Coronavirus : Federal lawmaker donates 2 months’ salary to constituents

Akure, March 28, 2020 (NAN) A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Adefisoye, has promised to donate his salary for the months of March and April to his constituents.
Adefisoye, who represents Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency in the lower legislative chamber, gave the promise in a statement made available to newsmen by his Media Aide, Oluyemi Fasipe on Saturday in Akure.
He said that the donation was borne out of his quest to ensure the comfort of his constituents during the stay-at-home period, as directed by both federal and state governments, to prevent the spread Coronavirus.
He, however, said that the cash donation would be used to purchase foodstuffs and other essential items for the people of his constituency.
“The only way the donation can get to my constituents directly is to purchase food items with the money and distribute to them at their doorsteps.
“We can’t tell them to stay at home without making provision for what they will eat during the period,” he said.
The lawmaker added he had given instruction that the foodstuffs, which would include rice, semoviota, gari and vegetable oil, should be distributed to the people in earnest.
“We have earlier purchased hundreds of hand sanitisers for distribution to my people in Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency.
“We are going a step further to purchase hundreds of face masks and hand gloves for distribution to them as well.
“I have always been alive to my responsibilities and I’m even prepared to overreach myself at this time of global pandemic to meet the basic needs of my constituents,” he said.
Adefisoye also assured his constituents that he would always stay alive to his promise of quality representation to them.
According to him, no resource and effort will be spared to impact the lives of the people of his constituency. (NAN)

IWD: Female politicians train secondary school children on women’s right, social justice

Akure, March 9, 2020 (NAN) The Association of Female Politicians (AFP) in Ondo State, on Monday, trained secondary school students on gender equality, realisation of women’s rights and social justice.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, organised to commemorate the 2020 International Women’s Day celebration, took place at the Akure city hall.
The event has as its theme: “I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Right and Social Justice.”
The President of the association, Hon. Janet Adeyemi, said that they were invariably training future women on generational struggle and educating them on things they needed to carry into the future.
Adeyemi, who said that in the next 10 years, most of the current students would become women, added that it was, therefore, important for them to know how much they had absorbed and how much they knew about gender rights and equality.
The former member of House of Representatives, said with consistent advocacy, the rate of women’s participation in politics had been increasing.
“Ladies should be able to hold themselves high and not see themselves as sex symbols; they don’t have to use sex to drive anything, either to get job or determine who to marry.
“When you know your right and build up on yourself, you will have self- confidence and God will help you to become whatever you want to become,” she said.
A former Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state, Hon. Olawumi Olatunji, in her welcome address, said that the platform was important for the girl-child to know that they were not limited by their gender.
Olatunji said it was important to put the young girls through in areas where they had miscalculated or failed in the past.
“There must be equality in all ramifications; we talk about social, cultural and political issues. We want women to wake up to understand that they have something to offer the society.
“When we talk about politics, we have a very little number of women in politics in a way.
“This programme is an awakening: to let women know their rights; we want to instill boldness; they must know the quality they possess as a woman; we are not limited to the male counterpart,” she said.
A legal practitioner, Mrs Jumoke Anifowose, said that the programme was on point and would allow the participants to see enough women role models whom they could emulate and tow their paths to greatness.
Anifowose praised the organisers of the programme for ‘catching them young’ and to let them know they too could be successful like their male counterpart.
Also, the Deputy Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs Wunmi Olumuyiwa, said that the programme was apt to the lives of the female students.
One of the participants and student of Akure Academy, Miss Jaiyeola Fayemi, said that she had learnt a lot and thanked the organisers for what she called ‘an eye-opening programme’. (NAN)

We’ve spent N13b on education in Ondo – Akeredolu

Akure, Feb. 20, 2020 (NAN) Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State says that his administration has spent over N13 billion on the rehabilitation and construction of schools across the 18 local government areas of the state.
He made the disclosure while speaking at the fund raising programme of Command Day Secondary School, Owena Cantonment, Akure on Tuesday.
Akeredolu, who was represented by his Deputy, Agboola Ajayi, said that conducive learning environment was key to better assimilation, thereby improving quality of education.
The governor promised to conduct a survey on how to best help the dilapidated structure of the school, among many other things it had requested for.
The governor apologised to the students for learning in an unclean and not-well-equipped environment, urging them to let it spur them into greatness.
He also urged all the stakeholders to join hands together and give the school a more befitting look, promising to do something tangible to assist the school.
The Brigade Commander of 32 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Zakari Abubakar, said education was important to the development of any nation.
Abubakar, who was represented by Lt.-Col. David Obot urged philanthropists to contribute to the nation’s development as a way of reducing crime.
The Commandant of the school, Major Francis Adesina, said that he would do everything within his power to give the students conducive environment to thrive.
The Founder of Prayer Centre Church of God, Prophet Samson Oluwamodede, who donated generously to the school, lauded the event, calling on well-meaning individuals in the society to help contribute to the development of education. (NAN)
