Osogbo, April 6, 2023 (NAN)  The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists in Osun against reckless driving that could lead to accidents and fatalities during the Easter and Eid-el-fitr celebrations.

The Corps Marshal of the organisation, Mr Dauda Biu, represented by his Deputy Corps Commander, Mrs Honey Ogundayo, gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of an Easter rally held in Osogbo on Thursday.

The theme of the rally is “Driving tired is as dangerous as driving drunk: Avoid night trips, worn out tyres and top speed” .

He said that the corps had embarked on continuous sensitisation and public enlightenment of road users across the country due to heavy vehicular movements during festive seasons.

“This and many other cogent factors necessitated the organisation of this mega campaign to enlighten stakeholders.

“Also, the event will help all road users, including passengers, on how to use the roads safely, so as to reduce road traffic fatalities by 15 per cent,” Biu said.

According to him, the corps interface with transport unions and other road users shows that even though we have not achieved our set target of realising zero crash on our roads through aggressive public enlightenment campaigns , a lot is still expected.

“We are confident that with the growing synergy between FRSC and the various unions, our targets are not far from reach.”

Biu further charged road users to comply with established laws by avoiding speed, drunk driving, overloading, not using of seatbelts and wrongful overtaking.

He called on motorists to maintain lane discipline at all times, avoid use of mobile phones, while driving.

In an address of welcome , the State Sector Commander, Mr Henry Benamesia, thanked the corps marshal for the crusade meant to ensure that lives and property of people were saved during and after the festive seasons.

Benamesia said the lives of every road user are important to the corps, adding that it was paramount to keep vehicles in proper condition before any journey.

He advised drivers to always avoid night travels because of low visibility and to also ensure that they checked their vehicles before embarking on any long journeys.

He further advised drivers to avoid buying second hand tyres and other fake motor parts, which could lead to an eventuality and loss of lives.

He said that the command would not relent in ensuring that accidents were drastically reduced, especially at corridors, where such menace were common in the state.

Earlier, the state Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Osogbo 1, Mr Suleiman Yusuf, thanked the FRSC boss for his relentless efforts toward sensitising his union members on the dangers associated with reckless driving.

Yusuf, represented by Mr Suleiman Adeniyi, promised that the union would ensure full compliance with all road safety regulations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng )
