 Wolves come from behind to beat hosts Spurs 3-2

London, March 1, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Wily striker Raul Jimenez struck a superb 73rd minute winner as Wolverhampton Wanderers twice came back from a goal down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 on Sunday.

The win helped them to leap-frog Spurs into sixth place in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) table.

Steven Bergwijn gave Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, who lost 2-1 to Chelsea last week, the lead in the 13th minute.

He slammed home a rebound to spare the blushes of Dele Ali, whose weak shot with the goal at his mercy was parried by Rui Patricio.

The visitors struck back 14 minutes later through Irish international Matt Doherty, who took advantage of some poor defending to score after Spurs failed to clear Ruben Vinagre’s cross.

Serge Aurier restored the lead just before halftime, collecting the ball just inside the penalty box before curling a sublime left foot shot inside the far post.

But, again, Wolves came back as Diogo Jota scored from close range in the 57th minute.

With Spurs striker Ali spurning several decent chances, Jota then set up Jimenez for the winner.

Jota slid the ball into his path in the 73rd minute for Jimenez to cut swiftly inside before curling a sweet left foot strike into the net.

The win lifts Wolves into sixth spot with 42 points after 28 games, just behind Manchester United on goal difference, while Spurs slip to seventh, two points behind Wolves.

With Manchester City set to be banned from the UEFA Champions League for breaching UEFA’s financial rules, Wolves striker Jimenez said he and his team mates were hopeful.

He said they were setting their sights on a spot in Europe’s premier club competition.

“This is our spirit, it’s what characterises us. We fight to the end in every game, keep going and keep winning. We’re proud of this game and we have to keep going to achieve more goals, we are looking at top five” he said.

For Mourinho, the defeat makes the task of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League that little bit more difficult.

But he did not see his side as being second-best against Wolves.

“They are so powerful on the counter-attack,” he told a news conference. “We tried different solutions. It worked in a way because we scored two goals.

“I think it’s unfair. The result, totally unfair,” Mourinho added, before calling for more fight from his players.

“We don’t have that aggression. We are too good, too nice. That was maybe the only difference between the teams.”(Reuters/NAN)

Wolverhampton (UK), Nov. 10, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Sunday’s Midlands derby with goals from Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez taking them into the top eight in the Premier League.

It was a difficult afternoon for Villa from the moment they lost goalkeeper Jed Steer to injury after only five minutes.

Wolves dominated and the only surprise was it took them until nearly halftime to go ahead, Neves giving replacement keeper Orjan Nyland no chance with a thumping drive.

Another injury for Villa led to left back Matt Targett being replaced before the interval but the visitors showed plenty of endeavour after the break to stay in the game.

Villa even threatened to equalise on the odd occasions but Wolves effectively sealed the points when Jimenez fired into the corner after good work by the dangerous Adama Traore.
There was some consolation for Villa when Trezeguet halved the deficit in stoppage time but it was too late.

Wolves’s first Premier League win over Villa for eight years lifted them to 16 points from 12 games while Villa remain fourth from bottom with 11 points. (Reuters/NAN)

Chelsea’s Abraham hits hat-trick in 5-2 win over Wolves

Wolverhampton (UK), Sept. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) In-form Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham scored a superb hat-trick as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Visiting Chelsea thus spoiled the home side’s celebration of the 130th anniversary of their Molineux Stadium.

The game bursted into life just past the half-hour mark when Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori’s dipping drive from outside the box wrong-footed Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio and flew into the net.

Abraham then struck his first goal three minutes later, making the most of the advantage granted by referee Graham Scott to take a touch and swivel before firing home.
He headed a second before halftime to send his side into the break 3-0 up.

The Chelsea academy product, who has spent spells on loan at Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa, completed his hat-trick 11 minutes into the second half before limping off.

He was replaced by Michy Batshuayi in the 77th minute.

Wolves pulled a goal back in the 69th when Romain Saiss’s header went in off Abraham for an own goal and striker Patrick Cutrone bundled home another in the 85th.
But Mason Mount fired home Chelsea’s fifth to complete the rout five minutes after Cutrone’s goal.

Chelsea, who host Liverpool next week, are up to sixth on eight points while Wolves, who visit Crystal Palace looking for their first win of the season, are 19th on three points. (Reuters/NAN)
