Abuja, June 16, 2017 (NAN) The African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) has developed a web-based Pan Africa Monitoring and Reporting System for monitoring and reporting progress in the water and sanitation sector.

Mr Nelson Gomonda, AMCOW Monitoring and Reporting Project Manager, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the system would help address the data challenge in Africa where member-states used different data management methodologies.

“What we are actually doing at the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) is to develop a Monitoring and Reporting System that can help us at AMCOW to track progress that member states are making in the implementation of high level commitments.

“These are commitments that either presidents at the African Union Summit have made or the African ministers themselves have made, but more importantly tracking the progress that Africa is making in the implementation of the Africa water vision 2025.

“We are developing a system for Monitoring and Reporting that can also make us in Africa track progress of the implementation of the SDGs, what we have done is to make sure that we develop a common set of indicators that can help us track progress in each and every member state.’’

Gomonda said the issue of monitoring and reporting the progress being made in the water and sanitation sector gained momentum in July 2008 with the African Union’s Sharm El-Sheikh Declaration requesting AMCOW to report annually on the state of the continent’s water resources and sanitation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the web-based reporting system was developed with funding from the African Water Facility.

The Africa Water Vision 2025 envisages an Africa where there will be equitable and sustainable use and management of water resources for poverty alleviation, socio-economic development, regional cooperation, and the environment.

AMCOW was formed in 2002 in Abuja, Nigeria, primarily to promote co-operation, security, social and economic development and poverty eradication among member states. (NAN)
