Umuahia, Jan. 15, 2023(NAN) Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has called on Nigerians to demonstrate greater commitment to the peace and unity of the country.
Ikpeazu’s call is contained in his message to this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cenotaph, Umuahia on Sunday.
He was represented at the event by his deputy, Chief Oko Chukwu.
He described peace and unity as key to building a greater and better society.
He said that every Nigerian had a task to ensure that the nation remained united.
According to him, a united Nigeria is a better way to honour the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes and the armed forces.
“Let the ceremony be in tandem with our individual and collective resolve to live in peace and harmony with one another.
“Let us make active contributions to national and global discourse to either reduce wars and conflicts to the barest minimum or eradicate them completely.
“This will be the ultimate remembrance which we can give to our fallen and gallant heroes,” Ikpeazu said.
He said that the State Government would continue to prioritise security and partner security agencies to sustain the prevailing peace and security in the state.
Ikpeazu expressed the readiness of the state government to support and encourage the Nigerian Legion.
In an interview with newsmen on the sideline, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Rose Urenta, said the celebration was an indication that the efforts of the fallen heroes were greatly appreciated.
Urenta said that the “State Government will continue to support the Nigerian Legion through making provisions to improve their welfare”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Armed Forces Remembrance Day is celebrated annually on January 15 to honour the nation’s fallen heroes and servicemen. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
