COVID-19: 22 vehicles impounded at club houses in Ibadan

Ibadan, March 29, 2020 (NAN) Oyo State COVID-19 Security and Enforcement Sub-Committee has impounded 22 illegally parked vehicles at club houses and public places in Ibadan during its special night operations on Saturday.

A statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the state Ministry of Information, indicated that Mr Akin Fagbemi, the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA), said the operation was a pre-patrol to enforce the dusk till dawn curfew, which commences across the state on Sunday (today).

According to the statement, the enforcement team dispersed clusters of persons that formed crowd of more than 10 at club houses visited during the operation.

“They also gave sufficient information on the need for residents to comply with the state government’s directives on social distancing, regular washing of hands and other guidelines.

The club houses visited included: Platinum, Hexagon, Pleasure Summit, Cimola Hotel, Latitude, Mauve 21, Ventura and Shanty’s club, all in Ibadan.

“In readiness for full enforcement of dusk till dawn curfew with effect from Sunday, Fagbemi distributed protective tools such as hand gloves, portable sanitisers, nose masks and thermometers to the enforcement sub committee team and charged them to be professional in the exercise.

He also urged them to respect fundamental human rights in the course of the operation.

“The Oyo state COVID-19 Security and Enforcement subcommittee is made up of OYRTMA officers and other security agencies.

“The enforcement operation is aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID-19 among residents of the state, particularly through transport operators, night clubs and other public places,” the statement read.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyo state had recorded seven positive cases of COVID-19 as at Saturday night.

Gov.  Seyi Makinde on Saturday, imposed a curfew (7p.m to 6a.m) and suspension of interstate transportation into and out of the state with effect from Sunday night, March 29.

Makinde also gave a directive that no public place or gathering should harbour above 10 persons at a time.(NAN)

COVID-19 : Why I’m in self-isolation – Gov. Makinde

Ibadan, March 28, 2020 (NAN) Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says he is on self-isolation based on the advice by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to governors who attended the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

In a live tweet chat monitored in Ibadan on Saturday,  Makinde said that governors who attended the NEC meeting came in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

“We were all advised to self-isolate and go for test. I have been in self-isolation since then.” he tweeted.

On compliance with all directives aimed at  curbing the spread of the disease in the state; the governor said:  “We have an enforcement team which will ensure compliance.

“If there is a gathering of more than 10 people, for instance, they will be dispersed. If it is a nightclub, we seal it, until the ban is lifted.”

The governor said  that the state’s  testing capacity was limited, but it improved by setting up  two diagnostic centres in collaboration with the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

According go him, more people can be  be tested once NCDC certifies the facilities.

“Setting up testing centres will enable us to test more people which means that those showing symptoms can get tested regardless of their travel history,” he said.

On efforts toward public sensitisation; Makinde tweeted, “We are stepping up both enlightenment campaigns and enforcement measures.

“We have disease durveillance and notification ifficers in all the 33 LGAs and 35 LCDAs.

“Also,  local government caretaker chairpersons are involved in enlightenment campaigns and implementation of directives.

“Of course, if we have sustained community transmission, we will have to implement cluster lockdowns which are more effective than general lockdowns.”

He said that the order placed against social and religious gatherings was not targeted  at any religion or social group.

On the number of isolation centres in the state, the governor tweeted that the state  had a four-bed isolation unit in Ogbomoso, 10 at Jericho, four in the University of Ibadan and 100  at Olodo to be ready soon.

” Also, Tristate Hospital, Ibadan, has offered a 40-bed capacity unit including eight Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds with  ventilators,” he said.

Makinde added that additional four had been ordered for.

“The ICU beds in the state currently have ventilators. We are also collaborating with private hospitals.

“As I stated earlier, Tristate Hospital has offered its facilities which include ventilators. (NAN)

COVID-19 test for suspected case in Ibadan positive -Oyo govt

Ibadan, March 22, 2020 (NAN) The Coronavirus’ confirmation test for the suspected case at Bodija in Ibadan, was positive, Oyo State government said.

A statement from the state government on Sunday in Ibadan indicated that the result was released at about 5:35pm on Saturday.

It stated that Oyo State Public Health Officials were collaborating with the University College Hospital (UCH) and the Ibadan’s team on the case.

“A follow up on the Ekiti COVID-19 case, reveals that the deceased was picked up directly from Lagos Airport to a private apartment in Ona Ara Local Government Area of the state.

“The health authorities have contacted the family concerned and the community has been alerted for intensified contact tracing and self-isolation of identified close contacts.

“The information given that he stayed in some hotels in Ibadan has been found to be false. Another returnee from Texas, USA, has also been identified at Oluyole Local Government Area of state.

“She has been kept in self-isolation with close monitoring by the state epidemiological team.

“All recent returnees are again urged to identify themselves to ministry officials and self-isolate for 14 days,” it said.

The state government further disclosed that funds had been released for the activation of emergency operation centre at the ministry of health, for establishment of diagnostic centre for screening of Coronavirus and other related infectious diseases to be stationed at the UCH, Ibadan.

The funds would also be for equipping the newly designated Oyo State Infectious Disease Centre at Olodo in Ibadan, that has the capacity for over 100 cases. (NAN)

Oyo trains 500 youths for Tony Elumelu empowerment programme

Ibadan, March 20, 2020 (NAN) Oyo State Government on Friday commenced training of 500 youths on application drive that would enable them secure 5,000 dollar seed capital from Tony Elumelu Empowerment Programme (TEEP).

Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan at the training session, Mr Kazeem Bolarinwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths and Sports, said the trainees  were entrepreneurs in different professions.

He said the programme aimed to reduce youths unemployment and improve the economy of the state.

Bolarinwa said the training would give the applicants advantage of accessing the TEEP seed money ahead of others.

He added that the programme was designed to fund entrepreneurs and engage youths in various vocational occupations.

Mr Timi Olagunju, Co-Convener of the initiative in Oyo state,  disclosed that over 1,200 youths applied for the training but could only admit 500 youths due to the outbreak of Coronavirus disease.

He said that the training would be conducted among 50 youths per batch to avoid overcrowding.

Olagunju, however, said the remaining 700 applicants, who would not participate physically in the training, can access it through twitter handle, YouTube and other available channel to be provided.

He further said  the training would  provide opportunity for young entrepreneurs interested in going into professions such as Construction, Fashion Industry, Telecommunication, ICT among others

The Chief Trainer of the Project, Miss Fiyinfolu Olajola, said the foundation secured over 1,000 job opportunities for youths in the state and hoped to achieve more at the end of the training. (NAN)

Postponement of sports festival will benefit all stakeholders– Oyo Commissioner

Ibadan, March 17, 2020 (NAN) Mr Seun Fakorede, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, says the postponement of the 20th National Sports Festival earlier scheduled for between March 22 and April 1 will benefit all stakeholders.

Fakorede stated this on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Ibadan.

He said the decision to postpone the festival by the host state, Edo, was rational and timely as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak globally.

The commissioner said the postponement would not diminish the morale and enthusiasm of athletes from the state, adding that the team would sustain the tempo of preparation.

He expressed optimism that the state’s athletes would excel at the competition whenever it held.

NAN reports that 232 athletes from Oyo State were billed to  participate in 29 sporting events during the festival.

COVID-19: NOA begins sensitisation in Ibadan major markets

Ibadan, March 14, 2020 (NAN) Mrs Dolapo Dosunmu, the Oyo State Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), on Saturday, led other members of staff of the agency to sensitise traders in some major markets in Ibadan on the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation took the NOA officials to Oke Padre, Ogunpa, Agbeni and Old Gbagi markets.
NAN also reports that the officials created awareness and gave all the necessary information to the market men and women on preventive measures against Coronavirus.
Dosunmu said that the sensitisation had become necessary owing to the recorded case of the virus in Nigeria on Feb. 27.
“This sensitisation is part of measures being adopted by the Federal Government to stop the spread of the disease in the country.
“We are educating the traders to take precautionary measures, such as washing of hands with soap and use of hand sanitisers always, as money exchanges hands every day.
“They should try to avoid clustering of people and keep a distance of two to three meters away from one another and avoid close contact with people sneezing, coughing or having running nose.
“We also told them that anyone with strange fever that fails to respond to treatment should quickly visit the hospital for further diagnosis.
“We let the general public know that Coronavirus disease has spread to many countries across the world and that the present situation requires the responsibility of everyone in order to nip the disease in the bud.” the NOA boss stated.
Dosunmu further called on religious leaders to assist in spreading the information to their congregations in the churches, mosques and other worship centres and religious gatherings.
NAN reports that the NOA officials educated the market men and women in English Language and the three major languages: Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, thus giving them the opportunity to have access to information on Coronavirus. (NAN)

Oyo govt. to review Oyo, Ogbomoso GRA land allocation

Ibadan, March 9, 2020 (NAN) The Oyo State Government is set to review the allocation of land at the Government Reserved Area (GRA) at Akitipiti in Oyo town and Oke Anu in Ogbomoso in fulfilment of its promise to decongest Ibadan, the state capital.

The State Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr Abiodun Abdu-Raheem, disclosed this on Monday at the end of duty tour to the affected GRAs in the two towns.

He stated that the lands at Oyo and Ogbomosho GRAs had been allocated for over 10 years without any development carried out on them.

The commissioner lamented that the plots of land, which could serve as sources of revenue for the state government, were being left to waste away.

He called on the land owners to be ready to develop their plots of lands or have them revoked.

“We were at Oyo and Ogbomoso to see the state of things at our GRAs and what I saw was very disheartening. A lot of people are in need of lands and these can even help in boosting the revenue drive of the government.

“Most of the people who acquired the lands did not even bother to develop them. We will go through each of their files and revoke where necessary.

“The Seyi Makinde-led administration wants to decongest Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, and in order to achieve this, lands in neighbouring towns need to be developed.

“I need to further assure anyone that is interested in acquiring lands at Oyo and Ogbomoso GRAs to visit the ministry for guidelines while only those who mean business will get it,” the commissioner said.(NAN)

Octogenarian with 3 mentally-unstable children seeks Oyo govt’s assistance

Ibadan, Feb. 16, 2020 (NAN) An Octogenarian, Madam Susan Adegoke, has appealed to the Oyo State government to extend medical attention to her mentally-challenged children.
A statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the state Ministry of Information quoted Adegoke as saying that three out of her seven children were mentally sick until one of them, Oluwole, got help from the state government.
The aged woman made the appeal on Friday when Mrs Faosat Sanni, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, on behalf of the state government, reunited Oluwole with his family.
Narrating her story with tears, the 80-year-old said that she gave birth to seven children and that three of them, who are males, had mental challenges.
She said that life had not been fair to her, as she laboured and used all her investments and resources to take care of the sick children in order to bring them out of their predicaments, but to no avail.
“My first, second and sixth children are mentally unstable. I had sought for help, both spiritually and medically, with lots of financial implications, but all efforts have still proved abortive.
“Oluwole, who is 50 years of age, was a panel beater’s apprentice before he had mental challenges.
“I have been neglected by their father’s family. Since the incident happened to my children, it has been between myself and God. Even at my old age, I still manage to do menial jobs to take care of them,” she said.
The octogenarian thanked Gov. Seyi Makinde for his efforts and used the opportunity to seek the extension of the gesture to her other two children still in that condition.
The commissioner said that Oluwole Adegoke, who had suffered from mental illness for 20 years, was among the mentally-ill persons evacuated by the state government recently.
“Adegoke, who hails from Fiditi in Oyo state, lives at Alapa compound, Idikan in Ibadan; he had battled mental illness for 20 years before help came his way during our last raiding exercise.
“Based on the little information Oluwole gave us about himself, the ministry, together with the partnering NGO, traced his mother, Madam Susan Adegoke, who is over 80 years of age.
“On getting to where Oluwole claimed he lived at Idikan, we met a collapsed building where his two mentally-unstable elder brothers, Olusola and Abiodun, born of the same parents live. In fact, it was a pitiable sight,” she lamented.
Sanni, who described the case of Oluwole being reunited with his aged mother as pathetic, advised parents to take good care of their children and wards at early childhood.
She observed that many of those suffering mental illnesses were either products of broken homes or parental carelessness. (NAN)
