Navy decorates 18 newly promoted Rear Adms., tasks them on professionalism

Decoration

By Yahaya Isah

Abuja, Dec. 9, 2020 (NAN) The Nigerian Navy (NN), on Wednesday decorated the 18 newly promoted Rear Adms. from the rank of Commodores, urging them to re-dedicate themselves in the discharge of their duties.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Ibok Ibas, noted that promotion was inherent in any organisation, and it came with more responsibilities.

Ibas said the significance of the ocassion was drawn from the critical need for courageous and dynamic leadership in the armed forces, as expected in every performance oriented organisation.

“Quality leadership in the armed forces is essential for the optimal realisation of its objectives, notably in the profession of arms.

“The optimal employment of men and material has direct impact on operational outcomes of the theatre and natural security as a whole.

“Hence in spite of the huge number of annual enlistments into the military, only the most dedicated and loyal rise to the very apex of the profession.

“Indeed, it is the dream of every officer to reach the peak of his or her career in the service, however, only a few .eventually realise this dream.

“This ocassion, which is the crowning glory of your hard work, total dedication and loyalty to the service and by extension, the nation, is no mean feat.

“I therefore, congratulate you all for being among the selected few that made it to this rank of your career.”

The CNS, however, reminded them that while it takes hard work to reach a glorious height, it also takes a hard work to remain there.

“I therefore, unreservedly congratulate you all and urged you all to justify the confidence of a proud and deserving nation.”

He noted that year 2020 undoubtedly witnessed significant disruption in all facets of our national lives, with the armed .forces now more than ever required to play more significant roles in ensuring security and prosperity of the country.

Ibas said as such, the service and indeed, the country required them to be more dedicated and display unalloyed loyalty to the President to address the myriad of security challenges plaguing the country.

“Your ingenuity, resourcefulness and integrity will be required as senior officers to reposition the service to enable it discharge its constitutional role for the security and prosperity of the country.

The CNS explained that the service in collaboration with other security agencies had continously strived to protect the economic mainstay of the country.

This, he said, was made possible through various operations to counter illegal oil bunkering and crude oil theft in the country.

He, however, urged them as leaders in the service to always be above board and ensure that their subordinates equally buy into the zero tolerance of the service against all forms of illegalities/criminalities at sea and ashore.

Earlier, the Special Guest of Honour, the Minister of Defence, Retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, congratulated the newly promoted senior officers for distinguishing themselves and being considered worthy of the elevation.

“As you all know, promotion in the military is a reward for hard work, dedication, patriotism, and loyalty to the service and the country.

“An officer must therefore, have these qualities as a prerequisite for consideration to ascend the pyramidal ladder.

I’m pleased to note that the officers decorated have strived hard to meet these requirements and remained true to their professional calling to weather the storm of career progression.”

Magashi, however, reminded them that promotion comes with much greater expectations and responsibilities in the discharge of duties, as such, they should be prepared for a big task.

“As you know, the service operating environment and the nation at large is rife with daunting security challenges including resource theft and the sabotage of critical oil/gas supporting infrastructure.

“Your elevation to the 2 star flag rank is therefore, a call for you to redouble efforts and contribute your quota to the service resolve to rid the nation’s maritime domain of any form criminalities.” (NAN)

Apple must face shareholder lawsuit over CEO Cook’s China sales comments

New York, Nov.5, 2020 (Reuters/NAN)  Apple Inc has been ordered to face a proposed class-action lawsuit by shareholders who accused Chief Executive Tim Cook of concealing falling demand for iPhones in China, resulting in billions of dollars of investor losses.

FILE PHOTO: Apple CEO Tim Cook poses with the all-new iPhone 12 Pro at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, U.S. in a photo released October 13, 2020. Brooks Kraft/Apple Inc./Handout via REUTERS

In a decision on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said shareholders led by a UK pension fund can sue over Cook’s comment on a Nov. 1, 2018, analyst call that while Apple was facing sales pressure in some emerging markets, “I would not put China in that category.”

Apple told suppliers to curb production a few days after Cook spoke, and on Jan. 2, 2019, unexpectedly cut its quarterly revenue forecast by up to $9 billion, which Cook blamed in part on pressure on China’s economy from U.S.-China trade tensions.

The lowered revenue forecast was the first by Cupertino, California-based Apple since the iPhone’s launch in 2007. Shares of Apple fell 10 per cent the next day, erasing $74 billion of market value.

Apple and Cook have said there was no proof they defrauded or intended to defraud the plaintiffs. The company did not immediately respond on Thursday to requests for comment.

In a 23-page decision, Rogers said shareholders plausibly alleged that Cook’s statements on the analyst call about China were materially false and misleading.

She said that while Cook might not have known specifics about “troubling signs” in China that the company had begun seeing, it “strains credulity” he would have been in the dark about the trade tensions and their possible impact on Apple.

The plaintiffs raised a “strong inference” that Cook knew about the risks when discussing China on the analyst call, and a “cogent and compelling inference that Cook did not act innocently or with mere negligence,” Rogers wrote.

Rogers, who works in Oakland, California, also dismissed claims related to demand for the iPhone XS and XS Max.

The plaintiffs are led by the Norfolk County Council as Administering Authority of the Norfolk Pension Fund, located in Norwich, England.

Bionic gloves help keep the music playing for Brazilian pianist

Gloves

Sao Paulo (Brazil), Nov.5, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Acclaimed Brazilian pianist João Carlos Martins had not played with 10 fingers since he lost the use of his right hand in a 1995 mugging in Bulgaria.

But today he has returned to play his favorite Bach sonatas thanks to “bionic gloves” invented by industrial designer Ubiratan Bizarro.

“When he showed me the gloves, I joked that they were for boxing, not to play the piano,” Martins, 80, said of the black neoprene gloves made by 3D printer.

The gloves have rods that make the fingers spring back up after they depress the keys and allow the pianist to continue playing.

Martins performed with leading orchestras in the U.S. and Europe and recorded Bach’s complete keyboard works, but the injuries ended his career.

For many years he played with one hand and a thumb, but lost the use of the left hand due to focal dystonia, a neurological condition affecting the muscles.

“To be able to use all ten fingers again more than 20 years later is a miracle for me at the age of 80,” he said.

Bizarro says he got the idea from Formula 1 motor racing technology. He spent less than $100 to make the first pair for Martins and now exports them to Europe under the brand name Bionic Extender Gloves.(Reuters/NAN)

Britain’s most fashionable man? Vogue hails Prince Charles

Vogue

London, Nov.5, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) His daughters-in-law Kate and Meghan are regularly lauded for their fashion sense, but 71-year-old Prince Charles, well-known for patching-up and mending his clothes, has probably been considered a less likely British style icon – until now.

“I’ve always admired the way you dress,” Edward Enninful, editor-in-chief of British Vogue, told Charles in an interview for the fashion magazine’s latest edition.

The praise for his timeless dress sense seemed to take the heir-to-the throne, who usually favours double-breasted suits accompanied with a tie and matching handkerchief, by surprise.

“I thought I was like a stopped clock … people come round after 25 years to dressing like I do,” he said with a laugh. “I’m very glad you think it has style. I mind about detail and colour and things like that.”

The male members of Britain’s royal family have usually taken a back seat to the females when it comes to fashion coverage.

Kate, wife of Charles’s elder son Prince William, has previously featured on the cover of Vogue while Meghan, wife of William’s younger brother Harry, has guest-edited the magazine.

Charles, who has long campaigned on environmental issues, was interviewed for Vogue about his commitment to sustainable fashion, something he said he had always taken to heart.

“I’m one of those people who hate throwing anything away. Hence, I’d rather have them maintained, even patched if necessary, than to abandon them,” he said, calling on manufacturers and consumers to be less wasteful.

He added: “But it seems to me there are huge opportunities, particularly now, within the whole sustainable fashion sector, to counter this extraordinary trend of throwaway clothing – or throwaway everything, frankly.” (Reuters/NAN)

Lockdown sends David Guetta back to his teens

Ibiza, Spain, Nov.5, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) For French DJ and record producer David Guetta, lockdown has been a welcome relief from a punishing, if stellar, career and brought back some of the freedom he had in his teens.

Speaking to Reuters ahead of his virtual MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA’s) performance on Sunday, he said this “moment of confinement” had been positive in many ways although he was very much aware how lucky he was not to have to worry about money.

“I started to make music every day, which I usually don’t because I’m touring so much,” he said via Zoom.

“I’m just making music for fun, like I was doing when I was 17, you know, and, and it’s amazing … it’s one of the best moments of my life when it comes to enjoying and making music and being inspired.”

The Best Electronic nominee prerecorded his EMAs performance in Budapest. He described his set as “pretty spectacular” and said he was “really, really impressed” with the show.

It will be the latest of several virtual performances since March, including two United at Home charity livestream events from Miami and New York in April and May which raised $1.5 million for coronavirus relief.

Guetta admitted that not having a live audience was hard. “I connect a lot with the crowd, you know, that’s probably what made me successful more than anything. So, I missed that connection.”

Known for his massive collaborations over almost two decades with international artists such as Akon, J Balvin, Nicki Minaj and Kelly Rowland, he said his latest track is different from anything he had done in the past.

“Let’s Love”, for which he reunites with Australian singer-songwriter Sia, is nominated for a Europe Music Award, in new category Video for Good and has also become a viral sound on TikTok.

The DJ said his children had to show him how the video-sharing social network worked but that he now sees its merits. “It’s really unbelievable how it really influenced the music markets of today,” he said.

Performances for the EMAs, which will be hosted by Little Mix, were filmed in various locations across Europe.

The line-up includes Sam Smith, Maluma, YUNGBLUD and Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga leads the nominations this year with seven.(Reuters/NAN)

Doping: CAS expects decision on Russian appeal against ban by end 2020

Decision

Lausanne (Switzerland), Nov.5, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Russia’s appeal against a four-year ban on competing at international events under its own flag has been heard by sport’s highest tribunal, which expects to make a decision before the end of the year, CAS said on Thursday.

Russia was sanctioned last year after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) concluded that Moscow had planted fake evidence and deleted files linked to positive doping tests in laboratory data that could have helped identify drug cheats.

Russia has denied the allegations.

Under the ban, Russia’s teams and athletes can only compete at major sporting events, including the Olympics, as neutrals, without the country’s flag or national anthem.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it had concluded a four-day hearing in Lausanne with most participants taking part via a video link due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“While it is difficult to predict exactly how long this process will take, it is anticipated that the (decision) will be notified to the parties by the end of this year,” CAS said in Thursday’s statement.(Reuters/NAN)
