Envisioning a better Nigerian society: The role of religious organisations

Envisioning a better Nigerian society: The role of religious organisations

By Uchenna Eletuo, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Lagos, Dec. 29, 2022 (NAN) As the year 2023 approaches with expectations for individuals and climes, what is uppermost in the minds of Nigerians is the general elections billed to take place within the first quarter of the year.

It is a transition year where Nigerians will go to the polls to elect new leaders in the quest for a society of their dreams and betterment of the country.

Beyond the polls, social pundits, state actors and the clergy have continued to point searchlights on the religious bodies and their role in the moulding of citizens’ characters and achievement of a better Nigeria.

With Nigeria being a secular state, every member of the society belongs to one faith or the other, hence the role such bodies have to play in the social mobilisation agenda.

According to Peter Ekeh in his book “The two Publics”, the faith bodies exert great influence on persons that people obey and revere directives given by the bodies where they belong.

Analysts have continued to x-ray the nexus between such bodies and members with a view to finding the congruence, in order to adopt such in the larger society where the state controls.

The analysts believe that if same individuals can conduct themselves well in accordance with the tenets of faith groups but do otherwise in the larger society where the state is in charge, a liaison of the faith bodies and the state is essential to mould better characters.

A former Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Uche Kalu, says the Church has been in the business of lifting the society and advancing mankind in various facets.

He says with a good partnership between the state and the Church, a lot more human-oriented  programmes will be achieved.

The new President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) His Grace, Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, believes faith organisations have a role to play in value re-orientation of the people.

Okoh, who expressed the view during a reception in his honour in Lagos, charges leaders of worship centres to mould members’ characters to reflect what the scriptures dictate as such persons exhibit those good conducts in the larger society.

He regrets the level of corruption in the society where not less than 80 per cent of its population are believers of one religious body or the other.

“If we must get it right come 2023 and beyond, intentional efforts must be made by the religious bodies to mobilise members toward a good Nigerian society of everyone’s dream.

“Staying aloof as was done by some organisations in the past is no longer fashionable. Any good policy intention of the state must be amplified in the various worship centres to make it easy for the state actors to advance the polity.

“Issues that tend to create division in the society must be played down to allow cohesion and those that tend to bond us should be highlighted.

“Civil conducts of citizens to one another should be the watchword,” he says.

The CAN boss frowns at the levity with which people handle public facilities, treating them as government property that should not be taken care of.

He says such mindsets are clogs in the wheel of national development and urges people to desist from such acts in order not to overwhelm the state with re-current expenditure.

The cleric believes proper use by the people will enable governments to focus on other pressing matters of common good.

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, His Grace Mathew Hassan Kukah, says there is nothing wrong with Nigeria, but notes that the polarisation of the people by the politicians is done for selfish ends of the proponents.

He tasks religious bodies to educate their people on citizens’ civic responsibilities and obligations to help close the gulf between people and also that between them and the state, that has done harm than good to the polity.

Chief Missionner, Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), Imam Abdul-Azeez Onike, says the dichotomy that exists between people on religious basis is baseless as everyone is from the same God.

Onike believes that faith groups should up their games in human character moulding.

“If we choose to reform our mindsets to social redeeming values, the society will be a lot better and the government will channel limited resources to pro-human projects,” he said.

The Muslim leader emphasises on prayer for the nation’s leaders, saying that God still answers prayers made in good faith and can bestow leaders with discerning minds when people  pray.

He calls on people to always pray for the nation and its leaders in order for them to remain focused, saying such can foster good governance in the society.

Analysts believe that religious bodies, asides contributing in the making of a better society, should also not shy away from holding the state accountable when things seem not to be going well in the polity. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng).

“The message of Christmas is  of   peace and oneness. It is to  express love to our neighbours regardless of their religion, ethnicity or political leanings.

“Our political leaders especially those jostling to lead the country, should use the season to reflect on the good ways of Jesus Christ to give them directives when they assume office.”

The CAN president appealed to Nigerians not to allow the fear of insecurity in the land to hinder them from coming out enmass during the forthcoming general elections to vote for credible candidates of their choice.

God will change Nigeria’s fortunes for good – Archbishop Martins

Message

By Uchenna Eletuo

Lagos, Dec. 24, 2023 (NAN) The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale-Martins, on Saturday urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and hope that God will not fail to deliver the country from the shackles of bad leadership and its attendant poverty.

Adewale-Martins decried what he called “injustice, inequality and feelings of marginalisation associated with the Nigerian state,” and gave the projection in his 2022 Christmas message.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos reports that the message, given by the Church’s Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, is an annual ritual meant to encourage people and to provide God’s grace on Nigerians.

The High Priest asked everyone to hold on to the belief that Nigeria shall return to the path of prosperity and peace once again.

He said that just as Jesus was born on Christmas night and He brought redemption to the whole of humanity so his coming at Christmas of 2022 would be a positive transformation to Nigerians.

“The celebration of Christmas should serve as a symbol of hope that God has not abandoned Nigeria and Nigerians.

“On the contrary, the days of victory over the forces of retrogression are near.

“Just as Christmas begets hope for humanity, so it heralds hope for our country, Nigeria, particularly at this period when millions of citizens are in pain and frustrated as a result of hardship in the land.

“We must cultivate the spirit of expectancy just as the story of Christmas is the story of God’s unending love for mankind. My message to you is that God loves us and so His love is bound to beget hope.

“However, as they say: ‘Heaven helps those who help themselves,’ so all Nigerians need to do the needful. We must all pay keen attention to the political happenings as we look forward to the general elections coming in 2023.

“All persons of voting age should go get their voting cards and parttake in the elections and vote only credible persons capable of changing the fortunes of the country to better,” the Bishop said.

He urged Nigerians not to sell their votes in order not to jeopardise the future of their children.

He charged the political leaders to allow the spirit of God to guide them to enable them make policies for the common good rather than for the benefit of a privileged few. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Christmas: Extend love to everyone, priest tells worshippers

Love

By Uchenna Eletuo

Lagos, Dec. 23, 2022 (NAN) Rev. Fr. Pius Yusuf, Priest-In-Charge of Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, Ojo Barracks, on Friday urged worshippers to extend love to everyone, as this was what Christmas celebration was all about.

Yusuf, an army Chaplain, said this during an early morning mass to commemorate the 37 years of consecration of the church.

He said that the joy of the Christmas season would have been meaningless without the divine gift of God the son to mankind that depicts love.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Mass, which attracted personnel from other formations that used to be members of the Church before being posted elsewhere, was a forerunner to the anniversary celebration on Sunday.

In his message at the Mass, Yusuf said that there was no alternative to the gift of love as exemplified by the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to him, if people should eschew bitterness and express love to one another, the world will be what God wants it to be for mankind’s benefits.

“The season of advent is the period of love expression to everyone, for Christ came for the sake of everyone, therefore, there should be no discrimination.

“Almsgiving is one of the features of the period, we should remember to bless the less privileged around us with things to make them happy,” he said.

Also, speaking at the event, a founding member of the church and a senior citizen, Mr Shedrack Amusa, said that the worship centre was where personnel relate as family, irrespective of rank.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

2023: Enthronment of good government will end terrorism in Nigeria – CAN

2023: Enthronment of good government will end terrorism in Nigeria – CAN

Government

By Uchenna Eletuo

Lagos, Dec. 22, 2022 (NAN) The Lagos State Chapter of the Christain Association of Nigeria (CAN) says only the enthronment of a good leadership in 2023 will end terrorism in the country.

The Chairman of the association, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the state’s Christmas carol at the Christ the Light Chapel Alausa, on Wednesday.

Adegbite said Nigerians had an ample opportunity in the coming election to put in the position of authority leaders that could bring Nigeria of their dream to reality.

The Bishop, who had led teams to offer palliatives to the Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) camps in the northern part of the country where terrorists attack was a regular feature, expressed dismay at the havoc in the area.

The Lagos preacher described terrorism and insurgency as whirlwind that blew no one any good and called on Nigerians to come out enmass to vote credible persons at the polls.

The CAN boss, sympathetic to the APC’s Presidential candidate Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, said that christains in Lagos were in support of the ruling party’s standard bearer.

According to him, the people want peace in Nigeria and it is somebody of the Calibre of Asiwaju that can muster the political will to fight terrorism to standstill.

“His antecedents over the year as a public officer and freedom fighter, had protrayed him to be patrotic and dependable nationalist.

“We need a leader that is capable of using other means, aside from military, to quell the crises that had resulted in human carnage in parts of the country,” he said.

He called on the Nigerian youths to make their voice heard in the elections by partaking in the process.

He advised the younger ones not to stand aloof but allow those that could create the much needed job, that would absorb them, into position of authority.

He said that the Lagos CAN had been vocal in matters affecting the people and would continue to do so, to lead the people well. (NAN)
