Cheptegei gunning for 5,000m-10,000m double at Tokyo Games

Kampala, Dec. 30, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei says he is targeting the 5,000m-10,000m double at the Tokyo Olympics after breaking the world records in both distances this year.

The 24-year-old set a new 10,000 mark of 26 minutes, 11.00 seconds at the Valencia World Record Day event in October to beat Kenenisa Bekele’s time of 26:17.53 set in 2005.

At the Monaco Diamond League meeting two months earlier he had also bettered Bekele’s 16-year-old 5,000m record by almost two seconds with a time of 12:35.36.

If Cheptegei wins gold medals in both events at next year’s postponed Games, he would become only the eighth man to complete the double.

“It would be a mountain to climb, but the challenge is up to me,” Cheptegei told the BBC.

“It’s demanding a lot, in terms of racing and mindset but I want to give myself a try to win both gold medals,.

“It would be really amazing to win the double, but if I win gold in the 10,000m I would still be grateful.”

Cheptegei, who runs in Nike’s Dragonfly spikes — a lightweight shoe that combines a unique foam and carbon plates — said that his gear helped him but was not the reason for his success this year.

A debate over runners’ shoes has been raging since high-tech footwear developed by Nike played a starring role in two of the biggest distance-running achievements of 2019.

“The shoes really do help. But in this case the shoes are not only available to Mr. Cheptegei. They are available for everyone who wants to attack the world record,” he added.

“You have seen the likes of Yomif Kejelcha, Selemon Barega … it’s not about shoes only, but athletes having this period concentrating more on training and not travelling.

“I was focused on just this one thing … that was breaking the world record.” (Reuters/NAN)

Fox News extends streak, sets cable news records in 2020

Records

Los Angeles, Dec. 30, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Ratings for Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Channel topped all news and basic cable channels for a fifth straight year in 2020, according to Nielsen data released on Tuesday.

The network averaged 1.9 million viewers per day and 3.6 million in primetime – record levels for cable news channels – during a news-heavy year marked by the coronavirus pandemic, protests for racial justice and a contentious U.S. presidential election.

While Fox was ahead in key metrics when looking at the year as a whole, AT&T Inc’s CNN beat Fox in total day ratings for 41 straight days after the Nov. 3 presidential contest, CNN said on Dec. 16.

The channel also recorded its most-watched year in its 40-year history, with an average of 1.1 million viewers per day and 1.8 million in primetime.

Fox angered President Donald Trump on election night by projecting that Democrat Joe Biden would win Arizona before other major news outlets called the state.

Trump urged his supporters to check out smaller news channels including Newsmax and One America News Network (OAN)

Newsmax’s audience jumped after the election, though its overall audience remained much smaller than Fox’s reach.

In November, Newsmax primetime ratings peaked at 495,000 on average, slipping to 391,000 in early December.

OAN pulled in its highest ratings ever in 2020, its president, Charles Herring, said via email, and viewership surged by more than 40 per cent in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter.

Herring said the data was based on viewing on set-top boxes of a major pay TV provider in 70 markets, which showed OAN ranked as the No. 4 national news network with those viewers.

OAN does not subscribe to Nielsen ratings and did not release precise viewership totals. (Reuters/NAN)

Pierre Cardin, father of fashion branding, dies at 98

Paris, Dec. 29, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) French couturier Pierre Cardin, who made his name by selling designer clothes to the masses, and his fortune by being the first to exploit that name as a brand for selling everything from cars to perfume, died on Tuesday aged 98.

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Cardin drew scorn and admiration from fellow fashion designers for his brash business sense, and influenced catwalks with his space-age, futuristic bubble dresses and geometrical cuts and patterns.

Cardin, who was a mentor to designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, was active in fashion circles until the last, still taking young designers under his wing, attending parties and events and regularly visiting his Paris office by Jaguar.

“Thank you Mr Cardin for opening me the doors to fashion and for making my dream possible,” Gaultier wrote on Twitter.

Cardin was the first designer to sell clothes collections in department stores in the late 1950s, and the first to enter the licensing business for perfumes, accessories and even food – which later drove profits for many other fashion houses.

“It’s all the same to me whether I am doing sleeves for dresses or table legs,” a telling quote on his website once read.

Hard as it may be to imagine decades later, Armani chocolates, Bulgari hotels and Gucci sunglasses are all based on Cardin’s realisation that a fashion brand’s glamour had endless merchandising potential.

Over the years his name has been stamped on razor blades, household goods, and tacky accessories – even cheap boxer shorts.

He once said it would not bother him to have his initials, PC, etched into rolls of toilet paper, and he was also the inspiration for a phallus-like perfume flask.

His detractors accused him of destroying the value of his brand and the notion of luxury in general. But he seemed largely unaffected by criticism.

“I had a sense for marketing my name,” Cardin told Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in 2007. “Does money spoil one’s ideas? I don’t dream of money after all, but while I’m dreaming, I’m making money. It’s never been about the money.”

He maintained that he built his business empire without ever asking a bank for a loan.

Born near Venice on July 2, 1922, to French parents of Italian descent, Cardin was educated in the not-so-glamorous French city of Saint Etienne.

He went to work for a tailor in nearby Vichy at age 17 and dreamt for a time of becoming an actor, doing some work on the stage as well as modelling and dancing professionally.

When he came to Paris in 1945, he made theatrical masks and costumes for Jean Cocteau’s film, “Beauty and the Beast”, and a year later joined the then-unknown Christian Dior.

His first big commercial venture, when he teamed up with the Printemps department store in the late 1950s, led to him being briefly expelled from the rarified guild of French fashion designers, the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture.

Couturiers in that club were forbidden at that time to show outside their Paris salons, let alone in department stores.

He also blazed a trail outside France long before other fashion multinationals in search of new markets.

He presented a collection in Communist China in 1979 when it was still largely closed to the outside world. And just two years after the Berlin Wall came down, in 1991, a Cardin fashion show on Moscow’s Red Square attracted a crowd of 200,000.

Cardin also expanded into new businesses, buying fabled Paris restaurant Maxim’s in the 1980s and opening replica outlets around the world.

He leveraged the investment further by launching Minim’s, a chain of fancy fast-food joints that reproduced the Belle Epoque decor of the original exclusive Paris eatery.

His empire embraces perfumes, foods, industrial design, real estate, entertainment and even fresh flowers.

True to his taste for futuristic designs, Cardin also owns the Palais des Bulles, or Bubble Palace, a residence-cum-events-venue woven into the cliffs on one of the most exclusive strips of the French riviera.

Not too far away, there is also a chateau in the village of Lacoste that once belonged to the Marquis de Sade.

In February this year he teamed up with a designer seven decades his junior.

Pierre Courtial, 27, unveiled a collection at Cardin’s studio on Paris’s chic Rue Saint-Honore, with pieces that echoed some of the veteran designer’s geometrical aesthetics.

Cardin said he still rated originality above anything else.

“I’ve always tried to be different, to be myself,” he told Reuters. “Whether people like it or not, that’s not what matters.” (Reuters/NAN)

After eclipsing ‘mythological’ Bubka, Duplantis eyes Tokyo gold

Athletics

Stockholm, Dec. 28, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis said his desire to better Sergey Bubka’s outdoor mark kept him motivated in the 2020 season, and after clearing 6.15m to eclipse the Ukrainian great in September the 21-year-old is aiming to go higher next year.

Duplantis, a world silver medallist in Doha last year, set the world record by clearing 6.17m indoors in Poland in February and bettered that by a centimetre in Glasgow the same month.

He then went higher than Bubka’s outdoor mark of 6.14m, set in 1994, to win gold at the Rome Diamond League meeting in September.

World Athletics has not distinguished between indoor and outdoor records in pole vault since 2000.

“That was the main motivation for the outdoor season at the end, to really get the 6.15m and cement myself as the highest-ever jumper outdoors,” said Duplantis, who won all 16 of his meetings this year to register a perfect season.

“Growing up … you see Bubka as almost this mythological creature. He was not real in the things that he was doing, they didn’t seem possible. Any record where you can knock him down a ranking is a pretty special feeling.”

Duplantis, named male athlete of the year earlier this month, is now targeting gold at next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

“I definitely think I can jump higher. There’s always room to improve. How high? I don’t know, but there’s more to come,” he said.

“Winning an Olympic gold is the dream. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to win an Olympic gold, to be the best pole vaulter in the world. That’s the big goal going into the next year.” (Reuters/NAN)

New AIBA chief Kremlev eyes six-month reform programme

Moscow, Dec. 28, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Umar Kremlev, the new president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), plans to implement reforms over the next six months that could help restore its status with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), he told Reuters in an interview.

Elected to head amateur boxing’s governing body earlier this month, Kremlev has the task of implementing sweeping reforms in order for it to be recognised by the IOC in time for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

The IOC suspended AIBA last year, stripping it of any involvement in Olympic qualifiers and the tournament at the Tokyo Games over a string of governance, finance and ethical issues.

“I have planned that it would take around six or seven months to implement the reforms,” said Kremlev, who also serves as secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation.

“It’s an ambitious plan. This will not be easy to do.

Kremlev, named chairman of the AIBA Marketing Commission last year, has pledged to attract $50 million over the next two years to rebuild AIBA.

He said he was holding talks with international companies — the names of which he would not disclose — to secure potential advertisement and sponsorship deals.

“I think we will soon announce our sponsors and make the signing of any deals public,” he said.

The IOC has said the status of AIBA would be reviewed after the 2020 Tokyo Games, which were postponed to next year because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Kremlev said he also hoped to bring transparency to the organisation before the 2024 Olympics.

“The AIBA we see now has debts and practically no interaction with the federations,” he said.

“By the 2024 Olympic Games, you will see an independent AIBA able to attract funds … and help national federations hold tournaments. By 2024 we need to make AIBA the cleanest organisation, make it transparent for it to shine.” (Reuters/NAN)

“Demon Slayer” becomes Japan’s top-grossing movie

Movie

Tokyo, Dec. 28, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) “Demon Slayer”, the animated tale of a boy fighting human-eating demons that murdered his family, has shattered a nearly two-decade record to become Japan’s top-grossing movie, its distributor said on Monday.

The film, based on a popular manga and television anime series, powered past “Spirited Away”, the mega-hit Academy Award-winning movie by Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki that opened in 2001, in just a little over two months.

“Demon Slayer”, with a full official title of “Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie – Mugen Train”, had taken in 32.47 billion yen compared with 31.68 billion yen for “Spirited Away”, according to data released on Monday.

The film got an unexpected boost from the novel coronavirus, film industry watchers said.

People stuck at home because of social distancing got hooked on the manga comic and television series then rushed to watch the film when cinemas reopened.

The film, with its message of resilience, has also spawned a bonanza of merchandise – from toys to canned coffee – generating at least 270 billion yen($2.61 billion) in business as of Dec. 3, said Toshihiro Nagahama, senior economist at the Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute.

Sony Corp, whose music unit is co-distributor, also got a boost from the film, which has opened in several Asian countries and will head to the U.S. and Canada early in the New Year. (Reuters/NAN)

‘Wonder Woman’ box office hits a pandemic high in cinema, streaming showdown

Showdown

Los Angeles, Dec. 27, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) “Wonder Woman 1984” pulled in roughly $36.1 million at theatres worldwide over the Christmas holiday weekend, distributor Warner Bros. said on Sunday as it confirmed plans for a third film in the superhero franchise.

Of that total, an estimated $16.7 million came from U.S. and Canadian theatres, the AT&T Inc-owned studio said.

That ranked as the highest domestic box office opening since the novel coronavirus shuttered theatres in March, though the numbers were a fraction of those typical for a big-budget action flick.

Millions of people also watched “WW84” at home in the U.S., where the movie was made available to stream via WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, the company said in a statement.

Total viewing hours on HBO Max tripled on Friday compared with a typical day in the previous month, according to the statement.

Warner Bros. said it would accelerate development of a third “Wonder Woman” movie also written and directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot as the lasso-wielding warrior. (Reuters/NAN)

Sri Lanka batsman De Silva to miss rest of South Africa series

Cricket

Pretoria, Dec. 27, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Sri Lanka batsman Dhananjaya de Silva has been ruled out for the remainder of the two-test series in South Africa after suffering a grade two thigh strain, team officials confirmed on Sunday.

De Silva retired hurt during Sri Lanka’s first innings on the opening day of the first test at Centurion Park on Saturday.

His absence will not only weaken the tourists’ top-six batting line-up but also their bowling attack as they will be unable to call on his right-arm off-spin.

The 29-year-old was injured while on 79 as he cruised through for a comfortable single, immediately falling to the ground after completing the run.

De Silva is expected to be out for two weeks but Sri Lanka will hope to have him fit for the home series against England that starts in Galle on Jan. 14.

Sri Lanka closed the opening day on 340 for six, a strong position on a wicket that is providing plenty of assistance to the bowlers. (Reuters/NAN)

Lampard rips into ‘lazy’ Chelsea after Arsenal defeat

London, Dec. 27, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Chelsea manager Frank Lampard let rip at his players following their 3-1 Premier League defeat at struggling London rivals Arsenal on Saturday, saying their “lazy” performance had cost them the chance of going second in the Premier League.

A penalty from Alexandre Lacazette and goals from Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka helped a youthful Arsenal side seal their first league win in nearly two months.

“It was an opportunity to go second against a team that are having a tough time,” Lampard, whose side dropped to seventh, told Sky Sports.

“You either make it difficult for them or you give them a little opening and we did that from minute one and continued for 45 minutes.

“It was lazy to give away a penalty and lazy to give away a free kick that he (Xhaka) puts in the top corner.”

Chelsea improved in the second half and scored in the 85th minute through Tammy Abraham to make it 3-1 before Jorginho missed a penalty with a poor effort.

“We fought … but in the first half we gave ourselves too much to do… I’ll take responsibility on the outside but the players also have to take responsibility,” Lampard added.

“The message was clear, Arsenal are a dangerous team. When you go out and play 60 per cent or 70 per cent then you’re not going to win any Premier League games.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was delighted with the win that lifted his team to 14th.

“It doesn’t get any better than winning a London derby against Chelsea on Boxing Day,” he said. “Hopefully this is a turning point. I know they can play at this level.

“Let’s carry on. We still have big things to improve on.” (Reuters/NAN)

Messi says ‘lucky’ to have worked under Guardiola

Barcelona, Dec. 27, 2020 (Reuters/NAN)  Lionel Messi counts himself “lucky” to have worked under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona between 2008-12 and says the Spaniard brings “something special” to coaching, comments that are likely to fuel speculation the pair could reunite at Manchester City.

Messi was a mainstay of Guardiola’s Barca side that won 14 major titles and has been linked with a switch to City since the manager signed a new deal that will keep him at the Premier League club until the end of the 2022-23 season.

The Argentine player is into the final few months of his current contract in Spain having unsuccessfully tried to leave Barca during the close season.

“Pep has something special,” Messi told Spanish television channel La Sexta.

“He makes you see things in one way: how he prepares for matches, defensively, how to attack … he told you exactly how the match was going to be, how you had to attack to win.

“I was lucky … to train under Guardiola and Luis Enrique, the two best. Having them made me grow a lot physically and mentally, and also the tactical wisdom they’ve taught me.”

Guardiola said last month that he is unsure what the future holds for Messi but hopes that, as a Barcelona fan, he will remain at the La Liga club until the end of his career. (Reuters/NAN)
