Adopt your host communities as new homes, Gov. Ugwuanyi tells corps members

Enugu, May 9, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has appealed to corps members posted to the state for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to adopt their host communities as new homes.
Ugwuanyi, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Mr Uwakwe Azikiwe made the appeal in Enugu on Wednesday during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘A’ NYSC orientation course.
The governor said that the appeal was necessary in order to encourage the corps members to put in their best in service to their fatherland.
He said that the major objective of the NYSC was to promote unity and integration among the peoples of the country through the scheme.
“I, therefore, urge you to pursue the realisation of this goal with fervor, patriotism and humility by regarding your host communities as your homes and join in contributing to their development.
“You must, therefore, accept your posting in good faith and regard it as a call to duty in the service of your fatherland,” he said.
Ugwuanyi urged them to utilise the skills acquired in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) scheme for the benefit of the state and the nation by being job creators.
The governor said that the state government would continue to create the enabling environment for them to discharge their responsibilities.
He said that the state allowances of corps members posted in the state establishments would always be paid as and when due.
“I want to assure you that you are safe in any part of the state you are posted to,” he said.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Ikaka said that a total of 2,268 corps members were deployed to the state for the orientation course.
Ikaka said that the corps members adapted well in the course of the orientation and contributed to the successful administration of programmes in the camp.
The state coordinator assured the corps members that their security was first charge by agencies of the state and Federal Government.
“You should rest assured that the South East zone is very peaceful. Nevertheless, the Federal and State Governments have given instructions to law enforcement agencies to keep an eagle eye watch over you,” he said.
Ikaka commended the state government for the concern it had shown in the development of infrastructure at the orientation camp.
“The promise made by the governor to help in expanding the water project and to restore light to the camp and the adjoining communities is receiving prompt attention.
“I must say that the support the scheme is enjoying from the state government is highly encouraging.
“We are optimistic that the government will soon redeem the promise of providing operational vehicles to the state secretariat, complete the new female hostel and renovate the dilapidated ones,” he said.
He also appealed to the state government to assist in the completion of the perimeter fence of the camp. (NAN)
