AMAC commences distribution of free fertiliser to farmers

Abuja, April 26,2018(NAN) The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Alhaji Abdullahi Candido on Thursday in Abuja commenced the distribution of free fertiliser, improved seedlings and agro-chemicals to farmers.
Candido who launched the programme ahead of 2018 farming activities in the council said that1,440 bags of fertiliser would be distributed free to farmers while the improved seedlings and agro-chemicals would be given out at subsidised rate.
“ We are giving out one and half metric tons of fertiliser to farmers as well as the sales of improved seeds and agro-chemicals to our farmers at very low rates.
“We have tractor-hiring services for interested farmers at affordable cost as part of our efforts towards making agriculture attractive to young farmers and boosting this ageless profession,’’ he said.
Specifically, Candido said 120 bags of fertiliser would be given to each of the12 wards within the council for distribution to farmers.
He urged farmers to use the farm inputs to boost their yields during the rainy season.
Candido also urged farmers and herdsmen in various communities to live together in peace.
“We must all continue to strive towards having a better relationship with one another for a better community and one nation,’’ he said.
On the achievements of the council, Candido listed construction and renovation of slaughter houses at Karshi and Karmo, expansion and restocking of AMAC fish pond at Karu.
Earlier, Dr Reuben Ishaya, Head, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, stressed the need to enlighten farmers on modern techniques in farming.
He advised farmers to avoid the use of fake and substandard farming input during the farming season.
Ishaya commended the chairman for supporting farmers to record a bumper harvest in the farming season.
Mr Emmanuel Danladi, who spoke on behalf of the farmers, commended the council chairman for the initiative. (NAN).
