Abuja, Nov. 21, 2018 (NAN) The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) on Thursday said the 2018 International Women Development Summit would expose and showcase indigenous products and services to the world.
The National President of the council, Mrs Gloria Shoda, told newsmen in Abuja that women within and outside FCT should take advantage of the programme by participating actively.
Shoda said that the women participation would help to showcase indigenous products and services.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-day summit is convened by Prime Unique Women Initiative, an NGO, and powered by Skyehigh Security Safety and Skills in conjunction with the NCWS.
Shoda said the event has been slated for Nov. 26 to Nov. 28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The president said that the event was designed to create awareness on government policy as it concerns women, children, family and personal security.
Shoda described women as the fulcrum of micro and small entreprises in the Nigerian economy and Africa in general.
According to her, the summit thus takes cognisance of the various challenges faced by Nigerian women in the areas of business, investment, security, socio-economic growth and sustainability.
Solutions would be proffered to mitigate these problems, she said.
The Convener of the summit, Dr Folake Yobah of the Prime Unique Women Initiative, an NGO, said the organisers and their partners have strategically put together successful local and international resource persons, entrepreneurs and professionals from the public and private sectors.
Yobah assured that the resource persons would bring their wealth of experience and expertise to bear for immense benefit of participants and stakeholders.
She said the summit is themed: ‘Strategic Women Development for Sustainable National Growth and Security.’ (NAN)

Abuja, Sept. 7, 2018 (NAN) The National President, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Mrs Gloria Shoda, on Friday advised Nigerian women to be united for the development of the country.
Shoda gave the advised in Abuja at the 60th Anniversary of the council and National Summit on Sustainable Development Goals with the theme: The change Leadership and Gender Balance.
“Let me remind Nigerian women that the cloud of slur and neglect of implementation of gender affirmative agreements and treaties are disruptive war fares made to dis-empower and entrap us perpetually on the disadvantage end.
“We must use whatever positions we find ourselves to refine our positive acumen, heritage of skills, tenacity and ability to recreate the obvious image of servitude in every woman.
“We must, very strongly desist from showing scant regard for each other and conspiring against ourselves,’’ she said.
Shoda said that the council would continue to speak loud on issues of conflict resolution among women.
She said the council was also calling for a bill for an act to amend the Federal Character Commission to give married women the option choice of preferred indigeneship.
Earlier, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sustainable Development Goals said Nigeria was committed to gender concerns.
She said concerted efforts must be made to ensure gender equality and women empowerment are at the centre stage of development in order to advance the Agenda 2030. (NAN)

Women demand special budgetary allocation for empowerment

Wase (Plateau), June 22, 2018 (NAN) Women from various communities in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau have called for special funding for women empowerment programmes in the area.
They made the request through findings of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) organised by the United Nations Women Mentors as part of their needs assessment for the production of the second Local Action Plan (LAP).
The women asked for budgetary allocation to organise activities that would facilitate their empowerment.
Speaking at the launch of the LAP on Friday, Mrs Lantana Abdullahi, the Lead UN Women Mentor of Wase local government, said the FGD was conducted in the four districts of Wase.
“We conducted the research in Wase, Bashar, Lamba and Kadarko districts.
“The FGDs reveal that women want a gender responsive budget; punishment for perpetrators of gender based violence; quick response to early warning signals of conflicts and a well equipped trauma centre,’’ she said.
Abdullahi said that the women also pleaded for government intervention for the rehabilitation and reintegration of displaced persons through conflicts and more security measures to stem the entrance of emerging terrorist groups.
She explained that the research was conducted to ensure the peculiarities of the area was considered in the production of the LAP on United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR), which hinges on gender parity at all levels of decision making.
Mrs Hassana Ayika, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social development, commended Wase for been one of the first areas to launch its first LAP in 2011 in Plateau and across the country.
She said the resolution strives to strengthen women’s role in conflict prevention and peace building whilst militating the impact of conflict on women and girls.
“UNSCR 1325 is premised on findings that women suffer most during conflicts, thus when engaged in security and peace building processes, peaceful coexistence devoid of conflict is guaranteed,’’ the scribe said.
On her part, Mrs Amina Turaki, the Director of Personnel Management of Wase local government, pledged the council’s support for the implementation of the LAP, urging men to encourage women to contest in elections.
“We cannot contest in elections and participate in other forms of governance without the support of our men.
“The girl child education is critical to ensure she participates in decision making processes at all levels,’’ she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Plateau launched its State Action Plan in November 2017.
In line with that Mangu, Riyom, Jos North and Wase local government areas were selected to produce their LAPs to facilitate grassroots participation.
The plans have also been translated in local languages of the areas, and in Braille and audio for the blind and the hearing impaired. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 14, 2018 (NAN) Mrs Mary Ekpere-Eta, the Director-General, National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), has called on the National Assembly to increase the funding allocations to boost women empowerment in the country.
She made the appeal while receiving the House of House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development on Wednesday in Abuja.
Ekpere-Eta solicited for increased funding especially in skill acquisition for women.
The director-general said the empowerment of women would eliminate social vices among youths and promote self reliance.
The Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Stella Ngwu, who led her colleagues, expressed satisfaction with the level of work being undertaken by the centre.
Ngwu noted that in spite of limited resources the centre had been able to achieve its mandate.
“We are here for an oversight function with the Women Development Centre; we want to know what the centre was able to do with their 2017 budget so that we know how to appropriate money for 2018.
“We were told that 50 per cent was released in 2017, even with the 50 per cent they got they have not done badly at all.
“We are satisfied with what we saw, especially with the Cancer diagnosis centre, Creche and some of the projects the contractors are yet to start,” she said.
However, the chairman said the committee would return in two weeks for more engagement. (NAN)

Garaku (Nasarawa State), Oct.29, 2017 (NAN) Some rural women in Nasarawa State have appealed to the Federal and State Governments to provide free healthcare services and soft loans to improve their lives.

The women made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday from their respective communities in Garaku, Kokona Local Government Area.

They said that improving basic amenities in their communities would go a long way in improving their standard of living and life span thereby contributing positively to overall development of the state and country.

They noted that the provision of free health facilities in the rural areas would also reduce mother and child mortality rate in the country.

The women further appealed to the federal and state governments to provide functional boreholes in rural areas to alleviate their sufferings while searching for water.

They said most of them depend mainly on stream water for drinking and domestic use which is unhealthy.

The women also advocated for free interest or soft agricultural and economic loans in order to fight poverty, unemployment as well boost agricultural production in the country.

Mrs Hajara Abdullahi, a resident of Agwada in Kokona Local Government Area, said that lack of standard health facilities in the area has affected the health status and standard of living of women negatively.

“Everybody is aware that rural women depend on natural resources and agriculture for their livelihoods, as more than half of Nigeria’s population live in the rural area.

“Everybody is also aware that the rural areas have been neglected by governments of all kind in terms of quality infrastructure.

“How many rural areas have standard schools, hospitals, water supply and electricity?

“The absence of these infrastructural facilities has affected our lives and the socio-economic development at the grassroots and the country at large.

“It is in view of this I appeal to government at all levels to provide social amenities especially free health facilities in rural areas in order to better our living,” she said.

Another woman in Amba community, Kokona LGA of the state, Mrs Janet Audu, also called on government to give adequate attention to rural development especially in the provision of standard health facilities and water supply.

“The water in our community is stinking and causing diseases as most women leave their houses early in the morning in search of drinking water especially during the dry season.

“I am appealing to the government at all levels to provide us with free and standard health facilities and potable water supply in order to improve our standard of living,’’ she said.(NAN)
