Isarun (Ondo State), April 1, 2020 (NAN) The Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, on Wednesday distributed food items to his constituents, to cushion effects of  the stay-at-home order given by the state government to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Oleyelogun, who represents Ifedore Constituency in the state House of Assembly, distributed rice, beans and salt to the constituents across the 10 wards, irrespective of their political affiliations.

“I am distributing these food items to the people of my constituency which consists of Isarun, Ilara-Mokin, Ipogun, Ijare, Araromi Omoladan, Ero, Ibuji and others.

He said that similar gesture had also been extended to all members of his church in Akure, adding that in time like this the less-privileged in the society must be assisted to improve their welfare.

The speaker also sensitised the people of his constituency against the deadly coronavirus pandemic and the precautionary measures to adhere to.

Oleyelogun, therefore, tasked well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations to come to the aid of the needy in the society and extend the hands of fellowship to them.

He enjoined the people to maintain social distancing, regular hand washing and use of hand sanitizers as precautionary measures put in place to fight the spread of the pandemic.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mr Muyiwa Adeleye and Mrs Victoria Adedayo, appreciated the speaker for the gesture, saying it would go a long way in cushioning the effects of the stay-at-home directive.

They said the palliative was timely, and thanked him for having them at heart in his welfare package for the society. (NAN)

Covid-19: Akure monarch suspends palace activities

Akure, March 24, 2020 (NAN) The Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, has suspended all palace activities as a measure to  contain the spread of coronavirus in Akure.

 

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Michael Adeyeye, the Chief Press Secretary to the monarch, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Akure.

 

The statement read: “The Deji of Akure kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi,  has observed with utmost interest, the rising wave of the coronavirus pandemic across the world.

 

“His Majesty wishes to appreciate the timely intervention of the Ondo State Governor at stemming the tide of a possible spread of the virus to Ondo State.

 

”Though, all the reported cases in Ondo State have all tested negative, the efforts of the governor in ensuring a disease-free Ondo State cannot be over emphasised.

 

“His Majesty is also fully aware of the efforts of the government through the taskforce headed by the Commissioner for Health.

 

”We enjoin all residents of Akure to comply with the directives of the Federal and State Governments on preventive measures, such as washing of hands, avoiding overcrowded gatherings among other measures.

 

“In strict adherence to the government directives, the palace has also taken temporary measures in the prevention of possible spread of Covid-19,”it stated.

 

The palace, therefore, announced a temporary suspension of all cases before it till further notice, adding that it was to avoid overcrowding and large gathering of people in the palace.

 

The statement quoting the monarch directed all heads of various markets ,’Iyalojas’, to as a matter of urgency, provide buckets and liquid soaps, hand sanitizers for washing of hands in their various markets.

 

“In addition, all senior and quarter chiefs should ensure adequate compliance with this directive in all the markets within their jurisdictions.

 

“The palace will continue to partner with the government and all relevant stakeholders in ensuring that all hands are on deck to deal with this epidemic,”the statement said.

 

The palace advised anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 to report to the nearest government health institutions.

 

It also  encouraged all residents not to panic, but to pray at this critical time, maintain good personal hygiene and observe all the measures being put in place by the state  ministry of health.

 

“His Majesty prays that this COVID-19 will be defeated in no distant time,”it said. (NAN)

Coronavirus: FUTA suspends academic activities

Akure, March 20,2020 (NAN) The authorities of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has directed that all academic and related activities  in 2019/2020 session involving students, be suspended with effect from Friday, March 20,  over spread of coronavirus in the country.

The directive is contained in a statement signed by the institution’s registrar, Mr Richard Arifalo, on Friday in Akure.

“Following incidence of Corona Virus infestation in parts of the country the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA, has directed that all academic activities and related matters involving students be suspended from Friday, March 20, 2020.

“Consequently all students, except international postgraduate students, are to proceed on mid-semester break and therefore should vacate all halls of residence by today , March 20, 2020 as fumigation of halls of residence will begin immediately,” the statement read.

According to the statement, students are strongly advised to observe all prescribed precautions and hygienic practices relating to the prevention against Coronavirus and Lassa fever during and after this period.

It also enjoined the students not to engage in any activity that could endanger their lives or put their studentship in abeyance during the course of the break.

It added that the date for resumption would be communicated to them through the extant university’s channels in due course.

The statement, however, asked members of staff of the school to continue with their normal official functions, urging them to maintain proper hygiene and other prescribed anti-infection practices including social distancing.(NAN)

Ondo 2020: APC Unity Group to present consensus candidate for primaries

Akure, Feb. 15, 2020 (NAN) Sen. Ajayi Boroffice, representing Ondo North Senatorial District, says the Unity Group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State will present a consensus governorship aspirant for the party’s primaries.

Boroffice, a staunch member of the group, gave the assurance during an empowerment programme for women in Ondo Central and South Senatorial Districts on Saturday in Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed Sept. 19 and Oct.10 for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, respectively.

The Unity Group of APC is a forum which emanated as a fallout of the last governorship primary that produced Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as the party’s flag-bearer in 2017.

“We in Unity Group of APC in Ondo State will have one person to vie for the primaries.

“It may be Chief Olusola Oke, Jimi Odimayo, Ife Oyedele, Olusegun Abraham, Bukola Adetula or anybody in the group since we have a common goal of presenting a credible candidate for the party in the coming election,’’ Boroffice said.

He, therefore, urged the women to remain resolute and support the party, saying that better days would soon come.

“Since past elections, women have been marginalised and denied the dividend of democracy.

“We have decided to empower them, though they are not from my senatorial district.

“If others do not remember you for your efforts in the party, I do remember your support,” Boroffice said.

NAN reports that four women from each local government area of Ondo Central and South Senatorial Districts received empowerment of N50,000 each.

Two women from each local government area of the districts were also given grinding machine each to boost their livelihoods.

Boroffice advised the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the cash and tools given to them.

“Please, do not sell these machines but make good use of them to better your lives and those who received cash should inject the money into their businesses,’’ he said.

He promised to monitor the beneficiaries in order to ensure the optimal use of the empowerment.

Also speaking, Chief Alli Olanusi, a former deputy governor in the state, asked the party supporters to remain hopeful, saying “all will soon laugh’’.

Appreciating the gesture on behalf of other beneficiaries, Mrs Faith Olugbenga, commended Boroffice for the empowerment. (NAN)
