Lagos, Feb. 16, 2017 (NAN) A 19-year-old tailor, Adeyemi Olaifa, was arraigned in Lagos on Thursday over alleged burglary and escape from police custody.
Olaifa is facing a three-count charge of burglary, theft and escape from police custody before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court.
The Prosecutor, ASP Richard Odigie, told the court that the accused on Feb. 9 burgled the apartment of Basirat Bakare at Smith St., Apanitira, Lagos Island.
He said the accused broke into the apartment through the ceiling and stole valuables worth N100,000.
Odigie said that the housekeeper sighted the accused and raised alarm and Olaifa was arrested.
According to the prosecutor, the accused had on May 16, 2016 escaped from Adeniji Adele Central Police Station.
“The accused, a habitual criminal, committed another crime, he was caught and brought to the station where he was immediately identified,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 106 (b), 285 and 305 (c) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 106 stipulates seven years imprisonment for escape from lawful custody while Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for theft.
Similarly, Section 305 provides seven years imprisonment for housebreaking.
The accused pleaded guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs F.O Ikobayo, granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case to March 15 for mention. (NAN)
