Court jails driver 4 months for cheating

Kaduna, Dec. 17, 2020 (NAN) A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a driver, Mohammed Yunusa, 33, to four-month jail for cheating.

Yunusa, a resident of Ungwan Sarki Kaduna State, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating his friend, Haruna Hamza, to the tune of N240,000.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Yunusa after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Emmanuel, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine and also ordered him to refund the N240,000 to the complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that Hamza lodged a complaint against the convict on Dec. 3, at the Gabasawa Police Station.

Leo said sometimes that in September, the complainant entrusted his Mercedes truck to Yunusa, who was his friend, on hire purchase with the agreement to pay N30,000 per week.

He said the convict used the truck for two months and failed to remit the sum of N240,000 to the complainant.

The prosecutor said any time the complainant asked for the money, the convict would always promise to give him but never did.

He said that the offences contravened the provisions of section 51 and 89 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017. (NAN)

Court remands labourer for allegedly defiling minor

Kaduna, Dec. 16, 2020 (NAN) A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday ordered that a 26-year-old labourer, Haruna Yusuf, be remanded at a Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, who did not take Yusuf’s  plea, ordered the prosecution to send the case file to the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and adjourned the case to Jan. 8, 2021 for hearing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, had earlier told the court that Yusuf, who resides at Isah Kaita Road, Kaduna, committed the offence at his residence on Nov. 30.

According the prosecutor, the girl’s mother had sent her on an errand when the defendant lured her to his room.

He said the girl’s mother was in search of her daughter when she heard her screaming in an uncompleted building and saw Yusuf on top of her.

Leo stated that the offence contravened the provisions of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. (NAN)

Kaduna, Dec. 10, 2020 (NAN) The Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate Police Brutality in Kaduna State, on Thursday, said it will begin its sittings as from Jan. 5, 2021, with a call on interested parties to submit their memoranda at the secretariats of all the local government areas in the state.

The Chairman of the panel, Retired Justice David Wyom, in an address to the press, assured justice for people with genuine complaints.

Wyom said that the panel’s sitting would begin at 10.00a.m at the Banquet Hall of the State House, adding that the panel shall abide by the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry Law Cap 34, Laws of Kaduna State, 1991, in its assignment.

He said that the Panel would receive and investigate complaints of police brutality, or related extra-judicial killings in the state, and requested members of the public to submit their memoranda at  the secretariats of the 23 Local Government Areas, which have been designated as submission points for all memoranda, expected to be submitted on or before Jan. 29, 2021.

The chairman also said that the Panel would evaluate evidence presented and other surrounding circumstances to draw conclusions on the viability of complaints and recommend compensation or other remedial measures, where appropriate.

The Panel is expected to conduct its assignment and submit its report within the maximum period of six months, unless the Panel showed compelling reasons as to why the Governor should approve an extension of time, he said.

A total number of 28 petitions had so far been submitted to the panel for its attention and that it would hold its sittings Tuesday to Thursday every week, unless it indicated otherwise, the chairman also said.

Woman, 39, docked over alleged stabbing of neighbour with broken bottle

Kaduna, Dec. 2, 2020 (NAN) The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 39-year-old woman, Esther Tunde, before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ court for allegedly stabbing her neighbour with a broken bottle.

The defendant, who resides at Malali in Kaduna State, is standing trial on two-count charge of assault and causing grievous hurt to her neighbour, offences she pleaded not guilty to.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov. 24 at their residence.

He said the complaint, Naomi James, the  defendant’s neighbour, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station.

The prosecutor alleged that a fight had ensued between the defendant and the complainant after an argument.

He told the court that the defendant allegedly beat the complainant to a pulp and thereafter stabbed her with a broken bottle.

The offences, according to him, contravene Sections 173 and 241 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until Dec. 21, for hearing. (NAN)

Kaduna, Dec. 2, 2020(NAN)A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a 27-year-old mechanic, Adamu Isah, be remanded in a correctional facility over alleged culpable homicide.

The police charged Isah, who resides at Kawo in Kaduna State,  with culpable homicide.

The Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who did not take the plea of the accused, ordered the police to return the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

Emmanuel said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter, adding that only the High Court has the jurisdiction to grant bail on capital offence.

He adjourned the matter until Dec. 21, for legal advice.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional, Police Headquarters Kawo, in Kaduna, to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), through a letter dated Sept. 12.

Leo said that one Shehu Garba, of Ungwan Rimi, a brother to the deceased reported the matter at the police station.

The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant inflicted injury with a machete on one Musa Garba’s head during a fight.

Leo added that the victim was taken to the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital where he later died.

He said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.(NAN)

Court sentences 2 men to 12 months imprisonment for house breaking

Kaduna, Nov. 5, 2020 (NAN) A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced two men to six months imprisonment each for criminal conspiracy, house breaking and theft.

The convicts, Abubakar Haruna, 22, and Mohammed Sani, 20, both residents of Kurmin Mashe in Kaduna State, earlier pleaded guilty to the charges.

The magistrate, Mr Benjamin Hassan, however, gave the convicts the option to pay N10, 000 fine each.

Prosecuting Insp. Chidi Leo had told the court that on Oct. 29, two complainants, Tukur Abdullahi and Maryam Shuaibu both residents of Nasfat Village Kurmin Mashe, reported the matter at Gabasawa Police Station..

He told the court that the convicts broke into the homes of Abdullahi and Maryam while both were away at work and stole their household properties.

He listed the stolen items to include one Samsung S8 tablet and one Samsung Galaxy tablet both valued at N189,000; three plasma television sets valued N450,000; one gold ring valued N140,000 and one I-tel phone valued N20,000.

Other items included Nokia and Infinix phones valued N60,000, Samsung Galaxy S8 phone valued N118,000, while the cost of damaged doors was put at N130,000.

The prosecutor said detectives traced one of the phones to the first convict, Haruna whose arrest led to the arrest of the second convict.

Leo said that the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State. (NAN)

Court remands farmer for allegedly defiling neighbour’s 5-year-old daughter

Kaduna, Nov. 5, 2020(NAN) A Kaduma Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered that a 30-year-old farmer, Ishak Aminu, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s five-year-old daughter be remanded in a correctional centre.

The police charged Aminu, who resides in Durumi Village Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, with defilement.

The Chief Magistrate, Benjamin Hassan, did not take Aminu’s plea for want of jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Hassan ordered the police to return the case file to the Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

He adjourned the matter until Nov. 17.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Aminu committed the offence  on Oct. 28 in his residence.

Leo said that Aminu lured the five-year-old girl into his room and defiled her.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 209 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.(NAN)

Kaduna judicial panel calls citizens to submit petitions on police brutality

Kaduna, Nov. 4, 2020 (NAN) The Judicial Panel of Inquiry in Kaduna State on Wednesday invited members of the public to submit petitions against police brutality and others related extra-judicial killings in the state.

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), by the secretary of the panel, Hajara Jibrin Abubakar, the public is advised to submit the petition/memoranda on or before 25 November, 2020, in 15 hard copies.

She said the petition/memoranda should also be addressed to the Secretary, Judicial Panel of Inquiry into act of Police Brutality and other related extra-Judicial killings in Kaduna State, Former Protocol Office Building, General Hassan Usman Katsina House, Kawo, Kaduna.

“All enquiries on the activities of the Panel should be addressed to the Secretary of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on email: panelofinquiry.policebrutality@gmail.com.

She noted that each petition/memoranda should be accompanied have photographs attached, video clips and or other material evidence, where available.

Abubakar also said each memorandum should also state the name, telephone number and contact address of the Petitioner (s) who may be required to give oral evidence before the Judicial Panel of Inquiry at the Public sittings.

“Submission of Petitions/Memoranda can be submitted at any of the following Offices, Zone One: Ministry of Justice Zonal Office, Dogarawa Zaria, Ministry of Justice Zonal office Saminaka and all Local Government Secretariats (Office of the Secretary to Local Government).

“The panel will also evaluate evidence presented and other surrounding circumstances, and draw conclusions as for the validity of complaints, recommend compensation and other remedial measures, where appropriate,” she added. (NAN)

Housewife in court for allegedly beating up 5-year-old ward

Kaduna, Nov. 3, 2020(NAN)  A 39-year-old housewife, Maryam Balarabe, who allegedly beat up a five-year-old beat who was in her care with a USB cable, on Tuesday appeared in a  Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna.

The police charged Balarabe, who resides in Guga Road Barnawa, Kaduna State with child abuse and causing grievous hurt

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, told the court that some neighbours who pleaded anonymous reported the matter at the Divisional Police Headquarters Barnawa on Oct. 22.

Baba alleged that the defendant, who was a guardian to the five -year-old girl, beat up the minor, using a USB cable and inflicted injuries on her.

He said that during police investigation, the defendant confessed to using a USB cable to beat up the ward and also confessed that she pushed her to the ground.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 207 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant , however, pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Aisha Danja admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of  N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Danja adjourned the case until Nov. 25, for hearing.(NAN)

Travel agent in court for alleged N1.7m visa fraud

Kaduna, Nov. 3, 2020(NAN) A 35-year-old travel agent, Alao Ganiyu, on Monday appeared in a  Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna for allegedly defrauding a traveller of  N1.7 million.

The police charged Ganiyu with three counts of criminal breach of trust, cheating and forgery.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, told the court that the complainant, Lawal Salami reported the matter on Oct. 25, through a petition to the Deputy Commissioner of Police State Criminal and Investigation Department.

Baba alleged that sometime in 2019, the defendant promised to secure a visa to the Bahamas for the complainant .

The prosecutor alleged that after collecting the money, the defendant converted it to his personal use and then forged a visa and ticket for the complainant which was rejected at the airport.

Baba said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 297, 345 and 307 of the Kaduna State Panel Code Law 2017.

After the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Aisha Danja, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Danja also ordered that sureties must be reliable and must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court with fixed residential addresses.

The  magistrate adjourned the case until Nov. 25 , for hearing.(NAN)
