COVID-19: Fayose tests negative as Olusola-Eleka seeks prayers for Nigeria

Ado Ekiti, April 2, 2020 (NAN) A former governor of Ekiti, Ayo Fayose, said on Thursday that he had undergone voluntary testing for the coronavirus and had turned out negative.

Fayose, in a statement issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said he was delighted to be adjudged free of the virus and asked more Nigerians to go for test while praying for victims.

” I took a Covid-19 test yesterday because of my percieved exposure in the last two weeks, I just got the result which is negative

” Notwithstanding, I will remain indoor like other Nigerians and I encourage more people to go for the test and remain at home in line with government directive,” Fayose was quoted as saying.

A former Deputy Governor in the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, also urged every Nigerian to pray against the pandemic.

“Prayer changes things. Ernest prayers will change our situation for the better.

” Genuine prayers can solve numerous challenges and deliver us from noisome pestilence outbreaks such as the deadly coronavirus disease.

“ The word of God holds that, if His people who are called by His name will humble themselves and pray fervently, He will hear from heaven and heal their land

” The Lord is still in the business of hearing prayers. He will hear ours, and in the fullness of time, will heal our land.” he said in a statement.

He urged Nigerian leaders to show commitment to the welfare of the people and continue to seek the intervention of God in the affairs of the nation.

Olusola-Eleka urged government take sincere and proactive steps that would ensure efficient and effective health management systems capable of handling and managing current challenges.

He also appealed to the people of Ekiti to avoid staying in overcrowded areas while obeying all directives to fight the pandemic. (NAN)

Ado Ekiti, March 30, 2020 (NAN) Sen. Biodun Olujimi, representing Ekiti South Senatorial District,  on Monday distributed palliative materials to cushion the effects of government’s directive aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Ekiti State Government on Sunday ordered closure of all businesses, declaring a dusk-to-dawn curfew to prevent the further spread of coronavirus in the state.

Olujimi, who distributed the materials to government health centres, motor parks, palaces and other strategic locations across Ekiti, said she would love to see the people complying with government’s directives.

“I want to ask our people to conform strictly to the dictates of government, adhere to proper hygiene; washing of hands every time and maintaining social distance.

“This is beyond political affiliation, it is about life. Hence, to maintain a disease-free environment, the order is necessary and mandatory for people to obey.

“This, to my mind, will help prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in Ekiti and protect our friends, neighbours, and vulnerable population. Please, stay at home,” she said.

NAN reports that items distributed include hand sanitisers, anti-bacterial soaps, anti-virus/bacteria soaked wipes, copies of educating handbills, amongst other relief materials. (NAN)

Two septuagenarians, 4 others to die by hanging in Ekiti

Ado Ekiti, March 24, 2020 (NAN) An Ekiti High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced two septuagenarians and four others to death by hanging for the murder of one Sola Adeniyi.
The six persons were: Oniyelu Olu, 63; Folorunso Oluwatoba, 65; Peter Ajayi, 73; Tijani Arowolo, 80 (who died during the pendency of the suit); Dolamu Olaide, 29; John Ojo, 77 and Lateef Arowolo, 45.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that death penalty was pronounced on the convicted persons by Justice Lekan Ogunmoye.
Ogunmoye held that the prosecution had successfully established a prima facie case of conspiracy, attempted murder and murder against the convicts.
According to charges, the offences run contrary to Sections 516 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Section 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16 and Section 316 of the Criminal Code Law, all Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The prosecutor, Oluwakemi Daniel, told the court that the offences were committed on or about Feb. 7, 2017 at Ilupeju Ekiti.
She said that the convicts conspired to murder one Sola Adeniyi, 27 and also attempted to murder a commercial motorcyclist, Ojo Olaoluwa, 22.
The prosecutor said that Olaoluwa gave evidence that when the second accused person (Folorunso Oluwatoba) stopped him on that fateful day he was about to mount the motorcycle, he noticed blood dropping from his bag.
“Olaoluwa asked Oluwatoba to open the bag because of police check point ahead but he told him that it was grass cutter that was inside the bag and that he could not open the bag.
“When it was perceived that the content might be incriminating, he took to his heels and shot Olaoluwa from the back,” she said.
To proof her case, the prosecutor called five witnesses and tendered some exhibits which included confessional statements made to the police by the accused persons.
Other exhibits were photographs of the severed body of the deceased, medical report from Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Dane gun, locally-made single barrel and one cartridge.
On conspiracy and attempted murder, all the accused persons were sentenced to five years imprisonment each, except the second accused person who was sentenced to 10 years.
All the accused persons spoke in their own defence through their lawyers, C. O. Omokhafe, S. A. Longe, Busuyi Ayorinde and E. K. Adetifa and they called no witness. (NAN)

COVID-19: Ekiti Chief Judge restricts court sittings to only urgent criminal matters

Ado Ekiti, March 21, 2020 (NAN) Ekiti Chief Judge (CJ), Justice Ayodeji Daramola has directed that only urgent criminal matters should be attended to, in all the High Courts in the state.

Tbis was contained in a  Public Service announcement signed by the CJ  in Ado Ekiti on Saturday.

He said the decision followed the directive by the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi on  Friday, for the closure of all Academic Institutions and public gatherings in the state.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Fayemi had encouraged all public and private services to work from home from Monday, March 23, while the inter and intra-state transportation were advised to avoid overloading of passengers.

The governor also said motorcyclists must carry only one passenger each to minimise close contact as much as possible and hand washing facilities must be available at all motor parks .

“Citizens are also  advised to wash their hands regularly and unnecessary travel in and out of Ekiti  is discouraged at this time,” the governor had  said.

The CJ noted that only fresh Criminal (overnight) cases would be attended to in all the Magistrate Courts henceforth until further notice.

He said in all cases,  only direct parties to the matters for hearing would be allowed into the court premises during the period of hearing. (NAN)

Ado-Ekiti, March 14, 2020 (NAN) The Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC), Ekiti State, has appointed Mr Alani Oduntan, as the new Administrative Secretary.

The new acting head, takes over from Dr Muslim Omoleke, who is said to have retired from active service.

He is also to function as the Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC) in the state, as done by the retiring Administrative Secretary, since there is currently, no substantive REC in the state.

Head of Voter Education and Publicity of the Commission in the state, Alhaji Taiwo Gbadegesin, confirmed the develoment to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Ado-Ekiti, on Saturday.

According to him, Oduntan, who is to act as the Administrative Secretary of the Commission, will serve as “the Head of all Electoral Operations of the Commission in the state.”

He said the new Administrative Secretary had since assumed duties, assuring the public that INEC in the state, would continue to diligently deliver on its constitutional responsibilities to the society. (NAN)
