By Mabel Yakubu
Kaduna, March 19, 2020 (NAN) A Kaduna Upper Sharia Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 23-year-old carpenter, Abdul-Lateef Umar, to two months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Umar, a resident of Abakpa in Kaduna, was arraigned on a three-count charge of breach of trust, mischief and cheating, to which he, however, pleaded guilty.
The Judge, Umar Mustapha, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.
Mustapha also ordered him to pay the sum of N470,000 to the nominal complainant, as compensation.
He warned him to desist from committing crimes, saying that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Abubakar Shehu, had told the court that one Hassan Ali, of Ibadan-Taiwo Road, Kaduna, reported the matter at the Sabon Gari police station on March 9.
Shehu said that sometimes in June 2019, the complainant’s sister gave the convict the sum of N470,000 to make two sets of cushion, six pieces of dinning table and a television stand for her.
The prosecutor said that the convict, after collecting the money, refused to deliver the items and all efforts to recover the money from him proved abortive.
According to him, the offence is punishable under Sections 297, 307 and 313 of the Kaduna State Penal Code. (NAN)
