Renewed attacks:Yobe police command calls for vigilance, information sharing on insurgents

Damaturu, March 7, 2020 (NAN)  Yobe Police Command on Saturday  advised people of the state to be extra-vigilant and volunteer information on suspicious movements in their communities.

In a statement through its spokesman, Dungus Abdulkarim, the command said the call became necessary following renewed attacks by Boko Haram insurgents on some parts of the state, the latest being in Dapchi last Wednesday.

It said Information should not only be provided, but in good time to enable security agents take pre-emptive measures.

The command said Mr Yahaya Abubakar, the State Commissioner of Police had visited Dapchi on Friday to identify with his men for their gallantry and symphathised with them over the death of seven others in the attack.

The commissioner commended the policemen for their gallantry in defending Dapchi community, assuring that additional logistic support would be provided.

It described the attack as “sad and unfortunate,” adding that the insurgents launched attack on the Police Divisional Headquarters in Dapchi.

“In the course of the gun fight, the insurgents suffered casualties losing 11 members but unfortunately, the police also recorded some casualties,” it said.

The command assured the people of their safety, urging them to also contribute their quota in curbing the threat by being vigilant. (NAN)

Corona Virus: Yobe Govt establishes isolation center

Damaturu, March 5, 2020 (NAN) The Yobe Government has established a 20-bed capacity isolation centre and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Specialist and Yobe Teaching Hospitals in Damaturu for any eventuality on Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dr Mohammed Isiaka, the state Epidemiologist, disclosed this on Thursday in Damaturu while fielding questions from newsmen.

He said that government had procured oxygen, thermometer and personal protective equipment to face possible challenge from the viral virus.

“We have a Rapid Response Team on ground and also training clinicians to build their capacities for management of any outbreak in the state,” Mohammed said.

Meanwhile, the state Primary Healthcare Management Board has embarked on sensitisation programme to enlighten the public on dangers and symptoms of COVID-19.

Alhaji Umar Kwanda, the Education Officer of the board, who led the sensitisation programme at Damaturu motor park, urged commercial drivers to monitor health conditions of their passengers and rush persons with symptoms of coronavirus to hospitals.

“You should encourage your passengers to wear mask and use handkerchiefs while coughing or sneezing.

“The motor parks and commercial vehicles are tools of spreading the virus because of passengers travelling from long distances into the state through commercial vehicles and motor parks,” he said.

Besides, the official advised the public to imbibe the culture of periodic washing of hands to improve hygiene. (NAN)

APC harvests new members from deregistered parties

Damaturu, March 2, 2020 (NAN) Hundreds of members of some political parties deregistered by the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) have indicated interest to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe.

Alhaji Umar Kukuri, the state Chairman of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Damatiru.

Kukuri said the Gov. Mai Mala Buni administration in the state had attracted many members of other political parties into the APC.

“The Buni administration has accomodated opinions of individual politicians, policies and programmes of most opposition parties thereby making the movement much easier.

“While some are still contemplating on where to go, most of the members have decided to go with the APC.

“Our luck in Yobe is that the Buni administration is implementing progressive policies and programmes aimed at improving the lives of our people and this is what we in other parties have been agitating,” he said.

The chairman highlighted the political sanity instituted by Buni as well as policies and projects being executed by the APC government.

Kukuri urged the political parties to accomodate new members, saying “you should give the new members a sense of belonging for democracy to thrive in Nigeria”. (NAN)
