Zaria (Kaduna State), March 12, 2020 (NAN)The absence of a police witness on Thursday stalled the trial of two juveniles, charged with criminal intimidation and stealing.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Yau Garba, prayed the court for an adjournment to produce his witness.

The police charged the 17-year-old juveniles with alleged criminal conspiracy, house breaking, house trespass and intimidation contrary to sections 58, 327, 377, 270 and 332 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Laws.

Magistrate Ruqayya-Ummi Ahmed, relying on Section 255 of the Evidence Act, ordered the  Investigating Police Officer, who is the second prosecution witness to appear and give evidence on March 19.

NAN reports that on March 5, a witness, Alhaji Yahaya Ahmed of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Kaduna State, identified the juveniles as those who broke into his house and robbed him. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State) Feb. 28, 2020 (NAN) The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria on Friday matriculated 10,000 students for the 2019/2020 academic session with a call for them to refrain from associating with unapproved groups.

Prof. Ibrahim Garba, Vice Chancellor of the University gave the advice during the matriculation ceremony in Zaria.

Garba said that over 40,000 UTME and direct entry applications were received by the institution for the academic session, out of which only 10,000 applications were considered.

“You should therefore consider yourself as one of the lucky students,” he said.

The vice chancellor said that the ceremony was to formally initiate the students into the university community, adding that “by this process you have been formally accepted into the university rules.’’

Garba noted that university education was exciting, and the purpose was to acquire knowledge and skills to prepare one for a successful life and be a good citizen.

He, however, said the process of acquiring university education required peace, stability and conducive environment.

He said an important challenge was to provide and maintain peaceful atmosphere that would be conducive for teaching, learning and good character breeding.

The vice chancellor, therefore, urged the students to shun examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, indecent dressing and all forms of antisocial behavior.

“As fresh students you should know that academic programmes in the university have time frame within which it must be completed.

“Students who cannot complete his study within the maximum period allowed due to poor performance or unacceptable behavior is compelled by the university rules to withdraw,” he said

Meanwhile, Alhaji Lado Suleja, member representing Suleja, Tafa and Gurara Federal Constituency at the National Assembly told journalists that the new students should use the opportunity wisely.

Suleja who was admitted to study public administration, said it was taxing to combine legislation and studies at the university but he would strive to merge the two.(NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), Sep. 9, 2019 (NAN) An NGO, PMB Daniel Memorial Foundation says it will build a 200-bed capacity hospital to cater for the less-privileged, restitutes and children under five years in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the foundation would also build a College of Health Technology for the training of medical and health personnel.

The foundation disclosed this when its members paid a courtesy visit on the Emir of Zazzau, Dr Shehu Idris, in his palace in Zaria, on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation, the leaders of the delegation, Mrs Ishinat Rafatu and Mr Abdulqadir Bala-Isa, said the essence of establishing the hospital was to cater for the health needs of indigent citizens.

They said while the hospital provides medical services to the public, a College of Health Technology would also be established for the training of hospital’s medical and health personnel.

The leaders described the proposal as path to producing qualified medical and health personnel for improved healthcare services not only to the people of Zaria and the entire Zazzau Emirate, but also the entire state and beyond.

They appreciated the warm reception accorded them by the Emir, assuring that the NGO would ever remain grateful to the gigantic efforts of the monarch towards the actualisation of the hospital.

They said the essence of the visit was to seek royal blessing, support and approval of the first class traditional ruler to extend a helping hand to the less-privileged in his domain.

According to them, the NGO had visited Gambo Sawaba Hospital where they settled hospital bills for some less-privileged patients, donated food items, toiletries and other basic needs of patients.

Responding, the Emir, who spoke through the Chiroman Shantalin Zazzau, Alhaji Sani Ladan, thanked the foundation for the visit and their efforts to assist the less-privileged in the society.

He promised to write a special letter of commendation to the founder of the foundation, saying that the effort was the first of its kind in the history of the emirate.

The foundation also visited the Chairman, Zaria Local Government Council, Alhaji Aliyu Idris-Ibrahim, to thank the council for donating land for the construction of the hospital and school.

Receiving the leaders of the NGO, the Chairman, who was represented by his deputy, Imam Aliyu At-Tukuri, urged others to emulate the group in giving hope to the less privileged. (NAN)

Door-to-door campaign for President Buhari begins in Zaria

Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 13, 2019 (NAN) Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim, the Chairman, Zaria Local Government Council, Kaduna State, on Sunday says the council has began the door-to-door campaign for re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Nasiru el-Rufa’i of the state.

He disclosed this during the presentation of projects certificates to different contractors at various units in Dutsen-Abba ward of Zaria Local Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chairman had presented the contractors to community leaders of each unit to enable the community to monitor and follow-up for proper execution of the projects.

NAN also reports that the exercise signaled the take-off of the projects by the contractors.

Ibrahim said the door-to-door campaign exercise initiated by the council was meant to attract bulk votes for the incumbent president, the governor as well as APC candidates in other elective positions.

He enjoined both party leaders and individual party members at respective unit levels to continue with the do-to-do campaign to pave way for 100 per cent victory of the party at all levels.

While appealing for collective votes from all electorate, the chairman assured that victory for Buhari and el-Rufa’i was a victory for all Nigerians, hence the need for all to join the vanguard train.

Idris said: “During our electioneering campaign, we made some promises in different wards and by the grace of Almighty Allah we are here to fulfill the promise.

“Almighty Allah in His infinite mercies has enable us make adequate provision for the award of many important contracts; we have been able to curtail the usual siphoning of money from the treasury.”

Ibrahim charged the contractors to ensure speedy completion of the projects in a qualitative manner.

“I want to use this medium to call on our people to be vigilant by supervising the work and report to the council any contractor doing the wrong thing because we cannot be everywhere.

“I want to assure our people that we will ensure prudent management of their resources, together we shall move Zaria local government to the next level of development,” he assured.

Ibrahim recalled that the previous administration of the state denied the council chairmen the opportunity to serve people better.

He, however, appreciated el-Rufa’i for giving local councils the freedom and autonomy to execute meaningful projects that have direct bearing on the lives of common people.

The APC chairman in Zaria Local Government, Alhaji Abdu Ringo, urged the benefiting communities to cooperate with the contractors to ensure speedy completion and quality jobs.

The party chairman also appealed to the electorate to vote APC candidates at all levels, assuring that it is the only option to sustain the democratic dividends being enjoyed in their areas.

In their separate responses, the community leaders appreciated Zaria local government council for fulfilling its campaign promises.

The community leaders promised to disappoint re-elect Buhari, whom they described as honest, promising and hope for the Nigerian masses.

NAN also reports that the projects included construction of primary schools, construction of culverts and electrification among others. (NAN)

NMS Zaria introduces “sports week’’ to harness more talents

Zaria (Kaduna State), March 29, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Military School (NMS) in Zaria has introduced a “Sports Week’’ to hold competitions which will help it to harness more talents for the Nigerian Army.

The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Depot and NMS, Capt. Haruna Mohammed-Sani, disclosed this in a statement in Zaria, Kaduna State on Thursday.

Mohammed-Sani said the maiden edition of the event would begin on Saturday and end on Wednesday.

“The opening ceremony will take place at the NMS Physical Training Ground where the participating boys will compete in several sports activities.

“The event which forms the basis for 2017/2018 extra-curricular activities among the training companies was designed to identify and harvest talents for the Nigerian Army,” he said.

Mohammed-Sani said the Commandant of Depot, Maj.-Gen. Victor Okwudili-Ezugwu, was expected to be the Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony.

“The Commandant, Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Air Vice Marshal Lawal Shitu-Alao, is also expected to be the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony,’’ he said.(NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 28, 2018 (NAN) Rep. Abbas Tajuddeen (APC-Zaria) has constructed and donated a Primary Healthcare Centre to Kwarbai community in Zaria city of Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the health facility was equipped with hospital beds, drugs, health personnel, doctor’s residence, an ambulance and a motorised solar borehole.

NAN also reports that the healthcare centre will be supervised by the Leprosy and Tuberculosis Centre, Saye, Zaria, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government and the lawmaker.

Speaking at the formal handing-over of the facility to the management of Leprosy and Tuberculosis Centre in Zaria on Sunday, Tajuddeen said the gesture was meant to enhance community access to healthcare services.

The lawmaker, who did not disclose the amount spent on the structure, promised to continually assist his constituents in the areas of education, health, sports, religion and other spheres of life.

Tajuddeen lamented that the facility was earlier handed-over to Zaria Local Government Council but the council was unable to manage it.

According to him, this is what influenced his decision to seek for assistance and collaboration with the Leprosy Centre and Kaduna state government to enable Kwarbai community maximally benefit from the facility.

The legislator observed that there was no need for politicians to bring project(s) that would not be beneficial to the electorate which would not be put to use.

“I always pray, if a project will not be of benefit to my people, I better leave it at all, because, there is no need for citing a project just for political reasons.

“Some of our politicians do sponsor project(s), commission and organise ceremonies for inauguration but after sometimes the place will be abandoned.

“This is indeed a waist of public fund, this is one of the reasons that we strive hard to ensure that this facility extends the needed healthcare services to Kwarbai community through collaborative efforts,” he said.

Dr Labaran Shehu, the Principal, Leprosy and Tuberculosis Centre, Zaria, said it was not the first community healthcare facility being managed by the centre.

“This is the third facility we are going to be running in order to extend a hand of friendship to the neighbouring communities.

“The main duty of our centre is treatment of Tuberculosis, Leprosy and HIV/AIDS, but as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari that the hospital shouldn’t restrict itself to that alone, it should expand.

“That’s why we extend services to some hospitals close to us including our main clinic at Saye, a community healthcare at Magume and now Kwarbai after following due processes and got approval from the Federal Government,” he said.

Shehu said the centre would provide the new healthcare facility with health personnel who would be working 12 hours, from morning to sunset.

“This is because any hospital without blood bank will be a risk to receive women on delivery except those without any problem.

“However, we have a brand new ambulance courtesy of the member, in case of anything, patients can be referred to our main clinic at Saye or they can be taken to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika or Wusasa.

“This facility will be providing observation and treatment of malaria, typhoid and antenatal care, among others, so as to give the surrounding communities the needed health assistance.

“Apart from that, Tuberculosis and HIV drugs will be supplied to the facility, so that people from this community need not to go to Saye for treatment of Tuberculosis and HIV,” he assured. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 9, 2018 (NAN) A messenger, Malam Abubakar Shu’aibu, 45, of Government Secondary School, Aminu Marmara, Sabongari Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday slumped into coma shortly after receiving his sack letter.
A credible witness confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the area on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.
The source said the incident happened Tuesday morning shortly after the affected person received his sack letter.
He said that the messenger had served the state for about 11 years.
“We reported to work this morning and Abubakar Shu’aibu was invited to Zonal Education Office; on reaching there, they served him with a sack letter.
“When he returned to the school, he showed us the letter and we all advised him to see it as an act of God Almighty as nothing happens to a person without the consent of God.
“He also admitted that that’s what God had destined for him, but all of a sudden, the man collapsed and went into coma instantly.
“We acted very fast by giving him a first aid. We took him up and lie him down on the floor, fanning him continuously and he gradually regained his consciousness,’’ he said.
The source added that teachers present at the scene of the incident converged and took a decision to mobilise something from their salary to empower him economically.
The source also said that the teachers begged the school principal, Malam Sa’idu Liman-Umar, to consider employing the sacked messenger as a temporary worker to cushion the effect for the meantime.
“The principal agreed to render possible assistance as the case may be,’’ said the source.
Officials in the Zonal Education Office in Zaria declined comment, saying that they were not directed to speak to the press.
Also the state Ministry of Education and the state Government is yet to react to the development.
NAN recalls that Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i had directed that all messengers, cleaners and drivers who spent 10 years in service without obtaining at least a Diploma or NCE should be sacked. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), June 7, 2017 (NAN) The Chediya Chief Magistrates’ Court in Zaria, Kaduna State, has adjourned till July 4, continuation of hearing in the case of 53 accused persons arrested for gay marriage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the police in Zaria had on April 18 charged the accused persons for conspiracy, unlawful assembly and belonging to a gang of unlawful society.

The offences contravened sections 97, 100 and 197(a) of Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

At the proceeding, the prosecutor, Sgt. Mannir Nasir, told the court that at the last sitting, the accused persons (numbers 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 20, 21, 26 and 54) were in court.

Nasir then applied for a bench warrant and a separate trial of accused person number 2, 3, 9, 12, 14, 20, 21, 26 and 54 under Section 259 of the criminal procedure code.

Lead counsel to the accused persons, Mr Kimi Appah from TS, a Kaduna-based NGO, argued against the bench warrant.

He, however, did not object to the second application for a separate trial.

The court ruled that counsel to the accused neither gave any point of law nor cogent reason in view of the application by the prosecutor.

“The court hereby granted and summoned the surety to come to the court and show cause why accused persons were not in court.

“The court therefore granted the application by the prosecutor for a separate trial under Section 259 of the CPC,” the court said.

After the cross-examining Sgt. Abdul-Aziz Mohammed, one of the witnesses, Appah filed an oral application for a definite hearing to facilitate accelerated hearing.

The prosecutor, however, objected to the application, saying most of the witnesses were policemen and may be officially engaged elsewhere.

He then applied for continuation of hearing and asked for another date.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Auwal Musa-Aliyu, adjourned the case till July 4, for continuation of hearing. (NAN)

Zaria (Kaduna State), May 26, 2017 (NAN) Residents of Zaria and its environs have lauded Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State for completing the Zaria water project.

The project has suffered neglect and under funding for over 28 years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the project started in 1988 during the tenure of late Brig-Gen. Tanko Ayuba as military governor of the state.

About nine successive governors were unable to actualise the project, until the present administration.

Speaking in separate interviews, the residents expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project.

A resident of Zaria-city, Malam Ibrahim Mohammed, said his joy know no bounds over the completion of the project.

He cited areas like Anguwan Iya, Kan Fage, Limanci, Kusfa, Marmara, Anguwan Karfe, Anguwan Nufawa, Salmanduna, Anguwan Bishar and Kofar Gayan Low-Cost, among others, as the worst hit by water scarcity.

“I can authoritatively tell you that an adult of 25 years of age cannot tell anything about tap water, because he or she knew nothing about it.

“This is because tap water had not been running in these areas for over 25 years now.

“If is true that this project is completed and will be commissioned tomorrow, this government had done everything for us,” Mohammed said.

Another resident of the area, Malam Mohammed Shamsuddeen, said: “I have a brother who is now about 30 years of age but could not actually tell where our tap is.

“As I am talking to you now, our children do not know tap water, they can only talk about borehole,” he said.

Shamsuddeen said their families used to go as far as five kilometres to fetch water for domestic use.

On his part, Mr Mohammed Dalhatu, also from Zaria-city, appreciated the efforts of the present administration, saying “it is just like a dream’’.

Narrating the difficulties experienced by residents, Dalhatu said their children sometimes missed their school just because of fetching water.

He prayed God Almighty to enable them witness the actualisation of the project and benefit from it.

Similarly, a housewife, Hajiya Hadiza Hassan of Sabongari, said the joy was not only for the people of Zaria city alone but for the entire people of Zazzau emirate.

She noted that their experience of water scarcity for more than 10 years now would now become history. (NAN)
