Manchester United secure second place with West Ham draw

London, May 10, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United secured the point they needed to finish second in the Premier League with a dull 0-0 draw at West Ham United on Thursday.

There were few chances in a tepid first half, though Alexis Sanchez forced a good save from West Ham keeper Adrian.

Marko Arnautovic looked the most likely West Ham player to make a breakthrough.

Paul Pogba curled a couple of shots narrowly wide for Manchester United.

The France midfielder was booked in the dying stages for kicking out at West Ham’s Mark Noble, who was also shown a yellow card as tempers frayed.

Manchester United, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, moved four points clear of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur with one league game left.

They will play Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 19.

West Ham are 15th in the table.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was pleased to secure second place.

“We are the second best team in the Premier League, a fantastic competition with lots of good teams with six teams trying to finish first,” he told the BBC.

“We came second, I am not totally happy that is not my nature. But since the moment we felt it was impossible to finish first we had the target to finish second and it is done today.

“I am not critical of the performance at all. In the 80th minute we know that a point was enough so we start thinking about that and we let the game go.”

West Ham manager David Moyes was happy to draw with his former club.

“A good point for us,” he said. “Our boys showed a great attitude after getting safe at the weekend.

“We have conceded a lot of goals this season so a clean sheet is great. We have done the job we came to do – we are not relegated.” (Reuters/NAN)

Wenger’s Arsenal swansong starts with win over West Ham

London, April 22, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Arsenal scored three goals in the final eight minutes as manager Arsene Wenger marked his penultimate home English Premier League match in charge.

Wenger’s side ended the day with a crushing 4-1 win over West Ham United in a London derby at the Emirates on Saturday.

Defender Nacho Monreal put Arsenal ahead six minutes into the second half when he fired low past Joe Hart at a corner kick to bring the match to life after a dull first half.

Marko Arnautovic equalised 13 minutes later when substitute midfielder Manuel Lanzini fed him on the left and the striker shot past the diving David Ospina into the bottom far corner.

Aaron Ramsey put Arsenal ahead again in the 82nd minute.

This was when a mistake in the Hammers defence allowed his effort from the left edge of the box to sail into the far side of Hart’s net.

Minutes later, Alexandre Lacazette added the third and fourth goals.

Hart had previously kept West Ham in the match with diving saves from Xhaka and Danny Wellbeck, but Arsenal climbed within six points of fifth-placed Chelsea on 57.

West Ham, on the other hand, remain in relegation trouble six points above the drop zone on 35. (Reuters/NAN)

West Ham United hand out 5 life bans over stadium trouble

London, March 22, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) West Ham United issued lifetime bans to five individuals on Thursday for invading the pitch at the London Stadium during their 3-0 English Premier League defeat by Burnley earlier this month.

Disgruntled supporters invaded the pitch during the club’s 14th league defeat of the season, while verbal abuse and coins were hurled at owners David Sullivan and David Gold.

The club said in a statement: “West Ham United can confirm that swift and decisive action has been taken against a number of spectators who breached stadium regulations or were found to have committed acts of severe violence and physical aggression at our recent Premier League match against Burnley.”

An unspecified number of supporters have also been banned for life.

“… For violently throwing coins or objects with intent to injure or harm on the bridge directly in front of the Directors’ Box,” the club added.

West Ham said the investigation into the incidents remained ongoing and that the club expected to issue further bans before their next home game against Southampton on March 31.

The club are two points above the relegation zone in 17th place on the table.(Reuters/NAN)
