EU, UNICEF renovate 39 health facilities in Bauchi State-official

Gadau (Bauchi) Feb. 11, 2020 (NAN) European Union (EU) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have renovated 39 health facilities in various locations in Bauchi State.

The Chief of Field Office, UNICEF, Bauchi, Dr Bhanu Pathak disclosed this on Tuesday while handing over one of the facilities at Gadau town in Bauchi State.

Pathak explained that the facilities renovated were among the 162 facilities targeted for rehabilitation in the state before the end of 2021.

Pathak said UNICEF had also supported non governmental organisations working in the state with capacity buildings and other facilities.

He said that over 20,000 persons were expected to benefit from Gadau facility due to its proximity to the state-owned University in Gadau.

Pathak urged the staff posted to man the facility to start rendering services to the people.

Dr Rulwanu Mohammad, Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA), said that UNICEF was also providing drugs and equipment to 323 health facilities in the state.

Mohammad said UNICEF was spending N72 million annually on routine immunisation in the state.

He said that Nigeria State Health Investment Project (N-SHIP) in its efforts to boost health delivery had renovated 204 hospitals and primary health facilities in the state.

The chairman advised husbands against preventing their wives from attending health facilities.

He urged the men to ensure their wives benefitted from routine immunisation, family planning and other services rendered by the facilities.

He commended UNICEF and other organisations for the assistance rendered to the state. (NAN)

Wikki Tourists FC will make impact in this season’s NPFL, official says

Bauchi, Feb. 11, 2020 (NAN) The Bauchi State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Adamu Manu, on Tuesday expressed confidence that Wikki Tourists Football Club would make impact in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Manu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi that the club would still excel in spite of its poor performance in the league.

“I am very confident the club will spring surprises with the new and talented players, as well as the coaching crew, it has engaged.’’

He however appealed to football fans in the state to give the team a chance, adding “we should not write the team off because of the few matches it has lost’’.

The commissioner assured that the team would learn from the matches it has played so far, adding that the players would improve on their current performance.

He said his appointment and that of the club’s new Technical Adviser have come as a form of rescue for the Bauchi-based club.

“Let’s give the current coaching crew a chance to prove their mettle.

“We are liaising with some professionals to enable us forge ahead and we assure our fans that we are going to succeed,’’ Manu said.(NAN)

Bauchi to participate in Edo 2020 edition of NSF – Governor

Bauchi, Feb. 10, 2020 (NAN) Bauchi State Government said on Monday that it would be participating in the ‘Edo 2020’ edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF).

Gov. Bala Mohammed, stated this at the Government House, Bauchi, while receiving the ‘Unity Torch’ for the 20th edition of the sporting event.

Mohammed, represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr Ladan Salihu, stated that the present administration was committed towards repositioning the sports sector.

According to him, the astro turf (artificial grass) at the renovated Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium paved way for the return of the state-owned team, ‘Wikki Tourists FC’ to its home ground after spending two seasons away.

He assured that the state would send its contingent to Edo State, not only to participate in the fiesta, but to win medals.

Also speaking, Alhaji Abubakar Sulaiman, the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, promised that he would prevail on concerned sports authorities to ensure that the state contingent excel.

Suleiman assured that he and other officials would form part of the contingent to provide assistance to the state athletes.

The state Director of Sports, Alhaji Maikudi Maikasuwa, described the unity torch as symbol of peace, unity and solidarity among Nigerians, especially athletes and officials.

Maikasuwa commended the state government for its political will towards promoting sports in the state. (NAN)

Fire claims 5 lives, N801.2m property in Bauchi state

Bauchi, Jan. 13, 2020 (NAN)The Bauchi State Fire Service says five lives and property worth N801.2 million were lost to fire disasters in the state in 2019.

Alhaji Abubakar Bala, the Public Relations’ Officer of the service disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Bauchi.

Bala said that the service also saved 47 lives and property worth N1.68 billion during the period.

He said that the service received 289 distressed calls during the period and promptly responded to all of them.

“Most of the cases involved residential buildings, workshops, shops, hotels, petrol stations, vehicles and markets,” he said, and attributed the incidents to electrical faults, poor handling of electrical appliances and misuse of gas cookers.

Bala recalled that the service in 2018 saved 217 lives and property worth N1.03 billion while six lives and property worth N355.53 million were lost to various incidents during the period.

He called for the establishment of more fire fighting substations in Bauchi metropolis due to rising population.

“The three new fire fighting vehicles and two water tanks provided by the immediate past administration in the state for effective service delivery fall short of our needs.

“We are asking the present administration to provide us with more equipment and to employ more fire fighters to enable us excel,” he said. (NAN)
