Covid 19:Kano Govt opens online registration for volunteer health workers

Kano April 2 2020 (NAN) The Kano State Government has opened an online registration portal for volunteer medical and health workers to assist in the fight against the spread of coronavirus.
The Public Relations Officer in the state Ministry of Health, Mrs Hadiza Namadi, said this in Kano on Thursday in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Namadi said that the state government invited the volunteers for screening, which began on Wednesday, but the venue was overcrowded due to huge turn out.
“In an effort to ease the overcrowding of the designated venue of the screening, the state launched an online registration to ease the hardship.” the statement said.
The volunteer medical health professionals needed include doctors, community health extension workers, nurses and community health officers.
Other volunteers needed include laboratory technicians and scientists, pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians, environmental health officers as well as environmental health assistants.
The volunteers are expected to be residents of Kano.

22 suspected Coronavirus cases tested negative in Kano-Official

Kano, April 2, 2020 (NAN) Kano State Task Force Committee on COVID-19, says 22 of the 25 suspected Coronavirus cases have tested negative to the virus while three others are still pending.

Dr Ibrahim Tsanyawa, the state Commissioner for Health and a member of the committee, made the disclosure at a press conference on Thursday in Kano. 

Tsanyawa said the state government had adopted proactive measures to prevent spread of the pandemic in the state.
 
He listed some of the measures to include closure of schools, restriction of movements and closure of state boundary, encouraged stay-at-home order, promote practice of hand washing, environment and personal hygiene as well as social distancing.
The commissioner added that the state also expanded the scope of its Rapid Response Team, set up additional emergency help lines and isolation centres.
 
Tsanyawa said: “An endowment fund has been established to mobilise resources for the protection, control and prevention efforts as well as ease hardship caused by measures adopted against the spread of the virus”.
 
He urged the people for sustain support to the fight against the spread of the virus, which he said has not been recorded so far in the state.

COVID-19: UNICEF trains 13 facilitators in Kano on child protection

Kano, April 1, 2020 (NAN) The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has conducted a one-day training for 13 of its facilitators from the 44 Local Government Areas to protect children against coronavirus spread.

In his opening remarks at the training on Wednesday, the Chief of Kano Field Office, Mr Maulid Warfa, said the training was crucial to boost the capacity of the facilitators in order to achieve the set goals.

He tasked the facilitators on sending the right message in their respective areas of coverage, saying that children needed to be protected against coronavirus across the globe.

In a presentation, Dr Ogu Enamako, Communication for Development Specialist at the UNICEF Kano office, highlighted that the training was vital in view of the effect of the scourge on the world.

He explained that Kano could use the existing structures used for polio fight, to strategise for campaign against the COVID-19 spread and containment.

Enamako noted that the aim of the training was to provide a platform for convergence of ideas and information on COVID-19 prevention in Kano.

According to him, we aim to promote understanding of the COVID-19 and how to approach it.

“We also want do deepen participants’ understanding of social norms in the context of COVID-19 and how to address them,’’ he said.

In another presentation, the Manager, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project, Mr Rafiq Salih, tasked the facilitators on sending the right message.

He explained that it was best to send a precise message to the communities in order to get the desired effect.

He urged the facilitators to utilise the skills acquired from the training to communicate effectively at local levels where they operate.

A participant, Maryam Jallo, told NAN that she had taken a lot of communication skills from the training, which would improve her work in her local government of coverage. (NAN)

Dantata donates N300m to Kano State COVID-19 Support Fund

Kano March 30 2020 (NAN) Business mogul Alhaji Aminu Dantata has donated N300 million to the Kano State COVID-19 Support Fund.
 
A statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information Malam Muhammed Garba and member of the fund raising commitee, said Dantata announced the donation barely 24 hours after the inauguration of the committee.

The statement also said two businessesmen, Alhaji Abba Sumaila and Alhaji Abubakar Dalhatu, donated 500 sacks of spaghetti and N5 million respectively.“All commissioners and political office holders in the state, have also donated 50 percent of their salaries to the noble cause.

“The first donation of N28.5m from UBA was yesterday announced by Governor Ganduje at the inauguration ceremony, while Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has pledged to provide all needed facilities for the earmarked 600-bed Isolation Centre at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

“The committee, therefore, appeal to organizations and wealthy individuals within and outside the state, to donate generously towards the humanitarian gesture.

“Anyone willing to donate to the committee in cash should  pay/transfer to the following account: Kano State COVID-19 Support,  UBA, Account No: 1022751785.

“Donations in kind are also collected at a warehouse at number 94, Maganda Road and Kano State Government Printing Press, Emir’s Palace Road,” the statement said.

NAN reports that the 38-member committee was set up on Sunday by Kano state government to seek and collect donations from corporate organizations and individuals in cash or kind.
 
The committee was also given the mandate to distribute the generated fund to those in need, so as to relieve the harsh effect of the measures taken by government against the spread of Covid-19 in Kano state. (NAN)

COVID-19: Kano State relocates isolation centre

Kano March 27, 2020(NAN) Kano State Government has relocated its coronavirus isolation centre from ‘Yargaya to Dawakin -Kudu for effective management of the disease. 
Dr Ibrahim Tsanyawa, the state’s Commissioner for Health made this known on Friday at a news conference in Kano.
“Focus has been shifted from Yargaya isolation facility to the state of the art Disease Control and Diagonistic Centre at Kwanar Dawaki, where a lot facilities have been put in place.
 “This centre has all the required facilities to respond to any outbreak and it is comparable to any centre in the country,” he said.
 
Tsanyawa said that a dedication centre had also been set up to serve as quarantine centre for highly suspicious cases before graduation to the isolation centre.
He said that government will strive to provide palliative measures to ease hardship faced by residents due to the stay at home order.
He also assured that government will continue to provide timely information to the public and cautioned against fake news and rumours.(NAN)

Covid 19: FRSC warns drivers against overloading

Kano, March 25, 2020 (NAN) The Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has warned drivers against overloading vehicles with passengers, and promised to visit severe sanctions on anyone caught.
 Its commander, Mr Zubairu Mato, in a statement on Wednesday in Kano, pointed out that crowding vehicles was the fastest way of spreading the Coronavirus pandemic
 
The statement cautioned commuters against being squeezed into commercial vehicles, noting that the best way to protect themselves against the disease was to practice social distancing.
It called on drivers to comply with the policy of carrying only one person in front and not more than three in each row of the passenger seats.

“We equally advise travelers to endeavour to stay away from overloaded vehicles at all times, no matter the urgency of their trip,” the statement further said.

The command also advised passengers with symptoms of the virus to avoid boarding commercial vehicles and, instead, report for medical examination. (NAN)

Kano Govt. debunks discovery of suspected COVID-19 case

Kano, March 25, 2020 (NAN)  Kano State Government on Thursday debunks as misleading reports insinuating discovery of a suspected Coronavirus case on an airline passenger at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).
The state government expressed concern over a viral video on social media platforms insinuating that a passenger aboard a national carrier from Lagos to Kano developed symptoms of the virus.
It frowned at fake news peddled on social media platforms, saying such rumour was counter productive to the campaign against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hadiza Namadi, the Information Officer, Ministry of Health, in a statement on Wednesday in Kano, stressed that the threats posed by the Coronavirus pandemic was “no joke”.
 
Namadi quoted the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ibrahim Tsanyawa as saying: “We wish to state unequivocally that there was no passenger in the aircraft with suspected case of COVID-19”.
She said that upon information about the patient, the epidemiology and the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) team at the airport, conducted preliminary examination on the passenger.
“The team confirmed that the patient is a first time air traveller and developed phobia, which made him sick,” she said.
Namadi reiterated commitment of the ministry to adopt proactive preventing measures to protect citizens and support the airport health personnel to carry out secondary screening of all in and outbound passengers. (NAN)

Kano Govt. approves N74 m examination fees, others

Kano, March 24, 2020 (NAN) Kano State Government says it has approved the release of N74 million for payment of various examination fees for indigent students in the state.
Muhammad Garba, the Commissioner for Information, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Kano.
Garba disclosed that the amount were approved for release by the special State Executive Council  (SEC) meeting held at the Africa House, Government House, Kano.
He said that N38 million was approved for release to facilitate conduct of Interim Joint Matriculation Examination (IJMB) at the College of Education and Preliminary Studies as well as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Arts and Remedial Studies, respectively.

The commissioner explained that the council also approved over N15 million and another sum of N11 million for the 2020 National Examination Commission (NECO) and National Board for Technical Education Examination (NABTEB) examinations fees for qualified candidates of College of Science and Technical Schools Board.

Garba added that the council equally approved the release of over N10 million as compensation for demolished service station at Kano Line Terminus, belonging to Messrs Equatorial Petroleum Coastal and Process Limited, affected by the construction of State Road/Kofar Nassarawa Flyover. (NAN)

Kano Govt. orders workers to stay off offices, ban influx of buses

Kano, March 24, 2020 (NAN)  Kano State Government has ordered civil servants to stay off office for 14-days from Wednesday, March 24 to prevent spread of Coronavirus in the state.
 
Muhammad Garba, the Commissioner for Information, stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Kano.
Garba disclosed that the order was part of the resolution of a special State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at Africa House, Government House, Kano. 
 
He said that the measure was to ensure prevention and curtail spread of the Coronavirus pandemic through contact at work places.
 
Garba added that the state government had also banned influx of full capacity buses into the state from Wednesday March 25.
 
 He added that: “This is in consideration of the risk involved in the mode of operations of buses that involves stuffing of passengers and the unorderly sitting arrangements.

“The state government is working tirelessly to ensure the virus do not find its way to the state and if it does, government is prepared to control and manage it .

“The government, however, urged residents to ensure adherence to health instructions released by the Federal and State Ministries of Health on prevention measures against the disease as well as ensure personal hygiene”.

Kano March 24, 2020 (NAN)  The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended operations of cinemas, open theatres and viewing centres.
 
The Executive Secretary of the board, Alhaji Ismail Naabba, made this known on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN ) in Kano.
 
He said that the suspension was necessary  to check the Coronavirus pandemic.
 
“In compliance with the directive of the state government limiting social gatherings, we have suspended operations of cinemas and open air theatres where celebrities make performances,” he said.
 
He appealed to the operators of the places to  comply full for safety. (NAN)
