He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work, adding that what he saw is a clear indication that all hands are on deck to ensure that the service has all the assets it requires to discharge the task assigned to it.

“And another good thing is that we are doing the maintenance in the country, rather than in foreign land, which means we are building the capacity of our personnel.

“They are learning fast, and this is not only taking place in Kainji, the same thing is happening in Lagos.

“We will soon commence another life extension programme on the L-39 in Kano, similarly, I am sure  that you are aware of the C-130 aircraft we have done, in Ikeja, and we are likely to embark on the third C-130 aircraft also in Ikeja,”Abubakar said.

The CAS noted that all these efforts clearly shows that the service is making progress in terms of capacity building and also in terms of developing the capability of its personnel.

He also said that with the ongoing maintenance, the service has succeeded in refurbishing additional fighter aircraft to enable it carry out its core mandate of safeguarding the country.

“As a result of this effort you are seeing here in Kainji, also, in Makurdi, we have the Chinese firm that are working on the  F-7 aircraft, which I believe very soon those aircrafts will be functional as well.

“The whole idea is to mobilize every asset in NAF as well as utilizing them to make sure the country and its citizens are secured and safe,’’ the CAS said.

Abubakar commended the Air Officer Commanding, AVM Musa Muktar, for his efforts in building the capacity of the personnel.

“We cannot at all times depend on others we must be able over time build capacity, and that is exactly what this programme is all about,” he said. (NAN)

Expert urges FG to revisit 2019 revised National Security Strategy document

Advice

By Yahaya Isah

Abuja, Oct. 1, 2020 (NAN) A security expert, Dr Kabir Adamu, Managing Director, Beacon Consulting Ltd., has called on the Federal Government to revisit the 2019 revised National Security Strategic Document as a way of out of the current security challenges in the country.

Adamu, who made the call in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, said if revisited, and subsequently implemented, it would certainly address the security challenges currently facing the country.

He noted that in 2019, the present administration revised the National Security Strategy document and promised that there was going to be a paradigm shift where every Nigerian irrespective of their locations would be protected.

“In the document, there was community policing and several others like food security and health security. But up till now, we have not seen the effect.

“I urge the Federal Government to try its best possible to implement it because it is when the document is implemented that the root cause of security challenges in the country can be addressed.

“This is because the document to a large extent, contain issues like, the need to invest in human development, training and re-training of security personnel, overhauling of the security apparatus and their welfare,” Adamu said.

The expert called on security agencies, especially the military, to synergise and work together particularly in area of intelligence gathering if the nation’s quest to tackle insecurity was to succeed.

“We have so many security outfits in the country but that synergy is not really there as the custodians of security of the country.

“With good working relationship, the task of protecting the territorial integrity of the country as well as the internal security threat can easily be nipped in the bud,” Adamu said.

He noted that the root cause of security challenge in the country borders on the issue of governance.

Adamu urged the three tiers of government, especially the Federal Government to review its strategy by addressing the issues of unemployment, high poverty level, illiteracy, among others.

“If all these indices are not properly addressed, they can easily lead to thriving ground for various security challenges in the country.

“Failure to address all these can also lead to huge distrust between the government and the people,” he said.

Adamu advised Nigerians to be patient and persevere as the current administration was doing its best possible to improve on the economic situation for the good of everybody. (NAN)

Diplomats in Zimbabwe warn against using virus to restrict freedoms

Diplomats in Zimbabwe warn against using virus to restrict freedoms

Warning
Harare, Aug. 28, 2020 (dpa/NAN) The Foreign Missions of the U.S., Germany and other countries in Zimbabwe on Friday told President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government not to use the Covid-19 pandemic as a pretext to stifle civil rights.

“Covid-19 must not be used as an excuse to restrict citizens’ fundamental freedoms. Freedom of the press, opinion, expression and of assembly are all universally-recognised human rights and guaranteed by the Zimbabwean constitution.

“The government also has a responsibility to investigate and prosecute those responsible for violating human rights,” the missions said.

The positions of Germany, Poland, Britain, the U.S., Canada, Norway and the Netherlands come two years after Mnangagwa’s inauguration, a hopeful occasion for many Zimbabweans after the ousting of reviled long-time leader Robert Mugabe.

However, many critics said Mnangagwa had proven as bad as his predecessor as there had been a recent clampdown on human rights and free expression in the country with the arrests of journalists and opposition members.

Meanwhile, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, spokesman for the ruling Zanu PF party, dismissed their positions as rubbish.

“It’s just a bunch of nonsense. Absolute rubbish. If it is not for sanctions by those countries Zimbabwe would be flourishing,” Mugwadi said.

Aside from concerns over rights issues, Zimbabwe is experiencing severe inflation, in spite of promises by Mnangagwa when he came to power that he would prop up the ailing economy.(dpa/NAN)

Italy begins delivering new socially distancing desks to schools

Desks
Rome, Aug. 28, 2020 (dpa/NAN) Italy on Friday began the delivery of new school desks adapted for COVID-19 safety regulations, part of a large-scale effort to re-open classrooms after a six-month shutdown.

A government commissioner ordered more than 2.4 million desks, and the first 799 were delivered to schools in Bergamo province, which was worst hit by the pandemic.

Schools are being equipped with one-seat desks to facilitate social-distancing.

Students are supposed to sit at least 1m apart; if not, they will have to wear face masks.

he new desks are smaller than previously used one-seat models, and in some schools with older equipment, are due to replace two-person desks.

Schools are scheduled to re-open on Sept. 14, but the government is struggling to put everything in place.

The delivery of the new desks is for instance, expected to continue until late October.

Authorities are facing other challenges, including distancing on public transport and school buses, as well as potential staffing problems.

The daily Corriere della Sera reported that many teachers classified as “fragile workers,” such as those with pre-existing conditions, may refuse to return to school, due to health risks.

Italy closed schools and universities in early March, when it became the first Western country to go into a national lockdown. However, classes and exams continued remotely.

Earlier, Civil Protection Agency official Agostino Miozzo, said in a parliamentary hearing that re-opening schools was a risk, but yet a necessity.

“We expect, as it is happening abroad, some slight increase in the virus transmission index, but the risk needs to be weighed against the absolute need to re-open schools, Miozzo said.(dpa/NAN)

German authority requests travelers to self isolate

Travelers
Berlin, Aug. 27, 2020 (dpa/NAN) German authority have requested returned travelers from regions considered high-risk in the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday to self-isolate for up to 14 days.

However, they had the option of leaving the centre from the fifth day upon providing negative test result.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of Germany’s 16 states, as rising infection rates in the country strengthen calls for tougher nationwide rules.

However, it remained unclear, whether the coronavirus tests would be offered free of charge.

Travelers returning from high-risk areas had previously been required to get tested at the border and only faced 14-day quarantine if the result was positive.

The Federal Government is calling on state authorities to enforce the new quarantine rules effectively, with fines for those who violate them.(dpa/NAN)
