolves and Akwa Starlets have now qualified for the NNL Super 4 tournament.

The Super 4 tournament is scheduled for July 31 to Aug. 3 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The four clubs have also automatically qualified for the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Lawrence Katken, NNL’s Chief Operating Officer, told NAN after the Super 4 play-off that preliminary reports from the four venues indicated that the games went on smoothly. (NAN)
