Lockdown: Eatery operators decry low patronage in Kano

Kano, April 2,2020 (NAN) Some eatery operators in Kano metropolis have decried low patronage occasioned by the lockdown measures adopted to prevent spread of Coronavirus in the state.

A cross section of the food vendors, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interview on Thursday in Kano, said they were not recording sales since the lockdown in the past 10-days.

Mrs Shema’u Yar’gada, an eatery operator at Kofar Dan Agundi area of the metropolis, said that customers were not forthcoming since the state government directed civil servants and students to stay-at-home due to Coronavirus pandemic.

“Coronavirus pandemic is really affecting my business, the patronage is very low compared to before.

“I now sold less than 10 plates of food as against 50 plates before the lockdown.

“People are even scare to buy food now from us and students who patronise us are on holidays.

” I am even thinking of relocating to another place for my business to blossom and enable me remain in business,” Yar’gada said.

Another food vendor, Ada Ofiong, at New Road, Sabo Gari, said that she serves  food to offices and banks.

“I am still supplying meal to my customers, the trade is moving smoothly. I pray that the lockdown would soon be over so that it would not affect my business.

“Now, some workers are no longer reporting to work for the past one week, the trend affected my business,” she said.

Also, Zainab Yusuf, a fast food canteen keeper, at Bayero University Kano (BUK), who corroborated earlier opinion, said that she was not making good sales since closure of the school.

Yusuf recounted that she used to make good savings from the trade in view of the high number customers patronising her services.

“Now; I hardly sell due to the closure of the school, there are no students and workers to buy from my shop.

“During school session; I made about N5, 000 profit daily from the trade, sadly it dropped to less N2, 000 since the enforcement of the lockdown,” she said.

Yusuf, however, commended the government for proactive measures adopted to prevent spread of the virus. (NAN)

COVID-19: Kano courts suspend sittings

Kano, March 25, 2020 (NAN) Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Nura Sagir, has announced the suspension of all court sittings till April 13.

The Public Relations Officer, Kano State High Court, Mr Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Wednesday in Kano.

“This is in compliance with the instruction of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, to suspend all court sittings over the outbreak of Coronavirus across the country.

“The Chief Judge has directed all courts in the state to suspend sittings for initial period of 14 days pending further instructions except in matters that are urgent, essential or timely, accordingly,” Jibo-Ibrahim said.

He said the measures were taken to safeguard the health of members of the public, judges and lawyers as Court sittings entails close contact of persons in the Court rooms.

NAN reports that there was mass compliance to the order, as the Kano High Court at Miller Road, Chief Magistrates’ Court at Nomans Land and Zungeru Road were virtually deserted.(NAN)

Alleged misappropriation: Court fixes May 7 for judgment, Sanusi’s suit against PCACC

Kano, March 23,2020 (NAN) A Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Monday fixed May 7, to deliver judgment in the suit filed by the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, seeking for an order restraining the Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) from investigating him.

A suit filed by Sanusi, in an exparte motion seeking the court to stop the PCACC, its Chairman Muhyi Rimingado, Attorney-General of Kano State and Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, from investigating him.

The court had on March 6 restrained the PCACC from investigating Sanusi and ordered the maintenance of status quo pending the hearing of the matter.

The Respondents in the suit are: the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti Corruption Commission, Muhyi Rimingado, Attorney General of Kano State and the governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

When the case came up for hearing, counsel to the applicant, Barr Maliki Kuliya, filed a 14 paragraph counter affidavit dated and filed March 20, attached with four exhibit.

“The Kano Anti graft agency did not give Sanusi fair hearing, by giving him time and facility that requires to defend himself, so in pursuant to section 36 of fundamental human rights, we urge the court to grant all our prayers.

Counsel to the first and second respondents, Usman Fari, also filed a four paragraph counter affidavit to the originating motions dated March 12, supported by one exhibit and also a written address.

” PCACC is not a court of law but only an investigative body, we are just inviting him to the commission for investigation ”

Fari urged the court to to dismiss the applicant application.

Responding, Counsel to the third and fourth respondents, Aminu Bello, had earlier filed a six paragraph counter affidavit dated March 17, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit.

Bello also urged the court to dismiss the applicant application.

Justice Lewis Allogoa, adjourned the suit until May 7, for judgment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that PCACC is investigating Sanusi over alleged land racketeering at Hotoron Arewa and Bubbugaje, in Kano.

Others being investigated by the commission over the alleged racketeering include Sarki Ibrahim (Makaman Kano) and Shehu Dankadai (Sarkin Shanun Kano).(NAN)

Murder: Surgeon docked for alleged negligence

Kano, March 19, 2020 (NAN) A surgeon, Dr Ayinde A.A, on Thursday appeared before a Kano State High Court, for amputation of leg of a 50-year-old man, Lawal Ado,  allegedly causing to his death.

Dr Ayinde, who is Head of the Orthopedic Section, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano was standing trail on one count of culpable homicide not punishable with death.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Lamido Sorondinki, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 12, 2019, at his clinic, Wisdom Hospital in Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.

Sorondinki said the deceased was earlier admitted at Murtala Muhammad Special Hospital, Kano and later referred to the defendant’s private clinic for orthopaedic surgery.

He argued that the defendant conducted surgery amputating the right leg of the patient without proper clinical analysis to ascertain the level of diabetes and control it.

Sorondinki said: “Ayinde amputated the right leg of the 50-year-old man, Lawan Ado, negligently by causing his death”.

He said the offence contravened Section 222 (7) and punishable under Section 224 of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.

Sorondinki also told the court that he was served with notice of bail application filed by the defendant on March 16, and prayed for adjournment to enable him respond to the matter.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Dapo Ajagbe had earlier filed a bail application before the court on March 10, seeking admission of the defendant on bail.

The trial judge, Justice Usman Na’abba, ordered the defendant to continue on police bail, pending the determination of the bail application in view of the fact that the defendant is a doctor with the state government.

Na’abba, thereafter adjourned the case until March 23, for ruling on bail application. (NAN)

Responding, Counsel to the applicant, Nasiru Dangiri, SAN, prayed for an extension of time in order to respond to the motion filed by the respondent challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit.

Justice Lewis Allogoa, adjourned the suit until March 23, for hearing of the originating summons and substantive matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that PCACC investigating Sanusi over alleged land racketeering at Hotoron Arewa and Bubbugaje, in Kano.

Others being investigated by the commission over the alleged racketeering include Sarki Ibrahim (Makaman Kano) and Shehu Dankadai (Sarkin Shanun Kano).(NAN)

Court sentences 2 men to 3 months imprisonment each for stealing goat

Kano,March 17, 2020(NAN) A Kano Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday sentenced two men, Mamman Mamuda,43, and Abdulra’uf Ibrahim, 18, to three months imprisonment each  for stealing a goat worth N6,000.

The enior Magistrate, Hajiya Fauziyya Isa-SheShe,  sentenced  the defendants after they pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy and theft.

She, however, gave the convicts an option to pay a fine of N10, 000 each.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Muhammad Shehu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence in December 2015 in Kano.

Shehu said the defendants stole the goat at Kogo Village Kano and sold it to an unnamed man in Kwanar Danyole Market Kano, for N6,000.

He said that the offence contravened  the provisions of sections 97 and 288 of the penal code.(NAN)

Man bags 9-month imprisonment for sexually abusing boy, 15

Kano, March 17, 2020 (NAN) A Senior Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Kano on Tuesday, sentenced a 30-year-old man, Mamuda Hussaini, to nine months imprisonment for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy.

Senior Magistrate Hanif Sunusi sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to gross indecency.

Sunusi gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N100,000.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Khalifa Hashim, told the court that one Kabiru Ibrahim of Kundila Housing Estate Kano, reported the matter at Kwalli Police Division Kano, on Feb. 24.

He said that on the same date at about 7.30 a.m., the convict gave the complainant’s 15-year-old son lift on his way to school in his vehicle.

Hashim told the court that on the way the convict made indecent advances by massaging the victim’s body, including his private parts and gave him N500 and his phone number to call him later.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 285 of the Penal Code. (NAN)

Police in Kano arrest 338 suspected criminals

Kano, March 11,2020(NAN) The Kano State Police Command on Wednesday said it has arrested 338 suspected criminals in its bid to rid the state of all forms of crimes.

The Police Public Relations officer,(PPRO), DSP Abdullahi Haruna, made the disclosure while parading the suspects in Kano.

He said that the suspects were arrested, starting from Jan. 16, through the operations ‘Puff Adder’, robust community policing engagements, community problem solving approach, evidence based and intelligence-driven investigation.

“36 suspected armed robbers were arrested, while 12 kidnapping suspects and 205 thugs were arrested.

“Others are five house breaking suspects, three suspects giving false information to the police and six suspected drug dealers,” the PPRO said.

According to him,  operation ‘Puff Adder’ attached to special Anti-Robbery squad arrested one Sa’idu Aminu,30, and Usman Ya’u, 24, of Kano State for alleged criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, impersonation and car snatching.

On Feb.15, one Mubarak Abdulkadir,20, and Anas Abdulkadir, 24, all of Rijiyar Lemo Quarters Kano were arrested for alleged armed robbery and confessed to have attacked a security guards and carted away solar batteries and panels.

Haruna said on Feb.29, men of operation ‘Puff Adder’, while on intelligence-led patrol at Farawa Quarters, Kano, arrested three suspects and intercepted a truck with registration number KBK 798 XB allegedly offloading some suspected cannabis into a Golf 3 vehicle and a tricycle.

“Three bags, 111 parcel of dried leaves suspected to be Marijuana were recovered,” he said.

He also noted that, earlier on Feb.6, the command arrested one Nuhu Abdulsalam,38, of Adamawa State for allegedly being in possession of one Opel Motor Vehicle with registration number BWR 20 AT, blue in colour.

“86 cartons of Top Gun insecticide, 46 bags of powder milk and three set of gold jewelries were found in his possession,” Haruna said.

According to him, on Feb.28, one David Festus of Rangaza Quarters Kano, reported at Zango police station that on Feb.13, one Muhammad Sani and Suleiman Umar, now at large, allegedly conspired to defraud a company, DAG Industry Nigeria.

“The suspects purchase 15 unit of Tricycles valued at N9.7 million, and collected the company bank account allegedly under false pretence to transfer the said amount and later the suspects allegedly sent a fake alert after receiving 15 units of the tricycles on Feb.28,” he said.

Similarly he said on Feb.10, one Bunu Lawan,23, and Abubakar Musa,22, all of Borno State, allegedly specialising in duping people were arrested with fake bank alerts.

He noted that during raids of criminal hideout, 205 suspected thugs were arrested, 156 were charged to court while 49 are under investigation.

The PPRO said that 9 motor vehicles, four tricycles, four motorcycles, 23 mobile handsets ,three solar panels, 16 solar batteries, eight cartons of stolen fluorescent tubes were recovered.

“80 sets of women wrappers, eight belt,four sets of lace materials, five pieces of praying mats, one AK 47 rifle and one locally made AK 47 rifle with 9 rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

“Seven locally made guns,636 knives,87 machetes, 72 clubs, ‘gora’, four bags, 381 parcels and other large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Marijuana.

“17 bags of expired anti malaria Lonart DS tablets, 78 cartons of Analgin injections, one drum and four gallons of suck and die, 340 red tube solutions, five cartons of codeine syrupy and 60 pieces of fortwin injection were recovered,” Haruna said. (NAN)

Man docked over alleged N600,000 fraud

Kano, March 6, 2020 (NAN) A 30-year-old man, Yusuf Abdullahi, was, on Friday, brought before a Kano Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding one Musa Dalhatu of N600,000.
Abdullahi, who lives at Kura Local Government area of Kano, is standing trial on a four-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating, misappropriation and criminal intimidation.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Muhammad Shehu, informed the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in September 2019, at Kura Local Government area of Kano.
He said that the complainant, Musa Dalhatu, entrusted the defendant with the sum of N600,000 to help him buy rice but that he converted the money to his personal use.
The prosecutor said that whenever the complainant called the defendant to ask for his money, he would be threatening him.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 312, 322, 309 and 319 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Senior Magistrate, Hajiya Fauziyya Isa-Sheshe, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000, with two sureties in like sum.
Isa-Sheshe said that one of the sureties must be a ward head, while the second must be a civil servant of not less than grade level 8.
She, thereafter, adjourned the case till March 22, for further mention. (NAN)

Court sentences man to death by hanging for killing neighbour

Kano,March.6, 2020(NAN) A Kano High Court on Friday sentenced a 30-year-old man, Yakubu Dalha, to death by hanging for killing his neighbour, Zakariya’u Bala.

Dalha, who lives in Tsangaya Village, Albasu Local Government of Kano, was convicted for  culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code.

Delivering judgment, Justice Yusuf Mohammed, held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Mohammed held that the testimony given by the defence witnesses did not corroborate the evidence of the prosecution.

“I  therefore sentence Yakubu Dalha, to death by hanging  until he dies,” the judge held .

The prosecution counsel, Mr Abdullahi Bature, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Aug. 22, 2012, at about 10 p.m at Tsangaya Village.

He said that the convict hit his neighbour on the head and neck with a firewood while arguing over political issues.

Bature, presented seven witnesses to the court who all gave evidence against the convict

The Investigative Police Officer,attached to Albasu Police Division Kano, Sgt.Tijjani Sule, in his evidence told the court that he investigated the matter, adding that the defendant was arrested and a confessional statement was obtained from the convict.

A medical official, Dr Abdulkareem Tijjani, attached to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Emergency Unit, in his testimony told the court that the victim was already dead when he was brought to the hospital.

The convict, who dismissed the testimonies given against him, also presented four witnesses to discredit the charges filed against him.  (NAN)
